Acknowledgements This book is the culmination of research, feedback and thought- provoking discussions I have had with scientists, fellow researchers, doctors and patients. Many of whom are mentioned throughout this book, though many more have chosen to remain anonymous. I have several people to thank especially whose continuous guidance and support these past seven years has helped keep me focused.

Firstly, my family, especially my wife Dr. Shakuntala for her undying support. Mr. Edmund Ponniah, who knowing of my interest in herbs first drew my attention to Lingzhi and was instrumental in my embarking on this study.

Dr. Kumar Pati, whose friendship I will always treasure and his popular magazine Health World, which first carried my earlier work on Lingzhi and other medicinal mushrooms.

A special thanks to my dear friend, Mr. J. L. Anthony whose tirelessly work into the wee hours of the morning saw the compilation of the research into an initial draft. My brother, Navin who has done an excellent job of editing the book into its current form. And to Mantra Communication, for their fabulous concept and design work on both editions of this book.

Last but definitely not least, to mycologist Prof. R. G. Kapooria of the Dept. of Biology, University of Zambia for his support, and having graciously consented to writing the forward for the first edition of this book in spite of his busy schedule and to Dr. Teow Sun Soo; whose discussion on Lingzhi over lunch for the past eight odd years has always been stimulating and informative.

Seremban, January 2002 Born in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan in 1948, Dr Clarence S Stanislaus is a medical doctor by profession. Graduating in 1974, he has been in private practice for the last twenty odd year. He has been on the panel of a number of companies, and has acted as Medical Consultant. Dr. Clarence has been actively involved in the study of mushrooms since 1992. The author of several articles on the usage of Ling Zhi and other mushrooms, he was a council member of the world Society of Mushroom Biology and Mushroom Products. He has been a participant at various symposiums and conferences among them, the 5th International Mycological Congress in Vancouver, 1994; the 2nd International Symposium on Ganoderma Research in Beijing, 1994; the 2nd International Conference in Ganoderma Mushroom Biology and Mushroom Products at University Park, Pennsylvania 1996. This book is an update of the book originally published in 1999. It contains confirmations of theories first put forth in the original, which have since been proven by various studies worldwide. It also examines several areas that the previous edition had not been able to cover.
