Launched in I2013, the International Champions Cup has grown to become one of the world’s premier pre-season tournaments, bringing the game’s biggest clubs together in cities across Australia, China, Europe and North America. Singapore makes its debut as a host in 2017. Three giants of European football will battle for glory at the inaugural tournament in Singapore—Chelsea FC, FC Bayern and FC Internazionale. With dozens of domestic and continental trophies between them, including nine UEFA Champions League titles, fans can expect a star-studded showcase of the Beautiful Game every match day. The International Champions Cup Singapore takes place at the National Stadium—the home of football in the Lion City and the centrepiece of the state-of-the-art Singapore Sports Hub. The festivities of the International Champions Cup Singapore extend beyond the pitch with Football in the City. Founded in 1905, the Blues are one of England’s most successful teams and became the first club from London to win the Champions League when they beat Bayern Munich in the 2012 final. The team from Stamford Bridge has also won five Premier League titles (six top-flight titles in total), seven FA Cups, five League Cups, four FA Community Shields, one UEFA Europa League title, two UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups and one UEFA Super Cup in their illustrious history. FC BAYERN Since the club’s foundation in 1900, FC Bayern has won 27 national championships, 18 domestic cups as well as five UEFA Champions League titles, making it the most successful German team in history. FC INTERNAZIONALE Founded in Milan in 1908, FC Internazionale— commonly referred to as Inter—is one of the world’s most successful football clubs. Three-time winners of the European Cup/Champions League, the Nerazzurri are the only Italian team never to have been relegated from the top flight and are among the few sides in the world to have done the treble (domestic league and cup plus the Champions League). Sports Marketing and Management, Nanyang Technological University, [email protected] Abstract Spectatorship of local football matches in Singapore has been on the decline. Football fans are now more likely to watch an English Premier League match on broadcast media than a local football game in the stadium. The purpose of this study is to find out the reasons why English Premier League (EPL) football fans in Singapore watch the EPL and to understand how those reasons can be applied to how local football clubs can attract more spectators to their games. A questionnaire adapted from Sport fans’ motivations: an investigation of Romanian soccer supporters (Izzo et al, 2011) was administered to 53 respondents who are fans of the English Premier League. The majority of the respondents were between 18 to 25 years of age (88.7%) and of male gender (81.1%). The results show that respondents watch football for Entertainment (Mean =4.42, SD=0.56), the Physical Skills of the players (Mean =4.38, SD=0.75), a sense of Vicarious Achievement (Mean =4.31, SD=0.79) and to a lesser extent for Escape (Mean =3.87, SD=0.92). More importantly, the findings show that spectators who are highly involved in Sport are more likely to watch English Premier League because it provides a sense of Escape (Mean High Involvement = 4.17, Mean Low Involvement = 3.11; t(51) = 4.39, p<0.01) and Entertainment (Mean High Involvement = 4.59, Mean Low Involvement = 4.00; t(51) = 3.85, p<0.01).
