Moron, Liar Or GOP Sock Puppet? | Huffpost Tucker: Moron, Liar or GOP Sock Puppet? | HuffPost US EDITION THE BLOG Tucker: Moron, Liar or GOP Sock Puppet? By Marty Kaplan 10/20/2005 11:48 pm ET | Updated May 25, 2011 A breathtakingly satisfying evisceration: Minutes after David Johnston’s New York Times story about the perjury, obstruction of justice and false statment charges that Patrick Fitzgerald is likely to bring against Karl Rove and Scooter Libby hit the Web, Tucker Carlson went ballistic. How dare Fitzgerald leak this stuff? Carlson demanded that his guest Larry O’Donnell share his outrage about Fitzgerald’s alleged indiscretion. But the story repeatedly and explicitly sources the information to lawyers involved in the case, not to Fitzgerald. When O’Donnell calmly pointed this fact out, and suggested that Rove’s lawyer Bob Luskin was the source, it only enraged Carlson further. What possible good could it do Luskin to leak such a story? he blathered. Well, said Larry, elegantly disemboweling his interlocutor, it gets a Tucker Carlson to say that indicting Rove for lying to FBI agents and a grand jury is no big deal. Tucker didn’t buy that, no siree; that’s way too complicated, Larry, but thanks for being on the show. You gotta wonder: Does Tucker really think that when Johnston wrote words like “lawyers involved in the case said Thursday,” or “the lawyers said,” or “some lawyers in the case said,” that it’s fair game to claim that Johnston really meant the prosecutor? What is that, the MSNBC truth exemption? And did Tucker sleep through the last thirty years of lessons about the coverup being worse than the crime? I wonder if he came up with the idea that anything less than an espionage charge is an affront to the public on his own — or is it just version 2.0 of the pathetic criminilization-of- politics meme that Ken Mehlman & Co are putting out? All rights reserved. How would the course of history been altered had P.T. Barnum moderated the famed Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858? Today’s ultimate showman and on-again, off-again presidential candidate Donald Trump invited the Republican presidential primary contenders to a debate he planned to moderate and broadcast over the Christmas holidays. One of a record 30 such debates and forums held or scheduled between May 2011 and March 2012, this, more than any of the previous debates, had the potential to be an embarrassing debacle. Trump “could do a lot of damage to somebody,” said Karl Rove, the architect of President George W. Bush’s 2000 and 2004 campaigns, in an interview with Greta Van Susteren of Fox News. “And I suspect it’s not going to be to the candidate that he’s leaning towards. This is a man who says himself that he is going to run— potentially run—for the president of the United States starting next May. Why do we have that person moderating a debate?” 1 Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the 2008 Republican nominee for president, also reacted: “I guarantee you, there are too many debates and we have lost the focus on what the candidates’ vision for America is..

Mickey and the Mouse: The Motion Picture and Television Industry's Copyright Concerns on the Internet* Mark S. Torpoco I. INTRODUCTION In early 1996, international chess champion Garry Kasparov played a six game match with an IBM computer, named Deep Blue, specifically designed to play chess and programmed with the knowl- edge of every known chess move, game, and strategy.' Kasparov's hard-won victory was hailed as a victory for human ingenuity over ar- tificial intelligence,2 but the match itself was important for another reason: it highlighted the potential commercial value of the Internet as an entertainment medium. IBM, which sponsored the match, created an Internet site that al- lowed chess enthusiasts to follow the match move by move and to read on-the-scene expert commentary.' IBM was expecting 200,000 people to drop by, but over 6 million people signed on to view the action as it transpired.4 These are Nielsen-size numbers larger than those of many TV shows, and if IBM could have charged admission to view its Inter- . Introduction: Romney’s Dilemma Mitt Romney woke up on the morning of September 11, 2012, with big hopes for this day – that he’d stop the slow slide of his campaign for the presidency. The political conventions were in his rear-view mirror, and the Republican nominee for the White House was trailing President Obama in most major polls. In an ABC News/Washington Post poll released at the start of the week, the former Massachusetts governor’s previous 1-point lead had flipped to a 6-point deficit.1 “Mr. Obama almost certainly had the more successful convention than Mr. Romney,” wrote Nate Silver, the polling guru and then-New York Times blogger.2 While the incumbent’s gathering in Charlotte was marked by party unity and rousing testimonials from Obama’s wife, Michelle, and former President Bill Clinton, Romney’s confab in Tampa had fallen flat.

  • The Last White Election?
mike davis THE LAST WHITE ELECTION? ast september, while Bill Clinton was delighting the 2012 Democratic Convention in Charlotte with his folksy jibe at Mitt Romney for wanting to ‘double up on the trickle down’, a fanatical adherent of Ludwig von Mises, wearing a villainous Lblack cowboy hat and accompanied by a gun-toting bodyguard, captured the national headquarters of the Tea Party movement in Washington, dc. The Jack Palance double in the Stetson was Dick Armey. As House Majority Leader in 1997 he had participated in a botched plot, instigated by Republican Whip Tom DeLay and an obscure Ohio Congressman named John Boehner, to topple House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Now Armey was attempting to wrest total control of FreedomWorks, the organization most responsible for repackaging rank-and-file Republican rage as the ‘Tea Party rebellion’ as well as training and coordinating its activists.1 Tea Party Patriots—a national network with several hundred affiliates—is one of its direct offshoots. As FreedomWorks’ chairperson, Armey symbolized an ideological continuity between the Republican con- gressional landslides of 1994 and 2010, the old ‘Contract with America’ and the new ‘Contract from America’. No one was better credentialed to inflict mortal damage on the myth of conservative solidarity. Only in December did the lurid details of the coup leak to the press. According to the Washington Post, ‘the gun-wielding assistant escorted FreedomWorks’ top two employees off the premises, while Armey sus- pended several others who broke down in sobs at the news.’2 The chief target was Matt Kibbe, the organization’s president and co-author with Armey of the best-selling Give Us Liberty: A Tea Party Manifesto.
