THE LAW ON OPTICAL DISCS I. GENERAL PROVISIONS Subject-matter of the Law Article 1 This Law shall regulate the manufacturing, commercial duplication, circulation and exports of optical discs, and imports and exports of production parts, raw materials and equipment used for manufacturing of optical discs. Definitions Article 2 The terms used in this Law, shall have the following meaning: 1) Optical Disc shall mean any medium or device, other than a production part, on which data in digital form, readable by means of an optical scanning mechanism employing a high-density light source (a laser), has been stored or is capable of being stored, including all the formats, notably: - CD (compact disc) - CD-DA (compact disc digital audio) - CD-I (compact disc – interactive) - CD-P (compact disc – photo) - CD-ROM (compact disc read-only memory) - CD-R (compact disc recordable) - CD-RW (compact disc rewritable) - CD-WO (compact disc write once) - DVD (digital versatile disc) - DVD-RAM (digital versatile disc random access memory) - DVD-ROM (digital versatile disc read-only memory) - LD (laserdisc) - MD (mini-disc) - VCD (video compact disc) - CVD (China video disc) - SVCD (super video compact disc) - SACD (Super audio compact disc) 2) Production Part shall mean any component of a mould (a “stamper”), that embodies data in a digital form and is capable of being used to mould optical discs, or any other device embodying data from which a stamper may be produced by means of an electroplating process; 3) Master disc shall mean a disc made of glass or polymer that contains data in digital form used to produce Production Part (a “stamper”);. -

Numerical Modelling of Near Field Optical Data Storage
ESPOO 2005 VTT PUBLICATIONS 570 VTT PUBLICATIONS 570 In this thesis, two future generation optical data storage techniques are studied using numerical models. Direct semiconductor laser readout (DSLR) system employs external cavity configuration and super resolution (SR) technique an optically nonlinear material layer at the optical disc for Numerical modelling of near field optical data storage recording and readout operation. Work with the DSLR system is focused on the studying and optimisation of the writing performance of the system, while work with the SR system has focused on explaining the physical phenomena responsible for SR readout and writing performance. Both techniques enable the writing and readout of the data marks smaller than the resolution limit of the conventional optical pickup head. Using SR technique 4x increase in the data density in comparison to DVD disk can be obtained. Because the studied structures are in the order of the wavelength, ray tracing and scalar methods cannot be used to model the system. But, the solution of Maxwell's vector equations is required in order to study these structures. Moreover, analytical solutions usually do not exist for such complex structures, thus the numerical methods have to be used. In this thesis the main modelling tool has been the Finite Difference Time Domain method. Kari J. ARTICLE IASA RESEARCH GRANT REPORT: A STUDY ON THE CHANGING PRICES OF AUDIOVISUAL DIGITIZATION, 2006–2015 Rebecca Chandler, AVPreserve, USA Introduction Over the past five years in the United States and Europe there has been a decisive decline in the cost of digitization, resulting in historically low prices. This has been due to a variety of rea- sons, ranging from innovation to marketplace competition. With a shortening window of time in which to act, this economic advantage has been a boon to organizations with holdings of legacy audiovisual media. This is widely recognized and discussed among managers and budget holders within organizations. However, what has not been evaluated effectively is whether or not we are currently in a digitization market bubble. We hypothesize that obsolescence, degradation, and market factors will begin to place the cost of digitization back on an upward trajectory. What we do not know is how the curve will look. Our experience indicates that organizations are unwilling to believe that prices will increase at the same rate that they decreased, or that they will ever again reach even 50% of what they were just five years ago. However, these discussions are often emotionally-driven and take place without a well-laid foundation of data from which to judge. With the support of an IASA Research Grant, we set out to design a project that would begin to amass a shared and computable dataset that can help us ask questions and provide projections about our hypothesis. The goal of this project is to quantify and chart in detail the historical pricing trends for digitization over the past 10–15 years.
