BENEFICE MAGAZINE – January 2018 Edition for the Parishes of Herriard with Winslade, Tunworth, Upton Grey and Weston Patrick

Letter from the Benefice Ministry Team

As the setting of an epic nine hour peal of bells to greet the New Year, in which her fictional detective Lord Peter Wimsey takes part, Dorothy L Sayers for her novel “The Nine Tailors” dreams up the church of Fenchurch St Paul and provides it with a noble tower housing a heavy, melodious ring of eight bells. Round the walls of the ringing chamber run words from psalm 19 “They have neither speech nor language but their voices are heard among them, their sound is gone forth into all lands.” The psalmist knew nothing of church bells; in the psalm he is bowled over by the way the sun peeps cheekily over the horizon in the east, fills the day with its light and warmth and then sinks, retiring like the bridegroom to his bedchamber in the west. All of this reverberates with the glory of God and the psalmist uses the language of sound rather than of sight – the wonder that he sees touches him at the core of his being just as a powerful sound sometimes seems to penetrate you. So for Miss Sayers at least the sound of bells spoke as powerfully of God as the wonder of the heavens. The bells do this because of how they are and where they are. Church bells sound as they do because they have a special shape which has evolved over the centuries. Also, they are in tune; a bell is in tune with itself and with the other bells in the ring of which it is a part. A bell speaks about God because it hangs in God’s place, a Church; his house. For a bell ringer (like me) one of the most important things in any piece of ringing are the intervals between the striking of each bell; without those spaces which give each bell room to ‘breath’ you have a clashing discord devoid of rhythm. To make New Year resolutions we need to take a breathing space to see which things we need to get closer too or further away from; what old things should be given up what new things should be taken on. Perhaps to ask what shapes our lives, how much we are in tune with ourselves and with those around us – where we have decided to put our lives, what we have given them to and what message that gives out. 2

Psalm 19 opens with the declaration that “The heavens declare the glory of God;” all are welcome to share the psalmist’s experience of wonder. As for the bells “their sound has gone forth into all the lands,” to all. Likewise the love of God shining out and broadcast to the world in Jesus is offered to all. That love invites us to let him help us to shape our lives, to live in tune with his purpose for us and to place ourselves in his hands so that our lives ring true. His offer of new life comes to us not just on New Year’s Day but every day. Happy New Year!

CHURCH NEWS

A Christmas Thank-you I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in the many Christmas services and events in Herriard, Upton Grey, Weston Patrick and Tunworth. Over the Christmas period we hosted an Advent Carol service, 2 Christingle services, 3 Carol services, a Crib service, a midnight communion, and 4 Christmas day celebrations. And so to all of the volunteers who lit candles, decorated churches, served mulled wine and mince pies, read lessons, sang in choirs, and cleaned our churches – Thank You. We couldn’t have done it without you. Also, to everyone, whether you are a regular worshipper or an occasional guest, my prayer is that as you’ve taken part in these services and heard again the story of the incarnation, you have experienced afresh the deep and transforming love of God demonstrated in Jesus Christ.

Rev Simon Butler

Snowflakes All snowflakes contain six sides or points owing to the way in which they form. The molecules in ice crystals join to one another in a 6 hexagonal structure, an arrangement which allows water molecules - each with one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms - to form together in the most efficient way. Snow, like the ice particles it’s made up of, is actually colourless. It’s translucent, which means that light does not pass through it easily but is reflected. It’s the light reflected off a snowflake’s faceted surface that creates its white appearance.

The largest snowball fight on record took place in Seattle. Exactly 5,834 snow fighters came together to exchange frozen barrages to create the largest snowball fight in the world on January 12, 2013. Each winter in the U.S., at least 1 septillion ice crystals fall from the sky. That’s 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000—24 zeros!

How to make a paper snowflake 1. Fold the paper in half diagonally to make a triangle. 2. Now, fold the triangle in half so the pointy corners meet. 3. Fold your triangle in thirds. ... 4. Cut across the bottom of your paper so it is straight.

5. Cut your folded paper so it looks like the triangle above. Then unfold it gently. 7

FROM THE VILLAGES

Local Police Report

“Dear Residents, May I first take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Happy New Year. In the coming months I will bring to you the reported crime statistics for your parish and those covered by this magazine. Sadly 2017 saw an increase in reported crime across the whole beat area, of course it is essential that if you are a victim of any crime that you report it. However, I am pleased to report that at the time of writing (12th December) we have had only a few new crimes reported.

I ask as we enter the New Year that residents continue to protect their property using good locks, alarms and CCTV, to record serial numbers 8 and add a photograph of valuable items and garden equipment and please continue to report any suspicious vehicles, people or incidents either to 101 or me direct. Many thanks for your continued support during 2017, it really makes a great difference and allows me to help to provide you with as good a service as I can accepting the considerable increase in area that I now cover.

Sincere best wishes, Andrew REID”, Local Rural Beat Constable PC 3746, Police Office, . Tel: 01256 389050; Mobile: 07768 776844; email:[email protected]

2018 Dates for your diary:

RNLI Concert - Good Old-fashioned Sing-Along 3rd March 2018 Advance warning from Dave and Cas Peace about a new type of concert planned for the 3rd of March 2018.

Cas and Dave are founder members of a shanty group based in the area. They, like many in our area, are members of the RNLI, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, and love messing around on the water in all its different guises. To quote Dave, “you never know when a little help will come in handy”. The shanty group sings at various events specifically to raise money for the RNLI to support their sterling work.

The group are putting together a night of sing-along shanties, folks songs and assorted songs of the sea to raise money for the RNLI and have a good old-fashioned sing-along together. They have so far managed to encourage several well-known local singers to come along and join the Shanty group for the concert. It will be a great mixture of different songs & music to enjoy.

The concert will take place on Saturday 3rd March starting at 7.30 pm in the village hall. Seating will be informal and there are plans to have a pay bar as well.

So please put the date in your diaries and there will be further notices about the concert in due course.

UPTON GREY SHOP. USE IT OR LOSE IT! We’ve lost the Post Office, please save the shop! Apart from its convenience, the Upton Grey shop enhances community life and even house prices. But nowadays takings there are down and we face losing it. Please help support our village community by shopping there as much as you can. Not just when you run out at the last minute. Fresh goods come in on Wednesdays onwards but there is always a new supply of bread, milk, basics and dry goods, wine etc at surprisingly reasonable prices. The variety in the shop is amazing, from birthday cards to Newlyn’s sausages to local honey, cheeses, and, of course, a huge stock of practical items like stationery and cleaning products. Why not buy local? It’s in your own interests. You know it makes sense. The shop is open 7am-7pm.

HERRIARD AND WINSLADE NEWS www.herriard-pc.gov.uk https://www.facebook.com/herriardexservicesclub

Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2017: Terrific Result! We are delighted that the local collection for Herriard, Tunworth and Lasham raised £2,020.60 in November 2017. There were 15 collection tins and the collection at the Remembrance Service at St Marys Church Herriard, where the local Royal British Legion Branch colour party paraded and presented their colours at the traditional and moving service. Of the collection tins 7 were kindly kept on premises including the RBL Hall, Fur and Feathers PH Herriard, Avenue Nurseries, Royal Oak PH Lasham, Lasham Gliding Society, 2 Excel Engineering at Lasham Airfield and AVS Fencing; and 8 were taken around parts of the villages by individuals. Many thanks to Neil Smith who coordinates and organises things, and everyone involved who asked people for donations and took tins around their local area. If anyone would like to support this and help next year please contact Neil on [email protected].

Herriard & Lasham with Bentworth WI The meeting on Thursday 2nd November 2017 was held at the Royal British Legion Hall, Herriard. The speaker was Mr Bishop, an Entertainments Officer with the Merchant Navy with the topic of “Life at Sea – What it is really like living and working on a Cruise Ship”. Mr Bishop joined his first cruise ship aged nineteen and has progressed as a Entertainment Officer from a 'small' ship, The Aurora, with 800 passengers to the Queen Mary II with several thousand on board. Mr Bishop’s job involves all aspects of the ship's entertainment from quizzes, games, dances to shows and late night cabaret. His typical day starts early morning (after a quick breakfast and ends after midnight when the cabaret finishes). As well as being one of the principal singers, his duties also include answering the passengers questions and handling any complaints Some of the questions asked must make it difficult for him to keep a straight face – a couple of examples being: “Do the crew sleep on board?”, “Does the ship generate its own electricity?”. We were asked to guess examples of the quantity of provisions required for the week long trip to New York and back on the Queen Mary II - 90,000 eggs, 8,000 bottles of champagne and 31,00 bottles of beer, Needless to 12 say our estimates were way out! Also the costs involved in docking fees – New York charges £100,00 per day! We heard of all the wonderful sights and countries he had visited around the world – Norway his favourite destination and Russia, with its 'red tape' the worst. A tour of duty for Mr Bishop lasts four months, then he has 4 months ashore and we heard how during these months he organises a choir in his village and so successful has it been, they will be appearing in the New Year on Channel 5's programme 'Jane & Friends' – Hosted by Jane MacDonald, who found fame on television in a documentary series of her life as an entertainer on board ship! For a suitable finale to what was a very relaxed, amusing and fascinating insight to his life at sea, Mr Bishop treated us to a couple of songs from 'My Fair Lady' and 'Les Misérables'. He was warmly thanked and joined our members for refreshments at the end of a very pleasant afternoon. Thursday December 7th was our Christmas Lunch. On Friday 8th December we were invited along with our fellow Alton Group members to a Christmas celebration at Shalden Church, hosted by Shalden WI. A report in the next magazine. Jean Clarke.

Alton Community Care Alton Community Care provides transport for people from Alton and its surrounding villages who need to get to medical appointments. With the deterioration of public transport our service is a lifeline for patients who would otherwise find great difficulty in keeping the appointments which may be so vital for their health. To keep this essential service going we need more volunteers. We need both coordinators and drivers. Coordinators do 2 or 3 days at a time, from their own homes. With a team of 8, this means one or two duties a month and we can be very flexible. Drivers can do as few or as many journeys as they wish, taking people from their own homes to local surgeries, the Community Hospital or hospitals further afield – mainly Basingstoke. COULD YOU HELP? For more information, please phone either: Peter Bacon – 01420 85910 or Hugh Bethell – 01420 563932

Odiham & Old Basing Health Centres You will have read some of the horror stories about surgeries in different parts of the country offering very long waiting times for appointments or, in some places closing altogether. We are very fortunate in this rural area to have surgeries that continue to provide an excellent service despite an increasing patient list as more people come to live here. You may be interested in an updated list of the professionals who work at our Health centres. We have seven permanent GPs:

Dr Assadourian Dr Bates Dr Andrews Dr Williams Dr Heywood Dr Zaki Dr Pizzotti

Following Dr Shand’s retirement we also are using locums. We are also joined by registrars and trainees who join us as a part of their training

Odiham & Old Basing Health Centres: Patient Participation Group As we grow older and develop more and more adverse medical conditions our kind doctors and consultants give us more tablets to help overcome our ailments or cope with pain. Taken on their own to treat a specific condition they can work very well but research has shown that 50% of older people are taking a multitude of tablets for lots of different conditions and the problem is that, sometimes, these medicines can work against each other and make us feel worse rather than better.

So if you are taking five or more different tablets per day and are not feeling particularly well then ask the pharmacist to check that they are all working well together. If, at any time you are prescribed additional tablets and don’t feel better after taking them tell your doctor who can often prescribe an alternative.
