Also, acceptance into the program is granted based on criteria determined by the JWRP. In addition, President of Federation, Leslie Shuman Kramer, initiated a new task force to lead the effort for how best to invest these resources, including grant-making to local synagogues and agencies, and the potential hire of a security expert to serve as a point of contact for law enforcement. At the first meeting last month, the task force heard from Pat Daly, Deputy Director/Chief Operating Officer of Secure Community Network (SCN), who reviewed information on facility security, community-law enforcement engagement and provided a threat overview. Next month, the task force will be meeting with Susan Case DeMari, the Security Liaison for the Jewish Federation of Central NY. A graduate of Brockport State and Syracuse University College of Law, Susan has provided trainings and seminars to strengthen the security infrastructure for the Syracuse Jewish Community.

The 34th annual Buffalo International Jewish Film Festival – the third longest running festival of its kind in North America – will present 11 award-winning and critically acclaimed films from around the world including Australia, Israel, Germany, Poland, Austria, Canada and the United States. “The Festival has striven to obtain the very best new independent international films which should not only amuse and enthrall the viewer, but should also invite contemplation on societal issues of ethics and justice,” says festival chair Michael Silverman. Included in the Festival line-up, the film Working Woman, whose protagonist must support her family, while fending off unwanted advances from her boss, bringing into consideration the #MeToo movement. In the film The Waldheim Waltz, we witness a case study of how a lying, deceitful power-monger rises to the Presidency of his country by concealing his motives and past actions. Last year Mark Sommer from The Buffalo News wrote, “The Jewish Film Festival offers poignant, powerful movies with compelling stories from around the world that have a universal appeal. There is something for everyone with your pick of documentaries, dramas, and comedies”. Films will be shown March 22-28 at the Amherst Dipson Theatre, 3500 Main Street. As the film proves, “Every instrument has a story.” In a fast-paced 30 minute presentation, the five panel members (who among them have been academics, music teachers, student musicians, conductors) will discuss how instruments have their own histories, voices, and pull. Audience members can reflect on their own experiences of being transformed by (listening or creating) music. Panelists will also share how generosity – giving/receiving an instrument, teaching a student musician how to excel, receiving guidance from another musician, making financial donations – has changed them.
