PARISH OF PASTOCALLE

The Pastocalle parish is located in the Northwest in the province of Cotopaxi, It is located at 25 km from Latacunga, the Parish has 31 neighborhoods; I choose this parish because it has a lot of projects that try to development.

ECUANROSE

In the parish of Pastocalle we will visit Ecuanrose, because the contribution from flower growing to national economy is remarkable, as it also generates an economic movement in the rural parishes which are neighbors to the plantations which create thousands of jobs in feeding, transport, housing, provision of necessary supplies for agricultural production.

To rediscover ancestral land wisdom is a step away from us, every day. Black, fertile, alive land which can germinate. Land with which our ancestors communicated in a circular and perfect relationship. Such land where the most beautiful roses in the world grow.

On the other hand, to involve flower growing with tourism is positive because this means creation of direct employments, I can compares this activity with that

9

of wineyards in Chile, Argentina, and United States which have given a name to these countries.

I choose this place because approximately 400 people from the rural parishes of Latacunga´s canton works in this place, and it is one of the most important place that bring work at the people that live in the surroundings of this floriculture.

HATCHERY´S GUINEA PIGS

The hatchery of guinea pigs is a very important place because the guinea pig plays an important role in the folk culture of many Indigenous South American groups, especially as a food source, but also in folk medicine and in community religious ceremonies. The guinea pigs are a symbol in our country and it is an important product that the people eat in the high land region, for this reason is necessary that the foreign people know the real use that had this animal in our culture to learn to accept our culture.

This hatchery is very close to Ecuanrose and it is located 5 minutes from the center of Pastocalle. In this part we can find Pastocuy; it is a new project that tries to development the business between the community and the people. In this project there are approximately 10 families, they have their own hatchery where

10

there are 250 guinea pigs. They sell these guinea pigs at the community at the coast of 7 to 12 dollars but they do not prepare this animal like a dish.

The common guinea pig was first domesticated as early as 5000 BC for food by tribes in the Andean region of South America (present-day the southern part of

Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia); Since the 1960s, efforts have been made to increase consumption of the animal outside South America

PARISH OF TANICUCHÍ

The parish of Tanicuchí is situated 20 km to the Northwest of the city of

Latacunga in Cotopaxi province, in the central part of the Andean alley, between the Cordillera Central and Western, at an approximate altitude of 2.981 meters above sea level and has an area of 80 Km.

It is apted for knowing more about the customers and traditions in the rural parishes of Cotopaxi. Parish´s temple has been standing majestically during a century. It has enhanced the authentic nature of deeply Catholic people. It was declared like cultural patrimony of Ecuador. Basically in Tanicuchí tourism is not developed yet but in my opinion it has a lot of interesting things like the bulb fighting square, the main square, the cultural house and the main church.

11

Another interesting thing is the festivity in honor of Saint John Baptism; it is a cultural event lived and held by the family. In this festivity the main actor is the

“prioste” who had to work hard during the year, the prioste creates favorable conditions of reciprocity, through the redistribution of goods.

PARISH OF GUAYTACAMA

The parish of Guaytacama is located 12 Km north of Latacunga, it has an altitude of 2.906 meters above the sea level with 7.475 inhabitants; Inside the parish there are 13 neighborhoods, whose temperature fluctuates between 8 ° degrees in the morning and 18 ºdegrees at midday; It is considered as a high-risk zone before "the eruption of Cotopaxi volcano hypothesis".

Historically the parish of Guaytacama was elevated to the category of ecclesiastical parish on December 17th of 1829, according to the first inscription made in the book of baptisms resting in the Curia of Latacunga; the elevation of category of Civil Parish was on May 27th of 1861 with the creation of the Canton in Latacunga, in the Presidency of Gabriel García Moreno.

12

The parish of Latacunga in relation to tourism has:

 The sanctuary of Cuicuno "Lord of the tree"

 The recreational complex of Guaytacama "Family time race"

 Crafts: Mats and the blowholes in the neighborhoods of San Sebastian and

Pilacoto.

 Rates of totora.

 The jargon and the elaboration of candles or wax in Cuicuno.

THE SANTUARY OF CUICUNO

It is located 13 km from the center of Guaytacama. This sanctuary was built in the 16th century and it is a symbol in this parish. The people said that this tree is associated with the native ancestors the Mallqui.

The legend said that in this parish some year ago a group of people try to cut this tree but the tree began to bring blood, when the people saw this event they were scared but they discovered that the tree had the form of Jesus, in that moment began the faith in this tree and they decided to built a church in their honor. This is the origin of the devotion to the Lord of the tree of Cuicuno.

13

We can visit this church all the day but the hours of attention are from Thursday to

Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00. The priest live inside the church for this reason if you need visit this chuch you can talk whit them and they can help you easily.

TRAIN STATION OF GUAYTACAMA

In the middle of the 19th century, international trade, and particularly cacao exportation, became increasingly important to the Ecuadorian economy, necessitating a power shift from regional oligarchies to a central oligarchy capable of developing a nation-wide infrastructure. García Moreno, a traditional elite and landholder from

Ecuador's highlands, consolidated power by espousing a program favoring centralization and modernization. A central railroad connecting Guayaquil, the country's largest port, and Quito was the backbone of Moreno's plan. This stretch of the rail system became known as the "Southern Railway".

Political wrangling and deceit tainted the promise of the central railroad throughout its tumultuous history. The vicissitudes of the 36-year campaign to build the Southern

Railway began in earnest with the death of the man who conceived it. In August 1875, less than three years after the start of construction, political opponents assassinated

Moreno on the steps of the presidential palace. Over the next four decades, the Southern

Railway claimed many more lives, including Eloy Alfaro, the president credited with completing it. Rightist thugs sent by the opposition captured Alfaro and a group of his supporters, transported them to Quito on the train, and turned them over to an angry mob.

Aside from the deaths of two presidents, the arduous task of linking the coast with the

14

capital killed at least two thousand indigenous and Jamaican workers.

The completion of the Southern Railway did not accelerate the building of the rest of the railroad as many had hoped. In fact, the construction of the 373-kilometer Northern

Railway between Quito and San Lorenzo and the 110-kilometers of track from Sibambe to Cuenca, Ecuador's third largest city, took almost twice as long to build, 57 years, as the

464-kilometer line from Guayaquil to Quito. Continued political rancor and a mounting external debt were the principal causes of the construction delays. The Sibambe-Cuenca section was the last to be inaugurated in 1965.

The complete rail system survived less than 10 years. Throughout the 1970s the government discontinued most of the secondary lines because it lacked the funds necessary for repairing them. Flooding and mudslides regularly consumed many branches of the railroad and, eventually, even closed the main southern and northern lines. Trains ran the Guayaquil-Quito and Quito-San Lorenzo routes until 1998, when El Niño destroyed large sections of the tracks.

Nowadays the Quito to Cotopaxi excursion is a full day trip, offering fantastic scenery that culminates with the towering, perfectly symmetrical Cotopaxi volcano. It is an important attractive in our country for this reason we visited the train station; inside we can find a fabulous museum with some pictures about the history of the railway in

Ecuador; it is opened every day in week from 09:00 to 17:00.

15

HOSTERIA “EL CAPULÍ”

It is an excellent hostería in Pujilí, It has all the services that a tourist need to be good. If you need a very comfortable place in the surroundings of Cotopaxi you could visit this place located in the downtown in the city, these facilities have been rehabilitated in order to exhibit the gravel walls and brick finishing that enhances a singularly beautiful work of architecture.

This inn will cover the demand for lodging by groups of national and foreign tourists reaching Pujilí and the province, attracted by its geography and cultural commercial activities.

NOTE:

 In this day we do not have any unexpected, all the itinerary and activities

were development with success.

17

PARISH OF LA VICTORIA

It is located at s very old farm by the name of Mulinliví, 10 km west of

Latacunga and 5 Km. North of Pujilí. This site is widely visited due to the renowned handcrafts produced by true artist who render clay into many fancy and lively objects sprouting from their creativity and imagination.

Pottery has its origins in the neighborhood of El Tejar. Some years ago foreign members of the Andean Mission installed a ceramic factory in which some of the local artisans worked and learned the modern process of manufacturing ceramic objects. In time, when the mission members left, these artisans installed their own work-shops to produce predominantly toys and afterwards red roof tiles, abandoning in this fashion their original mainstay.

From then on, and thanks to the creativity and hard work of dexterous handcrafters, the scope of the production of ceramics broadened, as did the design and creativity, including: plants pots, glazed roof tiles, Moriscos

(balustrade components in the Moorish style) and floor tiles. Commercial outlets proliferated rapidly at other marketplaces and locations. During the twentieth century – the 70´s and 80´s – pottery reached national and international fame;

18

hence, upgrade techniques were required to improve production and attain excellent in quality.

In order to promote such pottery, more especially concerning objects made of ceramics and be able to set forth dissemination and commercialization policies, the traditional ceramics festivities were established during carnival. Original designs from the area are exhibited, and constitute an attraction to national and foreign tourists.

PARISH OF BELISARIO QUEVEDO

The parish of Belisario Quevedo is located 7 km at the north of Latacunga, it has 5.500 inhabitants whit a temperature between 9 degrees to 20 degrees in the hottest days.

The main tourist attraction is the hill called Putzalahua, which has an altitude of 3515 meters above the sea level. It has a mythological appreciation with countless legends. To attract tourism among the activities to be carried out is the

Putzalahua and in the surrounding area the government tries to development a botanical park.

19

CENTER OF ENTERTAINMENT OF SANTA ROSA

This center of entertainment is located at 15 minutes from the center of

Belisario Quevedo; it is a new project that the government tries to development whit the help of the community; inside this place we can find a water´s reservoir, it has approximately 13 million liters of water, it is connecting with the town with tunnels that provide of water at 60 families. Whit the community they want to rent bicycles and boats.

NOTES:

In this day we do not have any unexpected, all the itinerary and activities were development with success.

20
