The Blazers won the 1979 national championship and have made six other appearances in the national tournament. ntering his 25th season as the venerable head coach of Valdosta State’s Blazer baseball team, Tommy Thomas has enjoyed success gained by very few. In 24 E seasons, Thomas-led teams have compiled an overall record of 819-445, a .648 winning percentage. He became only the second NCAA Division II coach to win 800 games when the Blazers shut out Kennesaw State 7-0 early last season, and his 819 wins are the most among active Division II coaches. Seventeen of his 24 teams have reached post-season play, and seven teams have made it to the national tournament with the 1979 team winning the national championship. As a result, Thomas has been the recipient of numerous individual awards and honors. Following the national title year, he was named National Coach of the Year for NCAA Division II by the American Baseball Coaches Association. On six occasions he has been named the coach of the year, once in the NAIA Area V (1969) and five times in the NCAA South Atlantic region (1974, 1977, 1979, 1983 and 1985). The 51 -year-old Valdosta native received the BS degree from Valdosta State, where he was a four-year letterman in baseball from 1959-62, ending his career with a .316 batting average. - 5 - Assistant Coach Bart Shuman

art Shuman, who played shortstop at Valdosta State from 1976-79, returned to his alma mater last fall, succeeding Kip McLeod who returned to the public school system. Shuman was a three-year B starter on Blazer teams that went to post-season play in 1977, 1978 and 1979. A career .268 hitter, he was named to the all-national tournament team in 1979 when Valdosta State won the school’s only national championship. A graduate of Aucilla Christian Academy in his native Monticello, Fla., Shuman holds two degrees from Valdosta State, getting his B.S. in 1980 and his M.Ed. in 1983. He served as the Blazers’ graduate assistant while working on his master’s. Shuman served two tenures as head baseball coach at nearby Berrien County in Nashville, coaching the Rebels for nine season. His 1988 team recorded a perfect 31-0 record en route to the class AA state championship. Seven of his nine teams won region titles. He was head football coach and athletic director at Berrien County for two seasons before taking the VSC job. Shuman, 34, is married, and he and his wife Becky, a teacher who also holds two VSC degrees, are the parents of two children, Scott, 4, and Sloan, bom last December.

Graduate Assistant Brett Martin

rett Martin begins his second season as the Blazers’ graduate assistant coach. An outstanding catcher in high school at nearby B Clinch County, Martin led the Panthers to the state championship in 1986. He played one season at Valdosta State before transferring to Georgia where he received a bachelor of arts in journalism in 1990. In addition to being the baseball graduate assistant, Martin, who is single, coached the Blazer men’s and women’s cross country teams in the fall.
