1 Samuel 17:4 Goliath was 6 cubit and one span tall. Some say about nine feet six inches that is if you are using 18 inches to be a span. Cubit measurement has been recorded as 21.8 inches which would made Goliath eleven feet 6 inches. Either way he would be taller than a standard ceiling in your home. Pesachim III (bmv.org.il) At the beginning of this Nazareth lesson, Jesus had already selected his disciples.

His disciples were baptizing more people than John the Baptist.

Jerusalem Jesus left Judea and was going to . On this trip he met a woman drawing up water from a well in Samaria.

This land of Israel had been divided among the 12 sons of about 1500 years before this time of Christ’s life and about 1900 years after the promise to Abraham to make his family a great nation. The region called Judea was the part of the promised land settled by the .

The region called Samaria is the part of the promised land that was given to the and the western half of the land given to Manasseh. These were the two sons of Joseph.

The region called Galilee was part of the territory of the northern tribe of , one of Jacob’s sons. Our lesson today begins after Jesus had been on His way to . “So, Jesus, tired from His journey, was just sitting by the well. It was about the sixth hour” of the day or around noon our time. John 4:6

Now when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that He was teaching and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were), He left Judea and set out once more for Galilee.

But He had to pass through Samaria. Now He came to a Samaritan town called Sychar …

… near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there so Jesus, since He was tired from the journey, sat right down beside the well. Since it was about noon it must have been part of the heat of the day with the sun overhead.

A Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus said to her …

‘Give me some water to drink.’ (For His disciples had gone off into the town to buy supplies.)

So, the Samaritan woman said to Him, ‘How can you – a Jew – ask me, a Samaritan woman, for water to drink?’ (For had nothing to do with the .) Jesus answered her, ‘If you had known the gift of God and who it is who said to you, “Give me some water to drink,” you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.’

‘Sir,’ the woman said to Him, ‘you have no bucket, and the well is deep; where then do you get this living water? Surely, you’re not greater than our ancestor Jacob, are you? For he gave us this well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock.’

Jesus replied, ‘Everyone who drinks some of this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.’ (Jesus is talking about the blessing of going to heaven where we will have everything we need.)

The woman said to Him, ‘Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.’ (She was talking about water we drink) Jesus said to her, ‘Go, call your husband and come back here.’

The woman replied, ‘I have no husband.

Jesus said to her, ‘You are right when you said, “I have no husband,” for you have had five husbands …

‘… and the man you are living with now is not your husband. This you said truthfully!’ The woman said to Him, ‘Sir, I see that you are a prophet.’

John 4:39 Now from that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all the things that I have done.”

42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One truly is the Savior of the world.” 1.
