Bolton Parish Council (BPC) is a formal statutory body, the “grass roots” tier of local government. We raise a precept (a budget collected through the Council Tax) every year and spend it on local community needs such as grass cutting, support to community groups, and maintaining and insuring council-owned assets. Details of our income and expenditures can be found on the village web-site. In addition to the precept, we raise significant sums of money for various community projects through grant applications.

We represent your interests and work on your behalf with Council, County Council, Central Government and other authorities. Our 7 parish councillors are unpaid volunteers, elected for a 4 year period. They are supported by a Clerk who is also the Responsible Financial Officer. Contact details are as follows:

THE MEMORIAL HALL FIELD is our recreation area and includes play facilities for youngsters, a multi activity ball facility, picnic necbhes and plenty of open space for other outdoor activities. The field is often used for walking dogs: owners are kindly reminded to pick up after their dog and deposit the bag in any waste bin. It is an offence not to pick up dog waste, and offenders will be reported to the Community Dog Warden and can be fined.

We do not require that dogs are kept on a lead in the field, as long as you are fully in control. If not, please respect others who may dislike or be intimidated by dogs and keep it on a lead. Dogs are prohibited from the Playground for obvious reasons.

The June Field Day is the annual village fete, held on the Memorial Hall Field. It raises essential funds for the upkeep of the Hall. All are welcome to get involved: an open planning meeting is held in the pub several months in advance. All ideas and offers of help are welcome.

ACTIVITIES, ORGANISATIONS AND CLUBS For a small village, Bolton offers a wide range of activities that are generally open to all. If you have ideas for other activities do let us know, especially if you are willing to help run them! Many of them take place in the Memorial Hall.

o The “Exchange”. This is a chance to meet the rest of the community and share a cuppa, enjoy a homemade cake or biscuit and chat in a totally informal setting. It takes place in the Memorial Hall every Tuesday afternoon and is open to everyone. On most Tuesdays it opens from 2.30 to 4pm. However, on the first Tuesday of the month, a more substantial lunch is on offer from 1 pm until 3.30. In winter this comprises a selection of home made soups and scrumptious desserts, with unlimited tea or coffee. In summer, we offer savoury bakes, salads and again a selection of desserts. The all-in price is £5.00 - a true bargain. These events are very popular so arrive promptly at 1pm! At the Exchange we also provide a Library Service in conjunction with Cumbria County Council. There are also stalls selling homemade cards and handicrafts (and occasionally local garden produce), a book exchange, and information boards.

The Exchange is run entirely by volunteers and without this support it could not thrive or survive. The commitment is not great – just once per month – so please get involved as the rewards to the community are so beneficial. For more details contact: ▪ Chairperson – Lesleyann Morgan 61529 ▪ Secretary – Cathy Smith - 62862 ▪ Treasurer – John Cotter – 61209
