Free Software and Open Source Foundation For Africa, Tanzania chapter in collaboration with Free/ Libre Open Source Software well wishers in Tanzania, would like to invite professional, College students, and Individuals to participate in a Software Freedom Day Conference to be held at COSTECH, on 15th September, 2012. The Conference will be graced by Honorable January Makamba, (MP), Deputy Minister, Ministry Of Information and Communication Technology, United Republic Of Tanzania. There is no attendance fee, the Conference is free, thanks to our sponsors and supporters.

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) are modern computer technology of choice to run servers, networks, or content management systems, as well as operating systems such as Linux, and business and office applications such as OpenOffice. As FOSS is adaptable and does not entail annual license fees, it is particularly useful when applications need to be adapted to a local context. FOSS is a key technology to drive innovation, add local value and create sustainable and affordable ICT Solutions.

Today, open source runs most of the technologies that we use. More than half of all mobile devices being sold run the open source Android operating system. More than a 3rd of worlds Domain Name Server (DNS), run on BIND, literally the glue that keeps the Internet together, which is open source. Over 70% of the web pages on the Internet are hosted on the open source Apache web server, while about 95% of the world's super computers run on Linux, arguably the most successful open source project. Nearly all the popular social media applications like Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, YouTube etc, are built on open source tools. The Internet would probably not be as pervasive as we know it today if it was not for free and open source software.

In Tanzania, open source solutions have been deployed in many higher learning institutions, government agencies, private sector etc and most of all there is increased usage of open source software operating systems such as for desktop, laptops, palmtops, and servers. Meanwhile, the conference will address how FOSS can be used to solve socio-economic challenges such as job creation , improve quality life, entertainment, education, create and shape current and future businesses, and many more challenges seen in our daily life, it will also create more awareness and open doors for more opportunities and contribute significantly to our socio-economic development. What is Software Freedom Day? The Software Freedom day is a concept that was started by the Software Freedom Foundation and is aimed to celebrate the FOSS movement and community. It is also meant to educate the public about the benefits of using FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business. SFD is held every 3rd Saturday of September and organized by local FOSS communities. This year, 238 groups will be celebrating Software Freedom Day across the World, including Tanzania..
