“That's Gold, Jerry, Gold!” the Sophisticated Contradiction at The “That’s Gold, Jerry, Gold!” The Sophisticated Contradiction at the Heart of Stand-Up Comedy by George Joshua Henry A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2016 © George Joshua Henry 2016 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This dissertation examines the word “sophisticated” by re-situating it within the Greek tradition and explicating how such a move informs a study of humor and amusement. In regard to “techniques and theories,” the OED suggests the word sophisticated can be used to mean “highly developed” and “employing advanced or refined methods,” but also “not plain, honest, or straightforward,” and “containing alterations intended to deceive.” In other words, as a discourse descriptor, “sophisticated” can be taken complimentarily to mean complex, intricate, and worldly-wise, but also disparagingly to mean deceptive, misleading, and superficially-wise. The opposition between these meanings illustrates the central idea of this study—that what lies at the heart of both sophistic rhetoric and amusement is contradiction: a state of tension in which “incompatible things” are held together “because both or all are necessary and true” (Haraway). In the context of contemporary North American stand-up comedy, this dissertation links sophistic rhetoric and humor theory such that they mutually support each other, gain meaning, and become more approachable. Defined as an orientation to contradiction, sophistic rhetoric provides a way to theorize humor, while the universal phenomenon of amusement provides justification for theorizing a thing called “sophistic rhetoric.” iii Acknowledgments First and foremost, deep gratitude to my supervisor, Jay Dolmage. Of his indispensable patience and dedication—I can’t say enough. Thanks to Frankie Condon for her willingness to join the committee late and contribute straight away. Thanks to Andy McMurry for the kind words and encouragement. Thanks to our Chair. Thanks to the Department of English Language and Literature for providing an environment in which to thrive. The commitment to the study of rhetoric found there made this project possible and for that I consider myself very lucky. Thanks to Gerald Butler for teaching me about humor. Thanks to Larry McCaffery for wishing me well. Thanks to William Nericcio and Peter Herman for going out of their way to help me get to the next step. Thanks to Rosalie de Rosset for launching me in this direction many years ago. And a big thanks to all the family members who cared about us and sent us money— we are very thankful. Finally, thanks to my wife, Nicole, for everything. iv Dedication To my father, who taught me a sense of humor, and to my kids, for whom I hope to do the same. v Table of Contents Author’s Declaration one of the most powerful if least investigated forms of postmodernist expression. – John Limon Stand-up comedy is arguably the oldest, most universal, basic, and deeply significant form of humorous expression. It is the purest public comic communication, performing essentially the same social and cultural roles in practically every known society, past and present. – Lawrence Mintz On stage, Jerry Seinfeld ponders the results of a study that found public speaking to be more feared than death. It means, he observes, that the average person, if attending a funeral, would prefer to be in the casket rather than giving the eulogy. Robert Stebbins points out that the term “stand-up”

  • 2017 CFAC Donation Letter and Form.Pdf
Dear Friend: Please help us beat last year’s fundraising record by donating to our 5th Annual 2017 Comedy For A Cause Auction and Benefit Show for PS11 The William T Harris Elementary School, located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. PS 11 is a wonderfully diverse school with a large percentage of the population qualifying for “free lunch”. The Department of Education provides the basics, but it’s up to the community to provide everything else. The PS11 PTA has made it their mission to make up for this shortfall and more with innovative fundraisers like Comedy For A Cause. Over the past four years, our comedy benefit has raised enough money to enable the PTA to pay for all the school supplies for over 900 students, enrichment programs in the arts (Rioult dance, Rosie's Theater Kids, Julliard Music, Circle in the Square playwriting, etc.), additional teachers to help reduce class size, math and literacy consultants, teacher development and so much more. PS11 was chosen by the New York City Schools Chancellor as a Model School to partner up with two other elementary schools to show them how they can improve practices. Each year, our comedy benefit sells out in a matter of hours. We’ve featured top national talent including Gilbert Gottfried, John Oliver, Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Gaffigan, Jim Norton, Colin Quinn, Susie Essman, Michael Che, Dave Attell, Artie Lange, Judy Gold, Donnell Rawlings and many more. This year’s event will be held at Gotham Comedy Club in NYC on Tuesday, February 7, 2017.

E.1 Abstract (Summary) "Tourgasm" was a conspicuously slight and infomercial-like ad to boost [Cook]'s rabid popularity among college-age fans; the rest was filler, Cook and his three comedian underlings in various states of homoerotic, roughhousing repose. It seemed more than a little symbolic, in fact, that Cook was blowing up last year while Mitch Hedberg, a comedian whose following mirrored Cook's (Internet fan base, transcendent rock-star aura), died of a drug overdose in a New Jersey motel. Onstage, Hedberg cut an odd Kurt Cobain-like figure -- tall, skinny, beatnik clothes, hair over his eyes. He talked in idiosyncratic, absurdist mumbles ("I tried to walk into a Target, but I missed"; "I don't own a microwave, but I do have a clock that occasionally cooks [things]") and was afraid to lock eyes with the audience. He feared the very thing at which Cook excels -- tearing down the wall between the audience and himselfbut he loved that which Cook doesn't: the economy, the importance, of words. • Pork Filled Productions, While Still Retaining Their Sketch Comedy Work Under the Pork Filled Players Name
PoprPoodrkrkuc Fitionlleds Asian American Theatre Pork Filled History The Pork Filled Players burst onto the Seattle scene in 1998, blending com- munity activism with theatrical passion. Founded by Wally Glenn, David Kobayashi, Roger Tang, and Ellen Williams (who later found TV sitcom stardom on such shows as How I Met Your Mother), the Players focused their efforts toward a (then) rarely seen medium in Asian American theater: Asian American comedy. The Players established a unique voice in the Seattle Asian American community, becoming artists in resi- dence at the Northwest Asian American Theatre, and writing and producing late night sketch comedy shows. They also spread into the wider sketch comedy commu- nity, as peers of such fabled groups as Mike Daisey’s Up In You Grill, Bald Faced Lie, and The Habit. They were charter performers at the first Seattle SketchFest, the nation’s longest-running sketch comedy festival, and hold the current record for the most return appearanc- es in the festival. During this time, they also toured throughout the Pacific Northwest, appearing in festivals such as Bumbershoot, the Seattle Fringe Festival, and Vancouver BC’s SketchOff@%#?, the first International Asian Canadian/American sketch comedy competition. Seeking new horizons to conquer, in 2007, the Players staged their first full-length play and went on to produce several more, including the Northwest premiere of Yellow Face, a timely farce of mistaken racial identity by Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang. Meanwhile, they still maintained their presence as Seattle’s longest-running sketch comedy group with regular full-length sketch comedy shows and hosting Spam*O*Rama, a comedy & music cabaret.

  • Netflix's Big Mouth
Netflix’s Big Mouth Big Mouth = Big Topics The first season of Netflix’s new animated show Big Mouth debuted on September 29, 2017 and is very popular among teens and young adults. Boasting an all-star cast and a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the cartoon is about middle schoolers going through puberty in the most explicit, perverse, and, at times, depraved way possible. Puberty is indeed a difficult time for all of us, and while the show does bring some good to the discussion, it’s also fraught with problems. What do I need to know about Big Mouth? It’s an adult cartoon based on the real-life experiences that comic writers Nick Kroll and An- drew Goldberg had as kids growing up in New York. They share, in graphic detail, what it was like growing up and going through puberty. As most young men do, Nick and Andrew strug- gled through lust, sexuality, relationships with girls, and the ups and downs of friendship. The show features some of the most popular comedians of our time as the voices, including: John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, and Jordan Peele. Although the show is about pre-teens, it is intended for an adult audience. However, Netflix does not effectively limit younger viewers’ access, and undoubtedly, there will be many teens and pre-teens who watch the show. Many of them have lots of questions about sex, and they will be drawn to the show in hopes of finding answers. Unfortunately, due to the content, they are likely to develop some severely warped ideas from watching it.
