organization established in 1989 in Algeria gives me a beneficial position to reach out the most important portion of the society which is youth. We play a crucial role in representing students dealing with educational, economic, social and cultural interests at a regional and national level. My Middle East and Partnership Initiative (MEPI) training in the was my lifetime experience, it is a must to say that it was a life time changing experience. Getting to know 91 students from the MENA region and spending more than a month with 14 of them from 14 different countries other than mine is the best thing that can happen to a student! We learnt a lot, we got experienced not only through lectures or theories but also through practice and workshops which is the best way of learning. We got involved in several organizations like ‘Leaders for Democracy’ and ‘save the bay’. I have never ever learned like I did during my stay in the United States. Days were passing, discussions were started, cultures were passed out, mutual understanding was shared, friendship was built, team building achieved and love rose! A great family was born. We had a range of academic workshops, briefings, discussions with leaders and different site visits. Each and every one of us developed a positive social change plan to implement in his home country. I should actually be able to effectively communicate my vision and inspire others in having a higher purpose for a better world. This experience made me a whole new better person!! Despite the fact that even before going I always knew who I am and who I am not what I could do and could not , But now the one thing which is even more important is that now, I will do it , I don't just know that I can do it. I will make the change because now, I can demonstrate the difference between management and leadership. Another inspiring opportunity which led me to my actual projects is representing Algeria in the Conference for a in Cairo, this experience was unique, and I knew more about how to tackle with the environmental issues with simple tools! And I will have a training as in Ecovillage Designer soon, which enables me to be the best candidate for such position.

Motivation: I'm a girl who always does the best she can to make her today better than her yesterday and her tomorrow better than her today. When it comes to new challenges, I always spread my wings and try whatever it takes to reach my goals as soon as I can. Without a doubt, I'm always excited about obtaining new experiences and carry the work I have begun for a sustainable community. I have always believed that the worst thing in anyone's development as a leader is not in doing things the wrong way but sadly in doing them for wrong reasons. I have the right reasons and I’m just developing the right way. Being a leader in AYICC will boost my commitment for a positive social change. Being part of this opportunity will give me the chance to meet people from the Northern Africa region and the world to share my projects' visions, goals and missions, share my different experiences, exchange ideas, get heard and lead our mother earth to get healed and strengthened. My ultimate goal is to empower our beautiful Africa as it is one village. I will be dedicating my time, efforts and money to make changes in my country and continent. Participating or having a word in the AYICC enables me to enrich my project’s plans of the Empowerment of the GEN Africa Network(the Global Ecovillage Network) for a sustainable community, be the foundations of the activities I have in mind that are mostly based on the environmental issues. I strongly believe that being part of the AYICC can be beneficial for the initiative since I’m a delegate, member of the National Union of Algerian Students, the vice president of a neighborhood organization, the leader of the new association project EWA (the Empowerment for Women in Algeria), the Network coordinator and the project founder of the Global Ecovillage Network in Algeria, and a volunteer in many associations like ‘Nass El Khir Guelma’. In addition to learn, I can share my vision of a good leader with others who like being more comfortable leading with no authority and having a priority to create a comprehensive atmosphere for the team members to exchange and share ideas, being at ease, reach concord and make a positive change. I believe in the power leadership has, to build a society of equal opportunities and affect a lasting positive change in the community. Getting a position in AYICC can greatly expand my circle of influence and allow me to reach out to a greater portion of the world, to alter to its development and positive change and why not inspire others to take a leap of faith and begin their own ventures. Furthermore, to be able to develop a network of long lasting mutually profitable relationships and partnerships based on trust, thus help me get closer to my goal of becoming a successful leader and a social entrepreneur and becoming a more efficient and influencing agent to advocate for positive social change in my community, my country and my beautiful continent. It can be an open door to have an outlook on the different societies especially youth and solving the toughest social

and environmental problems our communities are facing, making meaningful contributions to society and establishing a long lasting positive environmental change which can improve the reality we are living in.

Motivation: A practical strategy for youth participation in community and national sustainable development and climate change policy making, adaptation and risk reduction process in Africa.

As the youth we must be enthusiastic in what we do and about our country that is as young people we must start making decisions by taking actions that affect our country and the entire world community. In this respect as young people we must start making decisions and take actions that affect our communities. Youth should be involved in policy formulation in all critical areas this includes implementation and evaluation of national policy changes and global progress in particular youth should be granted an opportunity to meet with communities with initiatives that are meant to achieve a harmonious co existence of diverse generations.

A growing number of sophisticated projects led by young people in schools and universities and community organisation across the nation such initiatives needs to be supported by the authorities who should continuously encourage young people so that we continue to be involved as adults instead of conducting one –time single issue projects that limit the impact ad validity of ,young people today are becoming life long advocates with sophisticated understanding of divergent actions for social economical development.

To build nation needs strategic plan and or policy we should therefore take our government to task to ensure that under each policy area and objective strategies must be developed that are to be implemented over a practical period of time this mean that to achieve meaningful revolutions youth must be empowered through policies to participate in development projects.

This will help us to input our minds and ideas one good example is the support of clean energy projects for students in tertiary institutions to archive long term sustainable development goals by governments and other independent players.

Date of Birth: 12/3/1990 Gender: Male Organization: International Centre for Energy, Environment & Development/Nigeria Youth Climate Action Network Position in the organization: Information & Communications Technology Officer

POSITION INTERESTED IN : REGIONAL COORDINATOR FOR WEST AFRICA

Experience:

Over the years, I was part of a team that did a youth mobilization/advocacy programme on the National Climate change Commission Bill in Nigeria (NCCC). What we achieved was to influence the Law makers (in both house) to pass the NCCC Bill in to law. Presently we are working on a strategy to lobby the President to sign this Bill into law. This bill seeks to harmonize and champion Climate Change activities in Nigeria and prepare us on adaptive measures to combat the effects of Climate change. I belongs to a network of environmental journalist both writers/editors and this serves as an important forum for advocating for climate change issues. I also manage a number of websites including a resource site for policy makers, researchers and journalists that work on environmental issues. I belong to Networks of organizations that helps promote Climate change and sustainable development. Women and children are the most venerable in the aspect of climate change. I recently volunteered in Accra, Ghana for the "What About Me' (WAM) Campaign, the Goal of this initiative which promote the interest of children and the less privilege.

Motivation:

I am passionate about humanitarian work and unparallel enthusiasm for youth activities. I am a founding and active member of the Nigeria Youth Climate Action Network, a coalition of young Nigerians working on climate change in Nigeria. I created and managed the on-line communication channel for the group. I have written articles published in print newspapers and online on climate change. I played a critical role in our work on advocating for climate change issues and have facilitated the relationship with over 5 local television stations, 9 radio stations, 4 news-magazines and 6 newspapers. This has given me the opportunity to feature lived on-air in creating awareness and educating the listeners and viewers. I have also undertaken professional photography training in putting vision effects on our images. I hope to bring on board all my skills to move this great forum to forward.

goal is to promote environmental sustainability and management of natural resources. I have attended a few conferences and been challenged by youths from other regions especially Asia. I want to see a change in my country and the world at large. I have worked as an intern for an NGO in Somali on fodder crop as a source of food and pasture so as to adopt to climate change which is causing severe in Eastern Africa. I am an environment management student and would like to share and put into practice all the theory learned in school. I have come up with a competition amongst my classmates where we identify activities that are of economic benefits at the same time environmentally sustainable and address issues of climate change.

Motivation: I am a female, 3rd year student pursuing Bsc. Management of Agro-ecosystems and Environment University of Nairobi. I am a young, creative, energetic and aggressive girl with an innate passion for environment and hence my desire to develop a career in this area. I am a self-motivated and integral individual with an outgoing personality. Able to work on own initiative and as part of a team. Proven leadership skills involving: Managing, developing and motivating teams to achieve their objectives. First-class analytical, design and problem solving skills. Dedicated to maintaining high quality standards. I would like to take up this leadership because AYICC has not yet left footprints in many young people in East Africa. Example, in my campus, I and two of my friends are the only members of AYICC. Anyone else I have request to join is not interested because they haven't seen any benefits from AYICC. I am an innovative lady with a great education background on environment management and would like to share my education and experience with youths across Africa. I feel there is need for field practice of all conferences we attend. In most cases people are more interested in traveling from country to country instead of implementing what they learn from the conference. This is why I am desirous of being a leader for East Africa, because it is time we stop doing things right and start doing the right things, Those that benefit the youths and community and African countries in general. I am a leader who looks at the direction that the people want to follow and takes the first step to lead the crowd.

In addition to that, I learned the notion of volunteership which young people in Africa need to have to assist in achieving sustanable change in the society.

Working with the African Youth Initiative on Climate Change has enabled me to undertand more critically the issues of climate change negotiations in a more in-depth level.

Motivation: My intention in applying as an East African regional coordinator is driven by the fact that youth need to work together to address climate change in Africa. It is only through partnerships that success can be achieved. More often that not, this has been impeded by unfavourable policies making youth not to achieve their uttermsost goals. Their is need for rural youth to paly a part in climate change mitigation and adaptation since they are the most

4. CHIROUF SELMA (ALGERIA)

Date of Birth: 7/11/1986 Gender: Female Organization: Live Green Algeria (LGA) Position in the organization: Founder

POSITION INTERESTED IN : REGIONAL COORDINATOR FOR NORTH AFRICA

Experience: As a pioneer and an advocate for social change, I believe in the positive power of social entrepreneurship which is at the service of humanity, Being a member of the National Union of Algerian Students which is the largest student organization established in 1989 in Algeria gives me a beneficial position to reach out the most important portion of the society which is youth. We play a crucial role in representing students dealing with educational, economic, social and cultural interests at a regional and national level. My Middle East and Partnership Initiative (MEPI) training in the United States was my lifetime experience, it is a must to say that it was a life time changing experience. Another inspiring opportunity which led me to my actual projects is representing Algeria in the Ecovillage Conference for a sustainable community in Cairo, this experience was unique, and I knew more about how to tackle with the environmental issues with simple tools!

Participating or having a word in the AYICC enables me to enrich my project’s plans of the Empowerment of the GEN Africa Network(the Global Ecovillage Network) for a sustainable community, be the foundations of the activities I have in

African Youth Initiative on Climate Change

http://www.ayicc.net

mind that are mostly based on the environmental issues. It can be an open door to have an outlook on the different societies especially youth and solving the toughest social and environmental problems our communities are facing, making meaningful contributions to society and establishing a long lasting positive environmental change which can improve the reality we are living in.

Motivation: Climate change is an intergenerational, intercontinental and inter disciplinary agenda. AYICC is like wise a response to climate change which transcends across the continent, across generations and across discipline's. Leadership in AYICC will help me to share coordinate and develop climate change development agendas not only in the southern African Region but in the continent as a whole. As the UN has declared 2012 the international year of renewable energy climate change responses should be in accordance with the international priorities hence my leadership at AYICC will also have a thrust on the Actions on Climate change, sustainability and development of the green economy. Climate change solutions should be married to every day challenges hence Leadership at AYICC would also provide a platform to facilitate the green agenda in addressing issues of unemployment and poverty in the continent.

A growing number of sophisticated projects led by young people in schools and universities and community organisation across the nation such initiatives needs to be supported by the authorities who should continuously encourage young people so that we continue to be involved as adults instead of conducting one –time single issue projects that limit the impact ad validity of youth voice ,young people today are becoming life long advocates with sophisticated understanding of divergent actions for social economical development.
