Traill WALTER OF CHATILLON'S PROSIMETRON IN DOMINO CONFIDO (W.3): WHERE AND WHEN WAS IT PERFORMED?* INTRODUCTION Waiter of Chätillon was one of the most gifted Latin poets of the Middle Ages. His epic poem Alexandreis is his best-known work but he is almost equally well known as the author of some of the best satirical verse in Medieval Latin. Despite his fame, however, little is known about his life. We have to depend for the most part on a number of brief biographical sketches or vitae, whose unreliability is signaled by the mutually contradictory information they provide'. A brief synopsis based on that ev- idence follows. Waiter was born in or near Lilie and received an excellent education at Orleans (or Reims) and Paris. He seems to have taught at Laon and later at Chäril- lon-sur-Marne, not far from Reims. He went to Bologna to study law and in 1176, when William of the White Hands, brother-in-law of Louis VII, was appointed arch- bishop of Reims, WaIter was drawn into his literary circle and it was to William that Waiter dedicated his Alexandreis. He was made a canon of Amiens (or Beauvais or Or- leans) and he mayor may not have died of leprosy. -

Then Becket received a second blow, but still he managed to stand. At the third blow he fell. He said, “For the name of Jesus and the protection of his Church I am prepared to die”. Then the third knight struck Becket so hard that his sword broke. The top was cut off the archbishop’s head so that blood stained the cathedral floor. Troubadour Poetry: An Intercultural Experience By Said I. Abdelwahed Professor of English Literature English Department Faculty of Arts, Al-Azhar University Gaza - Palestine ABSTRACT: This is a reading of the intercultural experience of the medieval poetry known as the Troubadour poetry. It’s a study of the origin, meaning, music and structure of the lyric love poetry which appeared in medieval Spain, in the period from (3rd to 7th centuries A.H / 9th to 13th centuries AD), with special reference to the Muwwashah and the Kharja. It expanded to southern France, then to northern France. The early troubadour was a wondering singer or minstrel who traveled from place to place singing for gaining his living. But the French troubadours were mostly of noble birth that wrote and sang for the upper-class audience. The troubadours wrote their songs and poems of a metrical form mainly on themes of courtly love. Their poetry was influenced by Arabic poetry and it became a literary phenomenon that historians of Western literature and culture could not ignore. This paper highlights the primary role played by the Arabs in medieval poetry issues and it alludes to some salient elements of intercultural communication between the East and the West. INTRODUCTION: Generally speaking, scholars and historians of medieval Arabic literature divided the Arabic and Islamic culture and literature of medieval Spain into three major components. Scholars made divisions of that culture but Gerard Wiegers made the clearest division as follows: I. Works on religion (fiqh, tafsir, prayer books, pious miscellanies, religious polemics magic, popular medicine, and treatises). -

SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND LITERARY DISSENT IN MIDDLE ENGLISH POETRY Medieval English Poetry is not just a mere literary artifact. An in- creasing interest in the social involvement of literature as a human ac- tivity is gradually shown through poetry which reaches its climax in the fourteenth century when it was also believed to be the literary ex- pression of political dissent and social discontent.1 Thus the poet be- comes aware of the social dimensions of his craft which is also a con- sequence of the social engagement of the poet with the historical situ- ation. He tries to reveal, through the poem, his inner feelings and his critical position against injustice and abuse. The quantity and the quality of the poetical output of this period might well have been a reaction to the radical crisis of the time. Po- etry was intended to have a real effect on society with political impli- cations. It expressed the complaints and shaped the expectations of common people in an age of adversity and controversy. In this way poetry became a radical medium of social propaganda. It was the literary answer to social predominance and political incompetence. Protest and political consciousness conformed to a new understanding of medieval poems, which became weapons in the struggle to reverse contemporary social trends and to encourage the projection of dreams 1.- So we find that “poetry was a means of expressing such social discontent.” Cfr. THE CONSTRUCTION OF CHAUCER’S PARDONER Alastair Minnis The corpus of Latin literature on indulgences is vast; much of it has been under-studied, and several of the most significant discussions remain unedited. Albert “the Great” of Cologne, Bonaventure of Bagnorea, Durandus of St. Pourçain, Francesco della Rossa Bartholi, Francis of Meyronnes, John Baconthorpe, John of Dambach, John of Salisbury, Peter Abelard, Peter of Blois, Peter the Chanter, Peter of Poitiers, Peter John Olivi, Peter of la Palud, Peter of Tarantasia, Richard Godmersham, Robert Courson, Senatus of Worcester, Simon of Cremona, Stephen Langton, Thomas Aquinas, Thomas of Chobham, William Lyndwood, William of Auvergne, William of Auxerre....1 Those are just a few among the large number of schol- ars who had important things to say about the theology which under- pinned indulgences, many of the later accounts appearing in commentaries on the fourth book of Peter Lombard’s Sentences (a major locus classicus for relevant discussion). Interest in the topic was international, even as the practice of dispensing indulgences was inter- national. When we seek material on pardons and pardoners in the several national vernaculars, however, an uneven pattern emerges, and some of the pickings are slim. In the Chanson de Roland Bishop Turpin offers Charlemagne’s troops absolution before they battle against the Saracens, so that if they die they will be “holy martyrs,” seated in “highest paradise” (1130–5).2 This statement is illustrative of early thought about how indulgences can ensure safe passage to heaven through martyrdom, and is of interest in relation to the developing theory and practice of crusad- ing indulgences. -

This has led on the one hand to functional approaches that treat the authors as a class subject to sociological analysis, and on the other to approaches that emphasize the fictionality of Minnesang as a form of role- playing in which genre conventions supersede individual contributions. I argue that the men who composed and performed these songs at court were, in fact, using them to create and curate individual profiles for themselves. -

(Voyage of the Liberdade, by Joshua Slocum. Boston, Robinson & Stephenson, 1890. p. 30) Allen, Everett S. Children of the Light: The Rise and Fall of New Bedford Whaling and the Death of the Arctic Fleet. Boston: Little, Brown, 1973. A somewhat elegiac tale of the decline of whaling and New Bedford, contrasted with descriptions of the life of the Inuit, before and after the coming of the whalers to the Beaufort Sea area. Main focus at end is on the disastrous season at Pt. Barrow of the whaling fleet which abandoned over 25 ships, but managed to rescue over 1200 whalemen. p. 89: When a library was donated to New Bedford by the Friends Society in 1813, a committee of members went over the list of books and discarded many, such as several foremost English poets and Shakespeare's works, as unfit for young people to read. This opposition to certain aspects of culture and the arts, implemented by the influential Quaker leadership, was dominant in the New Bedford area for many years. -

Middle English Lyrics: Lyric Manuscripts 1200–1400 and Chaucer’s Lyric by Emma Kate Charters Gorst A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Emma Kate Charters Gorst 2013 Middle English Lyrics: Lyric Manuscripts 1200–1400 and Chaucer’s Lyric Emma Kate Charters Gorst Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This thesis endeavours to understand late medieval lyric poetry and song from two ostensibly separate contexts: insular manuscript witnesses of English lyric from 1200 to 1400; and the narrative effects of lyric in Geoffrey Chaucer’s longer poetry, including the Canterbury Tales, the Parliament of Fowls, and the Book of the Duchess. These two contexts yield new insights about the medieval lyric. First, an overview of the manuscripts of medieval lyric from 1200 to 1400 in England suggests that about half of anonymous lyrics in this period exist in multiple witnesses and are thus in some sense connected, providing us with the insight that lyric at this time was not so much fragmentary as embedded in rich networks of meaning. The first chapter of the thesis uses network mapping software to represent some of these networks, and discusses the relationships among lyrics that appear in Maidstone, Maidstone Museum MS A.13 and related manuscripts, such as Oxford, Jesus College MS 29, and Cambridge, Emmanuel College MS 27. ii Subsequent chapters of the thesis draw out connections between lyrics and narrative events in Chaucer’s poetry, showing in a very different sense that lyric as a literary form reaches outward from the speaker to the narrative world itself, inviting narrative events to take place. -

The argument focuses on the development of the songbook as a concrete, communal object that establishes a system of values for the reception of medieval lyric, including rhetorical, bibliographical, and phenomenological horizons. Moreover, this comparative study examines the role of songbooks in poetic attribution, canon formation and the concept of courtliness amidst the assimilation of new historical realities and material -
