They defeated No. 2 national seed Wake Forest in a 5-4 shootout following a 0-0 draw at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. Stanford is the third team to win the national title while not surrendering a goal in the NCAA tournament (Wisconsin 1995, San Francisco 1976). “For me, it is very, very special,” Stanford midfielder Drew Skundrich said. “I think, we look at the squad we had last year and said, ‘Wow, we had some incredible individual players, some incredible talent all over the field.’ Going into winter, something just felt like a little missing, we just had to take that time to encourage and develop every single one of our players into something special like those guys were last year.
