Have you ever wondered how far the Sun is away from the Earth? In ancient times, astronomers calculated the Earth-Sun distance by means of Moon phases or the size of the Earth’s shadow, but the distance thus arrived was several tens of times below the actual value. Only until the 17th and 18th century did astronomers begin to estimate the Earth-Sun distance using the transit of Venus. They found the value to be about 150 million km. Since then, humans gradually appreciate the vastness of our Universe! How is the transit of Venus used to measure the Earth-Sun distance? One of the methods is briefly described here.
Using the orbital periods of planets, the German astronomer Johannes Kepler discovered the relative distances among planets. For instance, the ratio of the Earth-Venus distance to the Earth-Sun distance is found to be 0.28.

First of all, observations of the transit are to be conducted at two distant places on Earth. Owing to angular difference, the positions of Venus Transit of Mercury is similar to the Transit of Venus but occurs more frequently. Then why do astronomers as viewed at the two places are not identical. refrain from using the transit of Mercury to calculate Earth-Sun distance? The reason lies in the planet’s close proximity to the Sun. Even if simultaneous observations are carried out at two very distant locations on Earth, the parallax would still be too small to allow accurate measurement. As a matter of fact, even the greatest parallax obtained using the transit of Venus is still less than 0.02 degree.

Through comparing photos taken during transit, we can find angle ǀ, which is also called the “parallax”. Given the straight-line distance between A and B, the Earth-Venus distance can be obtained using simple trigonometry. This method of measuring distance is called “the method of parallax”.
