And in unprecedented action, the Board voted a special defensive MVP award to Blair's Forrie Martin..premier linebacker. Bishop Amat's dynamic aerial duo...Haden to McKay...fractured CIF passing records in every direction during the past season. The 5-11, 165-pound senior quarterback, who directed the Amat Lancers to the"AAAA" Division crown defeating Lakewood 18-17 in overtime, com piled remarkable three-year marks. Haden attempted 850 passes, com pleted 537 for 7,633 yards and 82 . His completion percent age was a flashy 62 percent. Haden's number one target and a marked receiver every time the Lancers stepped out on the field, John McKay gathered in 207 aerials during his three seasons, for 3,389 yards and lj.8 touchdowns. He av eraged 1 6 . 1), yards per reception. Blair's Forrie Martin, returning to the "AAAA" first team for the second year as does both Pat Haden and John McKay, was singled out for special "defensive MVP" recognition.... something the United Sav ings/Helms Board had never done previously. A 6-1, 220-pound line backer, Martin was heralded throughout the Southland in 1970 for his superb linebacking. "A player with great speed and strength and the best hitter in Southern California^'is the way coach Bob Harris salutes his star. Aside from the three MVPs listed above two other players are back on the "AAAA" honor teams for the second year. Lakewood end Rick Gillies was a 2nd teamer in 1969, while Centennial's Carlos McCall was a third-team choice in last year's selections. Bishop Amat, a single point loser to Blair in the title game last year, 28-27, turned the table in 1970, doing the same thing to Lakewood, 18-17. The game ended 17-17 over the regulation distance, with a tie-breaking system based on yardage, being employed...thus Bishop Amat's one point bulge. Three teams of 16 players, including place kickers, were named at the 1970 selection meeting, choices made by Southland sports journ alists. . PAST C.I.F. UNITED SAVINGS ■-H ELMS HALL B 7 6 D VEN í C E B D U LEVAR D LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA 9 0 0 3 4 , BONITA HIGH'S ACE TAILBACK, TOP "AAA" FOOTBALL PLAYER POR 1970 SEASON POR RELEASE: TUESDAY, DEC. 29th and after...... DO NOT RELEASE PRIOR TO DEO. 29 a.m. Allen Carter, Bonita High Bearcats' tailback and the most excit ing runner in the school's history since Glenn Davis won MVP honors there back in 19l;2, has been named CIF "AAA" Division Player of the Year by members of the United Savings/Helms All-Southem California Board of Football met to make their annual grid selections. Twenty-five sports journalists from throughout the Southland met recent ly at the Airport Marina Hotel in Playa Del Rey to make 3i+th annual selections, which date back to 1937. The Bonita Flash, Allen Carter, was a unanimous Board selection for Player of the Year honors. A first team selection last year as a junior, Carter was phenomenal on the football field in 1970. He gained over 2,000 yards on the ground and scored over 200 points, as he led his Bearcats to the San Antonio League title and to the semi-finals of the "AAA" Division playoffs. Carter's career rushing marks at Bonita are 388 total yards on i;06 carries for 70 touchdowns and a 1 0 .8-yard average. Bonita beat Rancho Alamitos (27-11;), Estancia (15-11;) and then was dumped by Lompoc, 20-10. Carter was far below par in this final CIF "AAA" playoff engagement against Lompoc due to injury. Edison, CIF three A champions, placed four players on the three honor teams.... two, back Jerry Hinojosa and end Craig Mortenson, on the first team. The Chargers, champions of the Irvine League, defeated Sunny Hills (20-7), Rolling Hills {Í4.I—8 ), West Covina (28-7) and in the final game, Lompoc (13-0) for the "AAA" 1970 championship. The Lompoc Braves, placing back Roy Howell and linebacker Jim Surch on the "AAA" 1st team, managed to win impressively over three opponents before losing the 13-0 shutout to Edison. The Braves beat Newbury Park (Í4.6-6 ), Kennedy (21;-IL) and Bonita (20-10) in achieving the runner-up spot. For having been selected the top performer in "AAA" football for 1970, Allen Carter will be recipient of the United Savings/Helms Athletic Foundation medallion award citing him for Player of the Year honors. Carter will receive his award along with other athletes named for first team Los Angeles City and Southern California CIF honors on Saturday morning Jan. 23. The site for the awards program has yet to be decided upon. This will mark the 31; th year that all-star team selections have been made, with awards going to honored players and coaches. Eight players are back from last year's honor teams, while one, Rick Holoubek the great Wilson Mule, has been a member of the All City team each of the past three years. Coach Lou Bimbaum's Hollywood High School Sheiks placed five performers on the offense and two on the defensive elevens for all league honors, as members of United Savings/Helms Athletic Foundation's board of high school athletics met at the Los Angeles sports shrine to make their annual all-star team selections in cooperation with the league coaches. The Sheik's Bill Flannagan, on last year's second all-league team, was the Player of the Year selection in the East-Valley, with coaches and writers alike agreed that he was the class in league action. Hollywood squeaked by Northern League co-champ Franklin in the playoff's first round, 3-0 and then dropped a 27-18 decision to San Fernando, 27-18. The Sheiks wound up the year with an 8-2 record. League runner-up Sylmar lost its first playoff game to Western Loop champ Hamilton, 21-15. All-league selections in the Los Angeles section of the CIF have been made by United Savings/Helms Athletic Foundation with the cooper ation of league coaches since 1937» All players named for awards are recipients of scroll awards, with duplicate copies going to each school for its trophy case.

Coach Ray Vernoy's Huntington Park Spartans ran off with the Eastern League title for 1970 with a perfect 5-0 league mark and an 8-1 season record. Player of the Year honors went to Spartan QB Mark Montgomery, a solid choice of both league coaches and United Savings/Helms Board members. Montgomery passed for 10 TDs, while completing 62 of 126 aerials for 1,016 yards. Coach Vernoy credits Montgomery with being "an outstanding 3 year varsity letterman." The Spartans had rough sledding in the city playoffs, dropping their initial encounter to Mid-Valley League runners-up Granada Hills 28-12. Jordan, runner-up to H.P. in the Eastern Loop standings didn' fare any better, losing to strengthy Fremont 1^8-0 in the first round. Seven players are back off last year's All-Eastern all-stars, with four — Garfield's Gil Viveros and Ben Esparza, HP's A1 Ocampo and Roosevelt's Ross Roberts — first team defensive stalwarts among them. All players named for All-Eastern League honors for 1970 will be recipients of United Savings/Helms Athletic Foundation scroll awards. Records of all players named for all-star team honors are on file in the Los Angeles sport shrine's library.

Defending city champion Gardena was edged in the first playoff round by Manual Arts, Southern Loop runner-up, 6-0. With Banning and Carson disqualified, Narbonne filled the runner-up roll in the Marine League and beat West-Valley League champion El Camino Real 19—lip. The Gauchos weren't as fortunate in the second round however as they were upended by the tough Southern League kingpins, Fremont, 28-8. Banning's Clarence Reece was named the league's MVP, as he per formed equally well on offense and defense. He scored 77 points during the year and averaged 21 yards per catch. Clarence accounted for eight on defense and according to coach Chris Ferragamo, "he hasn't been beat yet on defense and is deadly tackier." All players named for 1970 All-Marine League honors will receive United Savings/Helms Athletic Foundation scroll awards and duplicate awards will go to the schools for their trophy roams.

Southern League champion Fremont placed eight performers on the Offense and Defense as United Savings/Helms Athletic Foundation prep selection board members met at Helms Hall to make their annual all star team selections...in cooperation with Southern League coaches. Los Angeles High School provided the Player of the Year selection in sharp-passing quarterback Larry Irvine. Larry provided plenty of fireworks during league action, but his heroics weren't enough to get the Romans into the playoffs in 1970. Champion Fremont, with a 7-0-2 mark, went to the third round of title action, dropping a hard-fought battle to San Fernando in the semi-finals, 20-1l+. In the first two playoff rounds Fremont defeated Jordan ¿4.8-0 and Narbonne, 28-8, Manual Arts also did well for the Southern League cause in upsetting defending city champion Gardena in the first round of the playoffs 6-0 and then bombing hapless Hamilton, ¿1.0 -0 , The Toilers then took their lumps, however, from Granada Hills, ^ . A„ll players named for honors on this season's All-Southern Loop teams will be recipients of scroll awards noting their achievements. Schools will receive duplicate scrolls for their trophy cases,

And it was El Camino1s Bob Glick, sparkling quarterback, who nailed down MVP honors, as board members scrutinized coaches recommendations over a several-hour period. El Camino Real was upset in the first round of the playoffs by l;th-place Marine League finisher Narbonne.... inserted intoplayoff action after Banning and Carson were disqualified. The score was 19 11;. Taft, league runner-up to El Camino, had no better luck getting out of the playoff blocks, losing to Wilson, Northern kingpin, 53-12. Reporting on his star QB Bob Glick, coach Rozadilla says, "A great thrower and team leader. Bob threw for 20 TDs, had a 55% comple tion average and 1,600 yards in total offense." All players named for all-league recognition will receive scroll awards for their 1970 gridiron efforts. Scrolls will be mailed to the schools for distribution by the coaches.

Holoubek, who has been All-Northern over the past two seasons made It three in a row, following a review of coaches and sportswriter1s recommendations. The Mules and the Franklin Panthers were co-champs in the Northern Loop for 1970, but neither team got very far in playoff action. Wilson whipped Taft in the opening round, 53-12, but then lost 35-29 to Gra nada Hills. Franklin was edged 3-0 by Hollywood in the first round. Coach Cuccia makes no bones about calling Holoubek, "The best back in the history of Wilson High SchoolJ" The Wilson mentor calls Rick "The complete football player...he kicks off, kicks extra points, runs exceptionally well, has kicked a 45-yard field goal and can play defense on any team. Accumulating approximately 6,000 yards in three varsity years, Rick completed 111+ of 185 passes in 1970, for 2,01+0 yards and 25 TDs. He had only six intercepted. He rushed for 1+60 yards and nine TDs, averaging Í+.08 yards per carry.
