SSM Faculty

Christine Borland is visual artist working mainly 3-dimensionally, on themes relating to science and medicine. She exhibits widely both locally and internationally and has worked on several large-scale projects which have been realised in public spaces, most recently a sculpture commission ‘To Be Set and Sown in the Garden’ outside the Hunterian Gallery, Glasgow University. 6 monographs have been published on her work. She is a Research Fellow at of Art, working with students who are interested the relationships between Art & Science.

Marek H. Dominiczak is Consultant Biochemist clinically involved in cardiovascular prevention and parenteral nutrition services, and Director of the Medical Humanities Unit at Gartnavel General Hospital. Barbara McEwan Gulliver is Founder and Director of Art in Hospital Glasgow.

Kathy McFall is Medical Illustration Manager at Gartnavel General Hospital .She is also Editor of the Journal of Visual Communication in Medicine. Kathy lectures on behalf of the Medical Humanities Unit at the University of Glasgow, and has tutored students undertaking the BSc in Medical Illustration at Glasgow Caledonian University. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI), and sits on the Board of Directors of the Health and Science Communications Association (HeSCA).

Colin Hall is Maintenance Supervisor at Gartnavel General Hospital.

Pauline Muir is Scottish Artist who has been actively involved in the Arts since graduating from in 1993. Lectures Ceramic Art in the Environment at Glasgow Metropolitan College and is also engaged in the design and fabrication of site-specifi c sculptural or architectural art features.

Maureen Park is Lecturer in Visual Arts in the Department of Adult and Continuing Education, University of Glasgow. A graduate of History of Art and History from Glasgow, she was Assistant Keeper of Fine Art in Glasgow Art Gallery and Curator of Haggs Castle Museum. In autumn 1999, with her husband Dr Richard Park, she curated an exhibition at the Hunterian Museum, The Fine Art of Medicine, funded by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. She has lectured and published widely on the links between fi ne art and medicine. In 2007 she completed her PhD thesis, ‘Art in Madness: Dr W. A. F. Browne, Moral Treatment and Patient Art at Crichton Royal Institution, Dumfries, 1839-1857’.

Assessments. Final assessment will be based on

• an approx. 2500 words essay on a chosen topic • a 10-minute Powerpoint presentation related to the essay. • Artwork and Supervisors’ Assessment SSM 3 Program 3

Week one: The language: reading the pictures

Learning objectives:

• Identify the different styles of painting from Renaissance to the present. • Use art history terminology relating to the development of painting from the Renaissance to the present. • Understand how paintings are infl uenced by social, political, economic and educational factors.

• Discuss the use of images in a medical environment. • Relate visual art to architecture. Learning objectives (weeks 3 &4):

• Refl ect on the role of Art in Hospital in healthcare. • Plan a site-specifi c artwork that will enhance a particular environment. (This will be a given space and the artwork can be a maquette for a large-scale piece). The artwork will have relevance to the intention of “The Client” and will harmonize with the space.
