The Man Who Saved the World is a feature-length film that tells the true, yet nearly unknown story of Stanislav Petrov, the Soviet lieutenant colonel who single-handedly prevented nuclear Armageddon at the height of the Cold War.

The film seamlessly mixes reenactments of the September 26, 1983, incident with Petrov’s current day trip to America to receive long-overdue appreciation for his decision on that fateful night.

With The Man Who Saved the World, director Peter Anthony and producer Jakob Staberg have created a film that is both movingly human and edge-of-your-seat thrilling. It is half documentary, half thriller and wholly compelling.

The Man Who Saved the World was shot over a period of seven years. Fascinated by a small news article about Petrov, Anthony and Staberg set out to find the man whose decision prevented a nuclear holocaust. Accompanied by a film crew, they found Petrov living alone in a ramshackle apartment in Moscow.

Full of hope and heartbreak, Petrov’s captivating tale is ultimately about the courage of one man who chose intuition over indoctrination—and saved the world in the process.

After studying Petrov’s story, Kevin Costner connects with Petrov. deems Petrov “the man who saved the world”—a real-life hero. Other stars appearing in the film include , Matt Damon, and Ashton Kutcher.

Run time: 109 minutes THE INCIDENT

For one night in 1983, the fate of the world rested squarely on the shoulders of one man. Stanislav Petrov, a lieutenant colonel in the Soviet army, was filling in for another soldier on the night their satellite warning system erroneously indicated that five nuclear missiles had been fired from the at the .

Ordered to always follow protocol, Petrov was supposed to fire an immediate, retaliatory strike against the United States. But, because he followed his instinct, World War III—the instant death of 200 million Americans and the destruction of Earth as we knew it—was averted.

THE MAN

Despite saving our world, Stanislav Petrov’s world collapsed around him.

Rather than receiving a hero’s reward for his actions, Petrov was demoted to a lesser military role for ignoring protocol. Because the incident revealed imperfections in Soviet missile technology, the entire incident was hushed-up and largely forgotten—until now.

Today Petrov, the antihero, lives a lonely, solitarily life, marred by his struggle with alcoholism, and the burden of knowing how close we came to nuclear holocaust.

Despite recent recognition he has received for his actions on September 26, 1983, Petrov does not consider himself a hero. He was “just in the right place at the right time.”

People are often remembered for what they do. Petrov will be remembered for what he had the courage not to do. GET STARTED
