Kevin Gawne lost most of his wordly possessions in a fire at his Hanning Road, Pirongia indus- trial site on Tuesday, but he did retrieve his classic Ford ‘57 T-Bird. Mr Gawne was grateful that no- one was injured in the spectacular blaze that destroyed the large workshop complex that he shares on the site with Action Auto- motive. He was also relieved that the fire was prevented from spreading to the even larger main workshop alongside, occupied by Action Automotive and C1 South. Mr Gawne was welding in the workshop prior to the fire and believes this may have sparked the blaze. He returned from visiting Action Automotive owner Grant Burr in his workshop to find the fire well involved. The pair rapidly retrieved what they could from the burning build- ing and tried to quell the blaze before firefighters arrived to take over. Matt Lawrence is an apprentice for Contact Electrical, Mark Riddle a church minister and James Barclay a workshop assistant with The Honda Shop. They come from a diverse range of backgrounds. One thing they have in common is that a year ago they decided to take up the challenge to become firefighters in Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade. They wanted to contribute to their community. Nearing the end of a 12 month duration of training, James Barclay is about to complete his probationary period to become a basic grade firefighter in Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade. He has found new skills in his bid to earn his yellow helmet — the symbol of a firefighter that has acquired skills to ride a fire appliance in an operational capacity. After accepting the challenge, James has been trained by a world class organisation. He attended the seven day recruit firefighter’s course at the NZ Fire Services Training Centre at Rotorua. Leading up to the course, he and his fellow TC141010SP14 recruits spent four months preparing for the course TWO of Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade’s latest intake of recruits to complete their firefighter training, Matt Lawrence (left) under the guidance of the Te Awamutu Fire and James Barclay. Brigade’s Training Officers. This included physical training in the brigade gym, as well as developing the application of skills needed and familiarity with equipment used by firefighters. There was pre-course theory which the group studied together. The skills required are many and varied, ranging from practical firefighting to com- puter based operations. Benefits that the group have discovered include the camaraderie that makes the up the brigade’s culture, self-development whilst gaining first hand experience in challenging situations and acquisition of NZQA unit standards that add to their skill base that will benefit employers of volunteers. The volunteer firefighter has a challenging role — expectations, commitment and responsibility are high. It takes a special type of person to meet the challenge, particularly in a busy brigade such as Te Awamutu,. Equally the rewards are high, as the new recruits have come to realise as they continue to develop in their roles as part of the team in Te Awamutu. Individually they will find their niche — some will move onto greater responsibilities and some will continue as firefighters. All are equally valued when an emergency call is received. ‘‘It can be pretty exciting at times,’’ James Barclay says. ‘‘You never know what you are going to be doing next. You can be fighting a house fire one day, then helping extricate people from a motor vehicle crash the next. Yeah its pretty cool!’’ The Brigade is now calling for new applicants for this year’s recruitment. Email a letter of interest to the Brigade’s Recruiting Officer at [email protected]. Applications close on Thursday, October 28. 7699826AB

Ashford shoots three-over-par

Former club champion Shayne Ashford appreci- ated the improved playing conditions when shooting 73 off-the-stick at Stewart Alexander Golf Club. Ashford accumulated 42 stableford points to jointly head the field on Sunday with Dave Heta, who continued his good run of form. Other players to feature were Ant Imeson with 41 points, Colin Clarke, Neal Johnson 40 and Keith Hawtin, Dennis Morgan 39. Mel Brown shot 78 gross. Beth Walker leads the club’s women with 69 net after round one of the Joy Gyde Memorial. Her nearest rivals are Cheryl Forster on 71, Barbara Dench, Ann Hayes 72, Sylvia Brain 73. LGU winners were C. Forster (silver) with 71 net, Carol Formosa (bronze I) 81, B. Walker (bronze II) 69 and Ange Way (bronze III) 82. This Sunday sees the annual open ‘Mulligan’ tournament take place. The figure of speech ‘Mulligan’ relating to golf was made famous by President Bill Clinton when he played a round at Queenstown several years ago. In essence, it means if you have a bad shot, you can take another one according to what your handicap is. Apparently the local professional who played with Clinton was not impressed and apparently told him so. Nevertheless, Stewart Alexander has adapted the format as a fun day tournament. ...
