This pretty little coop is 10 x 12 and made of wood with metal siding. The green walls, red shutters and door, and flower boxes make it look like people, not chickens, live in it.

The coop is a joint project between next door neighbors. Everyone shares in the care and responsibility of the chickens as well as the

eggs and the fun.

Sunshine Community garden has had a chicken coop co-op since 1997. The current coop (2005) was designed and constructed by members. The smaller coop was built by a garden volunteer. Both coops were constructed primarily out of recycled materials.

The first coop is approximately 20'x30' and houses the majority of the chickens, some of which are at least 10 years old. The second coop is 5'x20' and houses 4 chickens. The chickens supply garden members with eggs and chicken manure for their compost heaps.

Wander through the gardens on your way to

the chicken coops and enjoy looking, but Pparallel to Burnet and Lamar and between 45th and 49th street please don’t pick the veggies or flowers.

The chickens are great additions to the family - providing fun, eggs and compost.

7 8817 Laverty Place http://bit.ly/hu89m1 10 12 Chickens: Barred Plymouth Rock, Cuckoo Marans, Welsummer, Australorp, Silkies, Easter Egger

The owners used salvaged timbers from a 1920’s house to build their 8x10 coop. Note the interesting art work on the side of the coop.

The chickens in this household provide pest control, eggs, compost and endless hours of entertainment. The flock includes a special needs chicken who doesn’t know it, and loves to be part of the action.

The owner says: “I raise chickens to learn and be more involved with the food I eat. I have a decent size (128 sq ft) organic garden as well and I compost the manure for use as fertilizer as well. I grew up in an urban environment but always had a small garden. The chickens are just one more piece in the puzzle. I love having them around.”

12 1804 Rogge 37, 137, 300 3 Chickens: White Leghorns

This sturdy 10x6 tractor is made entirely of metal. It is easy to move around and provides good predator protection.

13 1713 E. 38th St. 21, 22, 320 2 Chickens: Buff Orpingtons

The owners built this 8x4 chicken tractor from plans they found on the internet. It has attracted a lot of interest from visitors wanting a good DIY coop for their flock.

14 3701 Vineland Dr. 21, 22, 320, 350 3 Chickens: Rhode Island Reds

What could be easier for a chicken coop than a repurposed children’s playhouse?

Measuring 4x4, the owners added a roost, nest box and predator protection, and were set to go.

All chicken droppings are used for compost. The Broiler tractor is rotated around the gardens for the chickens to scratch up any insect pests, add a bit of fertilizer, and turn under composting materials to improve the soil.

The owners also raise dairy goats, and have organic gardens, a fruit orchard, and a rainwater collection system.
