The 96th season of the Young People’s Concerts (YPCs) will begin on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. with “Dancing Across the Universe — The Waltz,” the first program in this season’s series of YPCs, Music Across Borders, exploring how composers influence and pay tribute to each other. The program will feature waltzes and other dances by Rodgers, Mozart, Johann Strauss II, Khachaturian, Rosas, Tailleferre, and Tchaikovsky. It will mark the New York Philharmonic debuts of conductor Gemma New; American Public Media’s Performance Today host Fred Child; astronomer Amy Mainzer from PBS Kids’s Ready Jet Go!, who will appear via videos created for this YPC explaining the science behind merry-go-rounds and more; Dance Theatre of Harlem former principal dancer Paunika Jones and Dance Theatre of Harlem hip-hop instructor Lacey Thomas; and scriptwriter / director Kirya Traber.

Attendees are invited to arrive early to take part in YPC Overtures, at which children meet Philharmonic musicians and try out orchestral instruments on the Grand Promenade and upper tiers of Hall. Other pre-concert activities include the VYC Showcase, live performances onstage of works by students in the Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program, inspired by the YPC’s thematic content, and performed by Philharmonic musicians.
