She wrote twenty or more plays which were produced on the London stage, as well as a dozen or more novels, several volumes ofpoetry, and numerous translations. She was the flrSt WOman VIiter tO Cam her living byher pen. After she became successful, a concerted attack was made on her, alleging a libertine life and inmoral behavior. Gradually, her life work was expunged from the seventeenth-century literary canon based on this alleged lifestyle. Since little factual information is available about her her life, critics have been happyto invent various scenarios. The only true understanding ofher attitudes is found in the reading ofher plays, not to establish autobiographical facts, but to understandher attitudes. Based on the evidence inher many depictions oflibertine men in her satirical comedies, she disliked male libertines and foundtheir behavior deplorable. in plays and poetry, her longing for a new social order in which men and women micht love andrespect one another in freely chosen wedlock is the dominant theme. Far from being libertine, Aphra Behn is an early pioneer for companionate marriage. -
Beauvoir's Lecture on the Metaphysical Novel and Its Contemporary Critiques
Simone de Beauvoir Studies Volume 29 2013-2014 20 BEAUVOIR’S LECTURE ON THE METAPHYSICAL NOVEL AND ITS CONTEMPORARY CRITIQUES JO BOGAERTS It has been suggested that Simone de Beauvoir’s concept of the metaphysical novel was developed as a response to criticism of “philosophical literature.” The intersection of literature and philosophy, which was not only evident in the writings of fellow existentialists Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, but also in the works of Georges Bataille, Jean Grenier, Gabriel Marcel, Brice Parain and Jean Wahl, was often rejected as being “merely” allegorical. As a form of allegorical writing, existentialist literature would once again have served as philosophy’s handmaiden by expounding the tenets of a philosophical system. Beauvoir scholars have recently set out to prove both the literary and the philosophical value of Beauvoir’s work, as well as her intellectual autonomy vis-à-vis Sartre. The concept of the metaphysical novel has proven indispensable for this task, as it often furnished the very basis on which Beauvoir’s literary work was reread and reevaluated. However, in doing so, scholars have failed to investigate the contemporary reception of Beauvoir’s lecture and turned a blind eye to possible criticisms that could be made of her concept. While maintaining a firm belief in literature’s ability to. unveil metaphysical aspects of human existence, Beauvoir abandoned the critical use of this concept in the 1950s. Careful scrutiny suggests that she had formed the concept on the basis of ethical categories, thereby obscuring a literary-theoretical reflection and evoking questions about the relevance, viability, and technicality of the concept that are surprisingly absent from the secondary literature. -

In this paper, I investigate what Jason Wirth calls’ Bataille’s “mad game of writing” in order to show that Bataille’s bizarre writing style is actually an extension of his ethical and philosophical commitments. Bataille’s writing attempts to produce a state within the reader rather than simply transmit information. I trace the justifications and roots for such a writing from his own system, as well as showing how such a style of writing has its roots in Kantian aesthetics and in Hegel’s Phenomenology. I live by tangible experience and not by logical explanation. I have of the divine an experience so mad that one will laugh at me if I speak of it. -

The inherent contradictions and interdisciplinary scope of his work have given rise to many different versions of ‘Bataille’. However one common feature to the many different readings is his status as a marginal figure, whose work is used to challenge existing intellectual orthodoxies. This thesis thus examines the reception of Bataille in the Anglophone world by focusing on how the marginality of his work has been interpreted within a number of key intellectual scenes. -

Quinlan, University of Idaho From the opening pages of the Marquis de Sade’s L’His- toire de Juliette, a book which Maurice Blanchot has called the most scandalous ever written,1 readers are presented with repeated references to the relation between sensibility, the nerves and the human will. Sade’s characters are constantly asserting that they can unlock the secrets of physical and mental bliss by controlling their nervous sensibility and then pushing it into a transcendent realm of experience. In this place anything was possible. ENG3341G: “Sex, Death, and Philosophy: Libertinism and Eighteenth-Century British Literature” Winter 2018 – Mark McDayter Because the popular image of the 17th and 18th centuries still prevalent evokes an era of stuffy aristocrats wearing uncomfortably voluminous and elaborate clothing, the extent to which sexuality formed a vital preoccupation of life in the period sometimes comes as a surprise. In fact, the men and women of England in the Restoration period thought of sex as enormously important as an expression of identity and an articulation of the human relationship to the world around. And they seem, on the basis of the literature and art of the time, to have engaged in a great deal of it. “Sex, Death, and Philosophy: Libertinism and Eighteenth-Century British Literature” (ENG3341G) is an honours course devoted to literary and cultural articulations of the phenomenon of “libertinism” as it was expressed from about 1660 to 1748. Libertinism represented a particular and surprisingly broad-ranging perspective on the world, and the place of humans within it: it addressed the shape of the cosmos, the mechanisms of human nature and understanding, and complexity of ethical and political structures and behaviour. And for many if not most libertines, sexuality stood as the ultimate human expression of the “freedom” that was promised (or threatened) by their radical philosophy. We will be reading libertinism through the lense of a variety of genres, including lyric and satirical poetry, drama, prose romance, the novel, and philosophical discourse. We will additionally be discussing the political, cultural, ideological, and social contexts that informed libertinism. The focus of the course is upon two authors who made important (and very different) contributions to the idea, expression, and indeed lifestyle of the libertine, John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester, and Aphra Behn, but other authors whose work we will be addressing include Thomas Hobbes, the Earl of Dorset, George Etherege, and Eliza Haywood, and John Cleland. -

Rickless Abstract: Scholars disagree about the nature of the doctrinal apparatus that supports Berkeley’s case for passive obedience to the sovereign. Is he a rule-utilitarian, or natural law theorist, or ethical egoist, or some combination of some or all these elements? Here I argue that Berkeley is an act-utilitarian who thinks that one is more likely to act rightly by following certain sorts of rules. I also argue that Berkeley mischaracterizes and misevaluates Locke’s version of the social contract theory. Finally, I consider the potentially practically self-defeating nature of Berkeley’s claim that there is no obligation to submit to the rule of “madmen” or “usurpers.” Controversy has long swirled, and continues to swirl, around the proper way to understand the nature, grounds, and limits of George Berkeley’s argument for passive obedience. As Berkeley describes it, passive obedience requires all human beings under sovereign rule not to forcibly resist enforcement of the legal prohibitions promulgated by the sovereign and to accept the penalties established by the sovereign for refusing (on grounds of conscience) to perform legally required actions. -

The University of VOX Divinity Magazine Issue 1, April 2015 Welcome to the first issue of Vox: The University of Divinity Magazine. Change is the dominant characteristic of our time. Our world continues to respond to phenomenal developments in knowledge, technology, and imagination, yet struggles more and more with the age-old problems of war, injustice, and poverty. In Australia, the university sector is undergoing a once-in-a-generation transformation, the end of which is uncertain. The University of Divinity, too, has experienced transformational change in recent years. In 2012 we attained University status, building on the century of achievements of the Melbourne College of Divinity, founded in 1910. We have grown to include new Colleges and new parts of the Christian tradition, notably the Coptic Orthodox Church. Our vision, therefore, is to empower our learning community to speak into this ever-changing world, to respond to the changes around us, and to be Professor Peter Sherlock agents of change, always grounded in the riches of our ancient theological traditions. In a brilliant discussion of a group of compelling works of prose fiction by freethinking authors whose flamboyant life styles, radical ideas, and auda cious attacks on the established order made their literary productions suspect, Joan De Jean demonstrates that the issues at the heart of the libertine enterprise—autobiography, madness, fragmentation, and dialogue—are precisely those that define the problematic modernity of these works. In detailed analyses of Theophile de Viau's Fragments d'une his toire comique, Charles SorePs Francion, Tris tan L'Hermite's Lepage disgracie, Cyrano de Bergerac's L'Autre Monde and Estats et empires du soleil, D'Assoucy's Avantures, and Chapelle's Voyage a Encausse, Professor DeJean explores the complex nonfictional literary genres with which they have tradi tionally been associated. Occupying an unstable middle ground be tween autobiography and the novel, the works of the libertines are, with one exception, all written in the first person, a marked departure from the dominant literary tradition of the ro man heroique. They reflect both structurally and thematically the problems of an existence that is at once lived and invented. Investigat ing these problems, DeJean provides an ori ginal interpretation of the libertines* obsession with naming, analyzes their perchant for fic tionalizing history, and studies their peculiar ambivalence about persecution.
