The new road from Mount Gambier, and the Jetty, were opened together on Aoril 10, 1861. Coulthard had the contract for both, and for a time the Jetty was known as 'Coulthard's Jetty'. A Life-Boat Shed was erected in 1863 and demolished in 1957. The Jetty needed frequent repairs due ch1efly to the roughness of the sea. During the 1930's depress1on the Government marked it for destruction, but Mr. I Feast Snr. led local residents in a 'Save the Jetty Movement' At the t1me it was in disrepair and had little use, but today serves the crayfish industry.

Prior to the construction of an artifical outlet from Lake Bonney to the sea, following European settlement, water overflowed from the lake to Bucks Lake and thus flowed to the sea at Carpenters Rocks. Though the water level is now considerably reduced it still remains an area of seml permanent open water surrouned by swamp sedgeland. Natural vegetation in this area includes Chaffy Saw-Sedge and Sea Rush with small areas of Saltwater Paper Bark. Other plant spec1es away from the water include Dryland Tea-tree, Coastal Daisy Bush, Golden Wattle and Coastal Wattle. The Swamp Antechinus and the Swamp Bush-rat inhabit areas of the park. In addition the park is an excellent water-bird habitat.
