Samuel J. Lane, 32° , Venerable Master, Cumberland Lodge of Perfection

y the time you read this edition of the Perfect Elu, the Lodge of Perfection will have “gone dark”. B It has been a very busy and successful year thus far. This is a time for the Brethren to take a deep breath, relax, reflect, and enjoy the summer. At least for some of us-I can assure you that your Officers of the Lodge of Perfection will continue to meet into the late evening hours at Brother Jerry and Lady Mitzie’s house to discuss the remainder of the year and talk a little smack. Some of you at this point will probably say “ok . . . thanks Sam great article see you in September”. However, I have 500 words I must fill so I encourage you to read on. The question I pose for your consideration as you sit around the pool this summer is this; what, in the Masonic sense, is darkness”? said in his Revised Encyclopedia of (1929) page 262 about "Darkness": "Darkness has, in all the systems of initiation, been deemed a symbol of ignorance, and so opposed to light, which is the symbol of knowledge. Hence the rule, that the eye should not see until the heart has conceived the true nature of those beauties which constitute the mysteries of the Order.” For us (Masons) “darkness is more than mere “ignorance” it is a state of mind which prepares us to receive light by Divine command of the Supreme Architect. When a lodge goes dark it is a symbol of pre-birth, and of ignorance before the reception of knowledge. In Freemasonry, the darkness which envelops the mind of the uninitiated being removed by the bright effulgence of Masonic light, Freemasons are appropriately called the "sons of light." So as you can see going dark is not the absence of work but the preparation for work yet to come. While there may be no rest for the wicked a son of light rejoices in his never ending work of enlightenment for the glory of God and his Rite. How does one prepare for the work of enlightenment? First and foremost enjoy your summer, spend time with your families, brothers, and friends; in your spare time, (if there is such a thing), learn as much as you can about the Supreme Architect of the Universe, Freemasonry, and the Scottish Rite; volunteer in your community, neighborhoods, or at one of our summer Masonic events; spread the light of freemasonry wherever you go. I guess what I am saying is let’s be who we say we are. I don’t mean this to be a sermon nor a scolding because I am very proud to be a brother and a member of our Scottish Rite, and to be associated with such fine enlightened men of dignity and character, but we all fall short of the glory of God. Let us use our time wisely, yes to enjoy ourselves and our loved ones but also in preparation for our work yet to come. Have a blessed summer my brothers.

Fraternally yours,

Samuel J. Lane, Venerable Master

Valley Leadership is Focused on Membership Growth and Achievement with VMAP

enerable Master Sam Lane and Asst. Personal Representative Robin Summerfield attended the Spring 2018

V Scottish Rite Workshop in Seattle. The Workshop offered an opportunity to exchange ideas with Scottish Rite leaders and brethren from across the country, including Sovereign Grand Commander Ronald A. Seale (pictured center below). The theme of this year’s workshops was “Supply Your Valley with Tools That Work.” Bros. Lane and Summerfield returned from the workshop armed with a number of new strategies aimed at enhancing the membership experience in our Valley and expanding our membership recruitment and retention efforts as part of our Valley Membership Achievement Program (VMAP). The VMAP committee and Executive Staff have already begun incorporating some of these strategies into the 2018 VMAP and will be developing additional initiatives for 2019. During the Workshop, the Valley of Cumberland received recognition for the success of our A-Thing-A-Ma-Jig Variety Show fundraiser and Friend-To-Friend Night programs. Following the Workshop, Bro. Summerfield was selected as a Grand Commander’s Fellow for the 2018-2019 Biennium and will be attending the Fellows Conference at the Supreme Council in Washington, DC this August. This Fellows program brings together a cohort of approximately sixty Scottish Rite members from across the Southern Jurisdiction to discuss what they learned at the regional Scottish Rite Workshops, share strategies that have been successful in their Valleys, and identify VMAP Best Practices to help Valleys grow their membership while better serving the Southern Jurisdiction.

Ill. Jamey S. Hill, 33° Personal Representative’s Message asonry is multifaceted. It offers not only fraternity, but also history, ritual, symbolism, and philosophy M for study. Past Grand Master Bennie Owens knew this and wrote of it often in his various capacities over the years. Bennie was a fun loving man who lived life to the fullest and will live in our hearts for many, many years to come. For those of us who knew him even for a short time “Bennie will be sadly missed.” Grand Master Bennie could have told you……..There are three types of Masons among us. The Reactionary Mason who actually believes he is always right, is inflexible, and will not listen to another point of view. The Conventional Mason, he has no particular conviction, no vision of the future and is perfectly satisfied with “doing it the way we’ve always done it.” Third is the Dynamic and Creative Mason. He sees that we are adrift on still water and he seeks ways to make the waters flow. He looks for new directions and ways to expand and grow each member. He will reach out to the uninitiated public, as is essential for our fraternity to prosper and endure. Those are not my words but PGM Hope Harrison’s and they are still relevant today. Masonic jurisdictions that work together at the leadership level to promote combined Masonic events, sharing common tenancy, do better financially and fraternally than jurisdictions that insist on going it alone. Cumberland recently had two such events... Combined Ladies Night in May, with a sold out crowd of 192 attendees. Many thanks to Antietam Lodge, Hagerstown, Potomac, Queen City, East Gate, Ali Ghan, , Tall Cedars and the members of the Scottish Rite who could see the time had come. Ladies Night was Awesome! And everyone’s favorite meeting, the last shindig of Spring - “Combined Masonic Strawberry Night” was also well attended (97) with some great entertainment featuring Bill Gray on vocals and Donnie Carmen on guitar. It costs us all less money, we had more time with family, because we did not have four strawberry nights to attend and we enjoyed each other’s company! Why didn’t we do that before? Thanks Worshipful Masters Sam, Rob, Andrew, and Terry! We have Dynamic and Creative Freemasons as officers of the Scottish Rite of Cumberland. I would ask that you open your minds to their suggestions. Let us do something, Let us do something different, and, watch us do something now! Salvae Frater, Ill. Jamey S. Hill, SGIG Personal Representative

DeMolay Happenings—Ill. Charles J. Hout, 33º he International Order of DeMolay will celebrate a century of service to young men in March 2019. T DeMolay is an organization dedicated to preparing young men to lead successful, happy, and productive lives. Basing its approach on timeless principles and practical, hands-on experience, DeMolay opens doors for young men aged 12 to 21 by developing the civic awareness, personal responsibility and leadership skills so vitally needed in society today. DeMolay combines this serious mission with a fun approach that builds important bonds of friendship among members in more than 1,000 chapters worldwide. The order was founded in 1919 by Freemason Frank S. Land and was closely modeled after Freemasonry. With the sponsorship of a , the chapter normally meets in a lodge room. DeMolay is considered to be part of the Masonic Family, along with other youth groups such as Job’s Daughters and the Rainbow Girls. Like the Rainbow Girls, a young man does not need to have a family tie or sponsor in a Masonic organization to join DeMolay. DeMolay has seven Cardinal Virtues, which are the sole structure of what its members follow. They are: Filial Love (love between a parent and child), Reverence for Sacred Things, Courtesy, Comradeship, Fidelity, Cleanness, and Patriotism. The Cumberland Scottish Rite has sponsored the Cumberland Chapter of DeMolay since June 28, 1922, when the first class of the Cumberland Chapter of DeMolay was conducted with 112 young men receiving the initiatory degrees under the sponsorship of Meredith Lodge No. 3 Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, which would eventually become the Cumberland Consistory. By 1926, membership in the Cumberland DeMolay would reach 211 active members under the age of 21. Much like our Masonic fraternity, membership in DeMolay has declined dramatically as a result of declining participation in our nation’s civic life over the past half century. As we seek to raise awareness of the value of Masonry to good men in our communities, we should also encourage young men to take advantage of the positive mentorship and leadership development opportunities provided by DeMolay. If you have a son or grandson, I encourage you to sit down and talk with him about what DeMolay has to offer. The Cumberland Chapter of DeMolay No. 21009 holds meetings on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month at 7:30 PM at the Masonic Temple in Cumberland. The lifetime membership fee is $35. The petition for membership included on page 12 of this edition of the Perfect Elu can be returned to the Cumberland Masonic Temple, 15 Greene Street, Cumberland, MD 21502. The Cumberland Chapter is currently planning a number of activities during the summer to provide interested young men information about membership. If you know a young man between the age of 12 and 21, or if you have questions about DeMolay, contact David Gornall at [email protected]. The Perfect Elu July 2018 Page 5

From Your Secretary—Ill. Jerome F. Robinette, 33º

ur Scottish Rite is definitely in a transition period. Many things are happening and I am O having a hard time trying to evaluate if the change is something new or has it been creeping up on us and we did not see it coming. We all can remember when we had large convocations and the number of new members for the class was not taken into consideration, if we had a big class or a small class, there was always a room full of members in attendance and everyone had a wonderful day of fellowship and the new members enjoyed the good turnout to support their advancement in Masonry. We all say “they were the good ole days”, and indeed they were. What is different now???? When we now have a new class scheduled, whether large or small, there are no brethren on the sidelines showing their support for the new member, not even his “topline signer”, the brother who asked him to join our fine fraternity. This has not just happened overnight, but this lack of support has been getting more obvious each year. My brethren, as the great decline in membership is being noticed by all members, we have to make some drastic changes in support and begin to attend not only the new class sessions, but make a severe attempt to attend MORE, IF NOT ALL OF YOUR SCOTTISH RITE GATHERINGS and show that you really enjoy what you have found in Scottish Rite….. the fellowship and the occasional handshake of your fellow Brother. Look over all of the good things that are currently happening in YOUR SCOTTISH RITE (in this publication), and make them become a part of your new Masonic endeavors. Fraternally yours, Jerome F. Robinette, 33°, General Secretary

A Brief History of the High Degrees By Hon. James M. Snider, 32° KCCH, Orator, Cumberland Lodge of Perfection he origins and history of the Higher Degrees of Freemasonry are as much a puzzle as its origin. T It was in the 1720's, shortly after the founding of the first premier Grand Lodge of England that the Masonic ritual of initiation was clarified into a system based on three degrees. In the early days of Freemasonry there had only been two degrees and since there were no regulations about the structure of Freemasonry in the early 18th century, Lodges practiced Degrees and rituals that were found to be attractive to the members. Once a third degree was added, it was shortly followed by the Mark and Royal Arch Degrees - the first true higher degrees in Freemasonry. Over the years there seemed to be two groups of Higher Degrees - those that developed in Britain (the Mark and Royal Arch Degrees) and those that developed in France (the Scottish Rite Degrees). Even more degrees developed over time as various idioms such as the Chivalric Legends, the Classical Mysteries, the building of the Second Temple and various Biblical events. As many authors have eluded, there was quite a cross-fertilization between degrees, countries of origin and philosophy. The higher degrees today find their clearest expression in the United States where there are two paths open to a Master Mason: the York Rite or the Scottish Rite. The York Rite was a result of the British schools of thought. It is composed of three distinct bodies that provide separate degrees: the Royal Arch Mason, Royal and Select Masters and the Order of Knights Templar. The Scottish Rite dates to 1801. However, it had been introduced in the United States in 1761 by Etienne Morin. Today the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite is divided between two Supreme Councils for the Northern and Southern Jurisdictions located in Lexington Massachusetts and Washington D.C. respectively. Each jurisdiction confers twenty-nine degrees and an honorary 33 degree. The Northern Jurisdiction is composed of states located above the Mason Dixon Line and east of the Mississippi River including the State of Delaware. The remaining 35 states compose the Southern Jurisdiction. The York Rite and Scottish Rite each have their own special interpretation of the teachings of Freemasonry and each offers the Master Mason further opportunities for expanding Masonic knowledge. However, the highest degree in Freemasonry is that of a Master Mason!

Combined Masonic Strawberry Night In June, the Cumberland Scottish Rite partnered with Cumberland’s Blue Lodges on a very successful Combined Strawberry Night with nearly one hundred attendees from across the Masonic Family. At left, Jamey Hill and Jerry Robinette presented a check for $3,000 to Mary Ruddell and Cathy Growden of the Children’s League on behalf of the Scottish Rite Foundation. These funds were raised through A-Thing-A-Ma-Jig Variety Show in April. Bud Miles and Mike Kamauff (pictured at bottom left) and the entire Strawberry Night Committee organized a terrific event! One of the highlights of Strawberry Night is always the selection of the Scottish Rite Teams for the annual Children’s League Golf Tournament. Congratulations to the team members pictured below.
