Vol. 52 Issue No. 2620 www.antiqueweek.com December 9, 2019 Childhood form of transportation now a hot commodity By Doug Graves

Bicycles are a favorite under the Christmas tree. While many children grow up and forget their childhood mode of transportation; others decide they need to buy back that part of their past. The precursor to the modern-day was the 1817 Draisine, named for its German inventor, Karl von Drais. This two-wheeled machine lacked pedals so cyclists had to push it along with their feet. It was quite popular in 19th-century Europe and the U.S. Around 1863, the wood-and-iron , or “boneshaker” appeared in England and France. This was considered the first true bicycle, with pedals attached to the front wheel so riders could propel themselves up hills. The only way for engineers to increase the speed of a bike was to enlarge its front wheel. This led to the development of high-wheel in the latter part of the 19th century. “It all started in Great Britain in the 1880s with the first big-wheel and the reason for the big wheel was one word – speed,” said Jim Elking, high-wheel enthusiast and employee at the Bicycle Museum of America in New Bremen, Ohio. “The taller you were the longer your legs, the longer your legs the bigger the wheel, and the bigger the wheel the faster one could go.” High-wheel bikes (also called penny-farthings) were eye-catching and not as diffi- cult to get onto as they looked, but they were next to impossible to stop once they started moving, which often resulted in crashes that would send the rider flying head first over the handlebars. The first big-wheel made the scene in the U.S. in 1890. According to vintage bicy- cle expert Ray Osborne, the vintage bicycles offered comfort as well as speed. “Old roads were in poor condition and the large wheel could roll over the potholes Above: Shown is a very rare Miami Cycle & Mfg. Co. built 1919 Flying Merkel ‘Motorbike’ and small rocks,” Osborne said, “but the big-wheel bike was a relatively short-lived bicycle, unrestored with original paint intact. In mint condition with a small wheel in the front, two large wheels in the back, and a seat it would sell for $2,000. This one sold for $600.
