It was established on July 15, 1926, as an Arts College under the University of Calcutta. In 1985, the College got affiliated to Vidyasagar University. The Institution has been re-accredited by the NAAC in 2015. It was Awarded the status of “College with Potential for Excellence (CPE)” by UGC in 2016. Presently, more than seven thousand students are studying in UG, PG and B.Ed. The College has established Research Centre under the aegis of Vidyasagar University with an objective to undertake and promote sound and original research activities in the disciplines of Social Sciences and Natural Sciences leading to award of Ph.D. Degree. The prime objective of the College is to shine in research activities and ensure academic excellence. The College is well-equipped with many the modern facilities including a Central Library.

KAIKALA CHETANA (KC) is a registered NGO located at Ichhapur Village under Kaikala Panchayet of Haripal Block in . It is unswerving providing Stimulating Education to the poor and disadvantaged children of rural areas over last 25 years. It runs Community-Based, Open- Air Children’s Learning Centres in the villages. At present, over 600 children of 3 to 14 years of age are beneficiary of the Education Project. It has a realistic and experiment based methodical curriculum evolved over the years. The learning delivery system is highly inventive, perceptive and competent to develop self-confidence, thinking, self-esteem and problem solving skills among the disadvantaged and poor children. Kaikala Chetana runs a Mobile Library and has strong Science and Cultural Units. It also works with the children of migrant brick kiln workers. It provided extensive relief support to the needy rural families affected by lockdown and cyclone.
