4. Discussion/Action: a. Objectives for grades 7 and 8 to include 7.2 (Gender Separate): Students will identify the components of the male and reproductive systems and describe how their functioning changes during . Descriptive Statement: In addition to identifying the parts of the male and female reproductive systems, the following topics will be discussed: , , , , and nocturnal emissions. and fertilization will be reviewed during instruction of menstruation. During instruction of menstruation, sexual intercourse and fertilization will be reviewed and primary amenorrhea will be introduced. Primary amenorrhea is defined as not having the first menstrual period by age 16. Emphasis will be placed on there being a broad range of ages when it is normal for menstruation to begin.

8.1 (Gender Separate): Students will review the physical, social, and emotional changes that occur during adolescence and identify and describe the anatomy and physiology of the reproductive systems.

Descriptive Statement: Instruction includes a brief review of the effects of hormonal changes on social and emotional development and focuses on the physical changes that occur during puberty. Topics include internal and external structures, erections, , nocturnal emissions, and the menstrual cycle including review of primary amenorrhea and introduction of secondary amenorrhea (absence of menstruation after regular menstrual cycles have been established), erections, ejaculations, and nocturnal emissions.

b. Female Genital Mutilation • DOE Objective 12.8 The student will identify ways of preventing and/or coping with various types of violence and abuse. Descriptive Statement: Content includes issues associated with dating violence, spouse abuse, , sexual violence, human trafficking, physical and verbal child abuse, family violence, electronic harassment, and abuse of the elderly and disabled; violence prevention strategies, and identification of local support groups and agencies. Emphasis is placed on abuse as an unacceptable form of behavior that should not be tolerated. The need to report violence to appropriate authorities and agencies is presented as well as methods of reporting. Students will understand why it is important to report violence and abuse to the proper authorities and/or agencies and how to report it safely. Instruction also includes information about the harmful effects of female genital mutilation, associated criminal penalties, and the rights of the victim including civil action. Instruction may also address the prevention and recognition of child abduction, child abuse, child sexual exploitation, and child sexual abuse. Students will demonstrate the ability to seek services as needed when coping with violence.
