She deserves to be celebrated every single day but more so on a day specially dedicated to express love and gratitude towards women’s’ contribution to our Alives and society. While International Women’s Day commemorates the inspiring role of women around the world, at The Yoga Institute, we take the opportunity to honour women who are at the forefront of yogic society and our Institute - Smt. Sitadevi Yogendra, fondly known as Mother, and Pujya Maa, Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra. Mother married Shri Yogendraji, Founder of The Yoga Institute, in 1927 and joined him in his mission of spreading the knowledge of Yoga worldwide, especially to women. Authored by Mother, 'Yoga Physical Education for Women' has been hailed the world over as the first authoritative book on Yoga for women written by a woman. She was instrumental in opening up the world of Yoga to women. Smt. Hansaji’s life is an epitome of Yoga. She has brought about key revolutionary changes in the field of Yoga by spreading Yoga education especially for women. This led to special classes for women, Pregnancy, Menopause, Antenatal and Postnatal camps to name a few. She learnt and taught Yoga at the time when women were not considered a part of the Yoga fraternity. Renowned as the First Lady of Yoga, she is well-known for her oratory skills and popular amongst the national and international Yoga fraternity. The Yoga Institute celebrates the great success of every woman around the world, across all spheres of life. With the exam season around, students are crumbling under pressure for not being able to remember, loss of sleep and energy, lack of concentration and nightmares related to the exams. To reduce their burden, let us encourage children to be more energetic through proper food, physical exercise. With practice of yoga and meditation, along with creative activities, children are able cope with exam stress and perform better. More conscious power to women and good luck to all the students! Why should I practice Yoga? women - For happiness A: Usually the awareness that ‘I should take care of myself and maintain my balance’, ‘I should remain healthy’ is missing in women because they want to take care of everybody. Taking care is not such a big thing, but 2. If I am angry, what should I do at that time to calm myself ? they want to make everybody happy around them, and that is not possible - Mauna as people become happy or not happy according to their nature. So women tend to overdo things. 3. How should I be less fearful? Women are working. Even in the house or if they go out, they are - Increase faith working 24 hours. Accepting whatever the result is has to - Growth, staying together become a philosophy of life. Do your job to the best of your capacity; you have right over your work but no right over the result. 8. What is religion? She has to become more philosophical, more accepting of herself. We all - Helping humanity make mistakes; learn from your mistakes and organise yourself so that the same mistakes don't occur again. Feeling guilty and bad should not be 9. Life is... done; uplifting yourself and respecting yourself should be the approach. - Beautiful Q: We see many women who are very compassionate, and this 10.One piece of advice to all women? compassion becomes a cause of their pain. What is your advice to - Remember your own strength, remember that you have all the such women? capacity and you can do it. A: We are supposed to do our duty - "dharma" - in life, and we have to do so many duties. The hierarchy of duties is very clear; taking out time for yourself is your first duty. Maintaining your own balance and your health is your first duty. Duty towards near and dear ones, work, society, nation, humanity - all these are the duties. Now when you get carried away emotionally, you want to help others or indulge in certain areas where some mistake is happening. We should know that we are not Gods to make other people happy or to run the world with our own emotion. We can only do our bit, and if we overdo any area, other areas would suffer. Use your intelligence, your “Buddhi " so that you organise and get things done.

A horse racing accident in 1985 left her with numerous broKen bones in her leg, anKle and foot. With the help of Iyengar yoga, she feels she was better equipped to deal with the 28 years of chronic pain that eventually led her to a Total AnKle Replacement in 2013. Ruth says: “My attraction to yoga started at a young age when I spotted one of those ‘pocKet booKs’ sold at the grocery store checKout lines. At the time, the booK cost maybe 25 cents and the photo on the front was a woman standing on her head. I convinced my mother to buy it for me and that is what started my yoga practice. It was the greatest gift she gave me, just as it is said that the inverted poses are the greatest gift to humanity.” In addition to her travels to India to study with the Iyengar family, she continues her studies with Colleen Gallagher, Mary Reilly and Manouso Manos.

A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS A Dissertation Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By Robin A. Lowry August, 2011 Examining Committee Members: Ricky Swalm, Advisory Chair, Kinesiology Michael Sachs, Kinesiology Catherine Schifter, Education Jay Segal, Public Health ii © Copyright By Robin A. Lowry 2011 All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS By Robin A. Lowry Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2011 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Ricky Swalm, Ph. D. Introduction: Yoga is increasingly recommended for the K-12 population as a health intervention, a Physical Education activity, and for fun. What constitutes Yoga however, what is taught, and how it is taught, is variable. The purpose of this study was to survey Youth Yoga curriculums to identify content, teaching strategies, and assessments; dimensions of wellness addressed; whether national Health and Physical Education (HPE) standards were met; strategies to manage implementation fidelity; and shared constructs between Yoga and educational psychology. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design included a preliminary survey (n = 206) and interview (n = 1), questionnaires for curriculum developers (n = 9) and teachers (n = 5), interviews of developers and teachers (n = 3), lesson observations (n= 3), and a review of curriculum manuals. Results: Yoga content was adapted from elements associated with the Yoga Sutras but mostly from modern texts, interpretations, and personal experiences. Curriculums were not consistently mapped, nor elements defined. Non-Yoga content included games, music, and storytelling, which were used to teach Yoga postures and improve concentration, balance, and meta-cognitive skills.

The formal techniques that are now known as Yoga are, therefore, based on the collective experiences of many individuals over many thousands of years. The particular manner in which the techniques are taught and practiced today depends on the approach passed down in the line of teachers supporting the individual practitioner. Yoga is essentially a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science, which focuses on establishing harmony between mind, body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature and a holistic approach to health and well- being. Yoga is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with ourselves, the world and Nature. It is an art and science for healthy living.
