INTERESSIONAL MEETING OF THE SHARKS SPECIES GROUP – MADRID 2018 REPORT OF THE 2018 ICCAT INTERESSIONAL MEETING OF THE SHARKS SPECIES GROUP (Madrid, Spain, 2-6 July 2018) 1. Opening, adoption of agenda and meeting arrangements The meeting was held at the ICCAT Secretariat in Madrid, 2-6 July 2018. Dr Enric Cortés (USA), the Species Group (“the Group”) rapporteur and meeting Chairman, opened the meeting and welcomed participants. Mr. Camille Jean Pierre Manel (ICCAT Executive Secretary) welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of the issues to be discussed by the Group aimed at the requests made by the Commission regarding sharks species for the current and upcoming years. The Chair proceeded to review the Agenda, which was adopted with some changes (Appendix 1). The List of Participants is included in Appendix 2. The List of Documents presented at the meeting is attached as Appendix 3. The abstracts of all SCRS documents presented at the meeting are included in Appendix 4. Journal of the Marine The Pacific sleeper shark Somniosus pacificus is one of the largest predators in deep Suruga Biological Association of the United Kingdom Bay, Japan. A single individual of the sleeper shark (female, ∼300 cm in total length) was 101, 457–464. https://doi.org/10.1017/ observed with two baited camera systems deployed simultaneously on the deep seafloor in S0025315421000321 the bay. The first arrival was recorded 43 min after the deployment of camera #1 on 21 July 2016 at a depth of 609 m. A5 By-catch Species APPENDIX 5: BY-CATCH SPECIES A.5 By-catch species By-catch is the unintentional/incidental capture of non-target species during fishing operations. Different types of fisheries have different types and levels of by-catch, depending on the gear used, the time, area and depth fished, etc. Article IV of the Convention states: "the Commission shall be responsible for the study of the population of tuna and tuna-like fishes (the Scombriformes with the exception of Trichiuridae and Gempylidae and the genus Scomber) and such other species of fishes exploited in tuna fishing in the Convention area as are not under investigation by another international fishery organization". The following is a list of by-catch species recorded as being ever caught by any major tuna fishery in the Atlantic/Mediterranean. Note that the lists are qualitative and are not indicative of quantity or mortality. Thus, the presence of a species in the lists does not imply that it is caught in significant quantities, or that individuals that are caught necessarily die. Recently, to the study of species trophic ecology, has been applied a combination of two complementary methodologies, stomach content and stable isotope analyses With the present study I aimed at examining the trophic ecology and other biological traits of the kitefin shark Dalatias licha in the north-western Mediterranean Sea. A demersal shark which has been assessed as near threaten globally and data deficient in the Mediterranean Sea within the IUCN framework. In this study I provide morphological measures and also new information on its diet composition, trophic ecology and trophic level of this organism by means of stomach content analysis, providing dietary quantitative indexes (%F, %N and %IRI), and stable isotopes analysis by measuring δ15N and δ13C isotopic values and applying Bayesian isotopic mixing models. Also potential differences in dietary habits and basic morphology between sexes and different study areas were examined. Results show alimentary preference for small demersal sharks, followed by bony fishes, which could be a symptom of a dietary shift from fishes that were the main prey 30 years ago. -

Ramilo1 1 Instituto Español de Oceanografía, Vigo, Spain ABSTRACT The analysis of Spanish survey and fishery data from Divisions 3LMNO show that Spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) is not abundant and that this species appears in these Divisions sporadically and in depths of less than 500 meters. Black dogfish (Centroscyllium fabricii) data show that this species is present in all Divisions, but is more abundant in Div. 3NO and in depths of more than 900 m. Biomass estimated from the 3NO survey displays an increasing trend over the last three years. Commercial catches of this species are mainly a by-catch of the Greenland halibut fishery in Div. 3LMNO. Size compositions are mainly in between 50 and 70 cm of length, both for commercial and survey catch es. INTRODUCTION The aim of this paper is to review and present the Spanish information from surveys and commercial data for Spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) and Black dogfish (Centroscyllium fabricii) that were requested to the NAFO Scientific Council, in accord with the recommendation from the 2002 NAFO Symposium on Elasmobranches Fisheries. Part of this information had been presented by P. Duran et al. in 1999 for the period 1999-1998. It was developed in close collaboration with the FishFinder Programme of the Marine and Inland Fisheries Branch, Fisheries Department, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The present guide covers the deep–sea Southeastern Atlantic Ocean and that portion of Southwestern Indian Ocean from 18°42’E to 30°00’E (FAO Fishing Area 47). It includes a selection of cartilaginous fish species of major, moderate and minor importance to fisheries as well as those of doubtful or potential use to fisheries. It also covers those little known species that may be of research, educational, and ecological importance. In this region, the deep–sea chondrichthyan fauna is currently represented by 50 shark, 20 batoid and 8 chimaera species. This guide includes full species accounts for 37 shark, 9 batoid and 4 chimaera species selected as being the more difficult to identify and/or commonly caught. -

ICES Special Request Advice Ecoregions in the Northeast Atlantic and adjacent seas Published 25 September 2020 NEAFC and OSPAR joint request on the status and distribution of deep-water elasmobranchs Advice summary In response to a joint request from NEAFC and OSPAR, ICES reviewed existing information on deep-water sharks, skates and rays from surveys and the literature. Distribution maps were generated for 21 species, showing the location of catches from available survey data on deep-water sharks and elasmobranchs in the NEAFC and OSPAR areas of the Northeast Atlantic. Shapefiles of the species distribution areas are available as supporting documentation to this work. This advice sheet presents a summary of ICES advice on the stock status of species for which an assessment is available, as well as current knowledge on the stock status of species for which ICES does not provide advice. An overview of approaches which may be applied to mitigate bycatch and to improve stock status is also presented. ICES recognizes that, despite their limitations, prohibition, gear and depth limitations, and TAC are mechanisms currently available to managers to regulate outtake; therefore, ICES advises that these mechanisms should be maintained. Furthermore, ICES advises that additional measures, such as electromagnetic exclusion devices, acoustic or light-based deterrents, and spatio-temporal management could be explored. Request NEAFC and OSPAR requested ICES to produce: a. Maps and shapefiles of the distribution of the species, identifying, if possible, key areas used during particular periods/stages of the species’ lifecycle in terms of distribution and relative abundance of the species, and expert interpretation of the data products; b. -
