JOB TITLE Ocean Conservation & Education Coordinator Reports to: Conservation Director

STATUS: Full Time/Exempt ​

POSITION SUMMARY The Ocean Conservation & Education Coordinator (Coordinator) will work closely with the California Conservation Manager and Conservation and Communications Manager to help conserve California’s marine protected areas (MPAs), with an emphasis on San Diego County’s 17,779 acres of MPAs, and assist in the conservation and management of 18,000 acres of ​ coastal and marine ecosystems located at the United States-Mexico border. ​ The Coordinator will work specifically to broaden public and youth engagement with MPAs through new and existing MPA education, stewardship and conservation projects including but not limited to wetland restoration, cleanups, presentations, and student field trips. The Coordinator will provide logistical support to the San Diego County MPA Community Collaborative and support general WILDCOAST activities such as fundraising, events and staff development. The Coordinator will help support education, outreach, and engagement activities through hands-on activities and pollution awareness in the River Valley and throughout the coastal area of San Diego County. The Coordinator will manage both MPA and Border Programs volunteers and interns. Weekend work and frequent travel throughout San Diego will be required. Travel throughout California, Mexico, and in the U.S. (e.g. Washington D.C.) can be expected.

JOB DUTIES ● Coordinate public outreach and engagement activities for the MPA Program and Border Program projects. ● Develop and coordinate (new and existing) youth education, stewardship and recreation projects. ● Create and distribute outreach materials for different audiences. ● Support the MPA Watch Program, including coordinating and leading MPA Watch trainings in San Diego County. ● Develop relevant stories for WILDCOAST social media and media outlets. ● Attend regional, state, and national forums and meetings on MPA management and implementation, including the San Diego County MPA Community Collaborative meetings. ● Represent WILDCOAST to partners, outside agencies, volunteers, media, and potential donors. ● Fundraise for program activities through writing grant applications and participating in fundraising events. ● Administrative tasks including oversight of project grant-writing, contracts/agreements, tracking, reporting, and data collection. ● Manage MPA and Border Programs volunteers. ● Support other WILDCOAST projects as needed.

REQUISITE SKILLS / EDUCATION Education: Minimum BA/BS in , environmental science, natural resource ​ management, marine science or any related field. MA/MS preferred. Skills: Strong writing and communication skills. Scientific understanding of coastal and marine ​ ecology. Must be a go-getter with the capacity to work independently and must be an enthusiastic and passionate ocean conservationist. Ability to work with a variety of people from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Ability to endure physically demanding field conditions including but not limited to extreme weather conditions, walking long distances, and lifting equipment and supplies over 40 lbs. Excellent coordination, leadership, writing, communication and management skills. Experience: Previous experience in marine sciences, conservation education, and/stewardship ​ programs. Familiarity and/or work experience with California’s MPA network is preferred. Other Requirements: Must have or be able to obtain a valid passport and California drivers ​ license. Must be able to pass a background check to work with children.
