BRIAN T. DANFORTH Supporter’s Page In His Memory

In memoriam of Brian T. Danforth for his compassion, commitment and ardent support of Homeless Veterans. Brian was adamant there be no homeless Veterans in the state of Maine. He became a tireless leader in the community committed to resolving the issue. The Commander of the Son's of the American Legion has the honor of choosing a project to work on over the course of their leadership. Brian served two terms as Maine's Commander and each year took on "Homeless Veterans" as his project.

Brian’s first event to raise money was a local talent show and BBQ which netted $1,100 for the homeless assistance fund. He then added an antique auction generating $5,000. In June 2010, under Brian's leadership, the Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary State Departments challenged each other to see which organization could raise the most on behalf of Maine homeless Veterans. Each team raised well over $15,000! The VA Maine Health Care SystemVoluntary Service Department gratefully accepted more than $30,000 for the Homeless Veterans Assistance fund from this one, very successful challenge. Brian organized two Debbie Myers & Friends concerts. In 2011, Debbie was inspired to record an album, with the proceeds donated to the Department of Veterans Affairs Homeless Assistance fund.

While the Department of Veterans Affairs budget for Homeless Programs has grown by millions, the front lines still scramble to secure many basic items: security deposits, mattresses and bedding, dishes and cleaning supplies, shower curtains, and towels, and a table and chair. Brian's passionate commitment ensured that Maine's Homeless Veterans were given basic necessities when moving from the floor of a shelter, a tent or a vehicle to affordable housing, like the Brian T. Danforth House, owned by Community Housing of Maine.

Brian was the recipient of many awards, including the national “Unsung Hero Award", given in recognition of his commitment to homeless Veterans by the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans. His greatest reward was seeing homeless Veterans find a home.

Support Page’s A Message from Debbie

Hi Everyone,

I want to welcome you to this wonderful event. About 4 years ago Brian Danforth told me the number of how many Homeless Veterans there were in the State of Maine, and it just didn’t seem possible and it definitely didn’t seem right to me. He had a passion to make this horrid situation better and I agreed to help. We worked as a team and had such fun doing things together. This year is different. I’ve lost my partner, my good friend. I will miss him. He put his heart and soul in contributing to our Veterans. I’ve decided to continue his dream! At first I felt I was flying solo but somehow I believe with Brian’s spirit and his help he’s made it possible and easier for me to connect with a group of people who all have that same goal. I can’t thank all these wonderful people enough. Seriously amazing!

To everyone on this journey I thank you from the bottom of heart for making this event happen and the ones to come.

I love you lots and I am so grateful to have you for my friends.

Debbie
