The College of Liberal Arts’ Community and Civic Engagement Initiative invites you to the 2013 Global Citizenship Project Retreat

Wednesday, April 17, 2013 Sylacauga, Alabama Open to all CLA faculty and students

EXPERIENCE ITALIAN ART AND CULTURE IN ALABAMA! For the past five years, Sylacauga, Alabama has hosted an annual Magic of Festival celebrating the rich heritage of marble in the community by hosting an Italian sculptor for 2 weeks to mentor international and national visiting artists from all over the country. This year’s Global Citizenship Project Retreat will be a day- long excursion to Sylacauga to explore first-hand this unique experience right here in Alabama.

The quarries in Sylacauga date back to the 1830s, but the area drew increased interest through Giuseppe Moretti’s artistic use in the early twentieth century. Alabama marble was used in the Washington Monu- ment, Lincoln Memorial, the U.S. Supreme Court Building, and other structures in Washington, D.C. and other cities nationwide. Giuseppe Moretti was an internationally recognized sculptor and is best known in Alabama for the cast iron of Vulcan atop Red Mountain in Birmingham. He played a vital role in the appreciation and develop- ment of the marble resources in Sylacauga. He was an artist and businessman who created the first carving out of Alabama marble, The Head of Christ. Alabama Marble is considered comparable in quality to ’s marble. Moretti had a studio at the quarry in Sylacauga, worked and traveled through Alabama, took Alabama native as his assistant and apprentice, and sparked the Italian flavor in the region.
