Expendable Perforating Guns

Owen Oil Tools MAN-ERHSC

Owen Oil Tools has been manufacturing Expendable Retrievable Hollow Steel Carrier (ERHSC) gun systems in Canada since 1979 and continues to provide innovative products to the domestic and international markets. In order to fully appreciate the technical con- siderations in gun selection, consider the following glossary of per- forating gun terms.

Glossary

Gun OD: The outside diameter of the perforating gun measured in inches or millimetres. Typical combinations of perforating gun diameter and casing diameter are as follows:

Gun OD Smallest Casing OD mm inch mm inch 70 2.750 114.3 4.500 73 2.875 114.3 4.500 79 3.125 114.3 4.500 86 3.375 114.3 4.500 101 4.000 139.7 5.500 114 4.500 152.4 6.000 127 5.000 168.3 6.625

Note: Refer to specifications of each gun for minimum allowable restrictions.

MAN-ERHSC Owen Oil Tools Gun Length (metres or feet): The gun length in Canada is generally accepted industry wide as the linear distance from the center of the to the center of the bottom shot. Internationally, gun length is commonly accepted as the overall length of the carrier.

Bottom Shot Figure 1 of Upper Gun

Shot Density (shots/metre or shots/foot): This is the total number of shots contained within a unit length (one metre or one foot) of gun. The density can be calculated by dividing by 1 over the vertical distance between 2 charges (metres or feet).

Example

Vertical distance between 2 charges = 0.077 metres Shot Density = 1/0.077 = 13 shots/metre

Carrier Pressure Rating (MPa or psi): The safe working pressure that a carrier may Tandem Shot Spacing Tandem withstand under normal operating conditions. The pressure rating is determined by calculation and testing.

Carrier Tensile Strength (daN or lb): This is the maximum tensile rating of the gun Top Shot of carrier based on the limitations of the thread connection inside the carrier. Normal Lower Gun operating tensile loads on the gun during wireline and tubing conveyed perforating operations should be designed well below this value.

Carrier Thread: The description of the internal thread that has been machined inside the carrier. Tandem Shot Spacing (metres or feet): The vertical distance between the bottom shot of the upper gun to the top shot on the next gun. This will be the vertical space between shots in the casing to account for the length of the Tandem Sub and threads, as shown in Figure 2

Charge Phasing (degrees): The angular orientation of sequential charges. This phasing definition typically implies that the shaped charges are oriented in a helix. Special de- scriptions must accompany guns that contain shot clustering (or the grouping of multiple charges in a single plane), as shown in figure 1.

Description

Expendable Retrievable Hollow Steel Carrier (ERHSC) Gun Systems were developed to overcome certain problems inherent with Hollow Steel Carrier (HSC) or Port Guns. Port Guns consist of a thick walled pipe that accepts a threaded “Port Plug” and O-Ring. The charge is assembled in the gun by positioning the charge inside the carrier with a long grasping tong, inserting the alignment sleeve into the top of the charge, and then threading the Port Plug through the Carrier and onto the sleeve. The Port Gun carriers were designed for multiple runs by replacing the Port Plugs and shaped charges.

ERHSC Guns

The ERHSC gun systems are manufactured from pipe that has a wall thickness much thinner than the Port Guns and features a spotface or “scallop” at the charge location. Charges along with detonating cord are loaded into thin walled pipe called Charge Tubes then inserted into the Gun Carrier. The ERHSC guns are not reusable and must be discarded after each use.

Features and Benefits

„ Typically, ERHSC systems provide improved perforating charge performance when compared to HSC systems, due to the ability to accept a larger charge „ Installation of perforating charges and detonating cord is fast and simple compared to Port Gun Systems, reducing manpower costs for assembly „ System reliability is much higher due to significantly fewer O-rings (therefore, significantly fewer leak paths into the gun) „ Fluid sensitive and top fire detonators have added a higher degree of reliability to ERHSC gun systems

Owen Oil Tools MAN-ERHSC Subs for Expendable Retrievable Hollow Steel Carriers

Description

Gun connectors (or subs) are used to connect several gun lengths together and provide a means of attaching the gun system to wireline tools such as a collar locator. The gun subs also provide an automatic ballistic connection between guns when used in conjunction with the End to End Booster Kit or the Tandem Booster Kit. This combination ensures a simple and field proven method of ballistic transfer between subsequent gun systems. The same subs may be used when gun systems are configured for either wireline or tubing conveyed perforating applications.

Features and Benefits

„ The Top Sub is compatible with GO Thread (2.750-6 TPI Acme) making it a universal connector. „ Simple design of the Tandem Sub and Tandem Booster Kit permit easy installation even in field conditions or with long gun systems. „ Bottom Sub features a generous cavity that will accept a variety of industry standard detonators „ A groove is provided in all Top and Tandem Subs for easy installation of the Owen Gris Gun Wellhead Retainer Plate when running multiple gun assemblies. „ Various Tandem Sub designs allow for the use of a variety of select fire systems. Side ports are available to assist in arming the intermediate gun sections. „ Versions of top, tandem and bottom subs are available to hold propellant on the exterior of carriers. „ Pickup Subs provide a means of securing the guns for transport, protecting the gun thread and provide a fire protection melt out plug.
