Beverages sold alongside the latest Hollywood hits soon may be a little stronger than soft drinks. Local Christiansburg theater Regal New River Valley Stadium 14 has started the appli- cation process for a license to sell beer and wine on-site. Applications for alcohol licenses are handled by the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (VA ABC). “It’s really a three-part process,” said Kathleen Shaw, public relations manager for the VA ABC. “The first part is document collection, the second part is an investigation of the business and the third part is a final approval.” Prospective alcohol purveyors are required to post two notices during the application process – one on the place of business, and one in a newspaper with general circulation in the area. After the initial newspaper publishing, a 30-day window is established for citizens to place objections to the request for an alcohol license. “There can be many objec- tions to a license,” Shaw said. Shaw says that one common complaint comes from community members who are worried that the alcohol sales may encourage more disruptive noise in the neighborhood.
