In an introduction to his publication, Victor Hugo Green wrote that "There will be a day sometime in the near future when this guide will not have to be published. That is when we as a race will have equal rights and privileges in the United States. It will be a great day for us to suspend this publication, for then we can go wherever we please, and without embarrassment." He did not live to see that day. Victor Green died in 1960 but his widow Alma continued publication until 1966.The Civil Rights Act of 1964 marked the end of legal segregation, and made the Green Book obsolete, just as Victor had foreseen. Alberta Ellis knew that when segregation eased that everything she and her family had worked for would disappear. It crossed the largely undeveloped flood plain between the towns of Valley Park to the north and Fenton on the south before picking up the path of the Antire Road towards Eureka. Most of the roadside businesses at that time were identified as being in Valley Park. In 1935, the new highway from St. Louis to the Missouri Botanical Garden Arboretum at Gray Summit was named the

Henry Shaw Gardenway in honor of the botanical garden founder. Shaw would not allow the garden to be officially named in his honor, although that never stopped us from informally calling it Shaw's Garden. But with no railroad, it remained a sleepy town that didn't even bother to hold municipal elections between 1890 and 1955. This area where the Meramec River bends sharply was a popular recreational spot decades before Route 66 opened it up to the masses. The Missouri Pacific and Frisco Railroads first brought the wealthy from St. Louis eager to escape the smoke and pollution of the city. Beautiful resorts at the Meramec Highlands and Castlewood catered to thousands of people during the summer in those days before air conditioning. Castlewood is now a state park. Valley Park thrived until the evening of August 21, 1915, when the Meramec River went on one of its rampages. 'The town and glass factory were wiped out. The river was four miles wide and 2,000 people found themselves homeless. Most of the workers moved to a new plant at Crystal City, Missouri or another glass factory at Rossford,Ohio and the population of Valley Park dropped to about 500. The resorts on the Meramec River faded after World War II. The concrete rubble of the abandoned glass factory was removed in 2002 after the body of a murdered young girl was found there and the Arnolds Grove Trail has been constructed atop the site. the Army sold 2,000 acres to Washington University for the Tyson Research Center. St. Louis County was able to acquire 456 acres. At that time, a lone elk apparently missed during the Army roundup was spotted roaming the site and the park received a new name. More elk would be brought in and were joined by a heard of bison. Today, visitors can drive through to enjoy the wildlife in Lone Elk Park. The World Bird Sancruary adjoins Lone Elk Park and is one of the largest facilities for conservation of birds in North America. Visitors can see over 200 birds in their natural environments, many rare and endangered. The mission this unique atrraction includes education, captive breeding, field studies and rehabilitation. Animal lovers can also visit the Endangered Wolf Center at Tyson Valley, founded by celebrity wildlife expert Marlin Perkins in 1971. The center offers educational programs and works to reintroduce wolves into their native habitats. Lone Elk Park marks the start of the largest remaining continuous green space in St. Louis County, which includes and the Al Foster Trail as well the Forest 44 Conservation Area, Route 66 State Park and the Beaumont Boy Scout Reservation. There are probably more vestiges of Route 66 along the way, waiting to be discovered.

Valley Mount Ranch was founded as 66 Riding Stables by Ben and Frieda Kraus in 1936. The ranch offered rodeos, trail and hay rides as well as boarding for horses. Ben and Frieda had eight children: Shirley, Gene, Darwin, Gerry, Lavern, Norita, Dottye, and Sheila. All them helped run the ranch. The original boarding facilities and approximately 30 acres were separated to establish Kraus Farms in 1986. Douglas Schneider tells us the northern edge of Valley Mount Ranch faces the old Antire Road, which predated Route 66. A remnant of old road heads west, crosses a creek, and disappears into Forest 44 Conservation Area. It's easy to park near the creek and to wander this segment of old pavement that dead ends in the middle of the forest. For over a century, Thomas Ranken Jr. and David Ranken owned most of the land south of the Meramec River and west of Meramec Station, some 12,000 acres. They allowed nearly all of it to revert back to forest, which is why 1-44 cuts through a large green belt today. According to historian Esley Hamilton, the fact that one family owned the land made public acquisition easier. The US government took over the central portion of the Ranken Estate in 1941 for an ammunition testing and storage facility, the Tyson Valley Army Powder Storage Farm. Part of the land had also been occupied by a quarry and the town of Minke. After the war, the St. Louis County Parks Department acquired the site and Tyson Valley Park opened in 1948. In 1951, a herd of elk from Yellowstone was released in the park. The government reclaimed the land during the Korean Conflict and the elk were shot for safety reasons in 1958-1959. In 1963,

In 1834, Dutch purchased property from Samuel Harris and opened a tavern on the Manchester Road, which became the state road connecting St. Louis with the capitol at Jefferson City in 1839. Hollow was a relay point on the old St. Louis and Jefferson City stagecoach line where a grove of sycamores offered a respite from the cramped quarters and bone jarring ride of the stage. During those days, Hollow had two taverns, the other operated by early settler William Barcold. In 1849, the Henry Hencken Family purchased the present site of Stovall's, and donated land for a school house. The Hencken home is adjacent to Stovall's Grove and is now owned by the Wildwood Historical Society. A post office was established at Hollow in 1884 and discontinued in 1904. In 1935, George and Mollie Stovall opened their tavern in a two story wooden building with the residence on the second floor. The shady grove became home to their children, twins Delbert and Delmer, Hazel and Chester. At the time, taverns and dance halls of rural Missouri were a place for families to eat, catch up on the local gossip and dance. Route 66 had moved away from Manchester Road a couple of years earlier, but the road still carried US 50. In the mid 1900s Hollow had two general stores, one operated by the Hencken Brothers and the other run by Harry Poerrner. There was also a shoemaker, a harness maker, a carpenter shop and two blacksmiths, one of which was Joseph Tieman. Traffic dropped substantially after Manchester lost the US 50 designation in 1955 and became Missouri 100.A new alignment constructed in the 1960s would leave Stovall's tucked away down an embankment, barely visible from the main road. The old right of way became a dead end gravel road called Stovall Lane. (THEN) Stovall's Grove was opened in 1935 by George and Mollie Stovall in the historic hamlet of Hollow, Missouri. Fire destroyed the original tavern in 1958. Performers who stopped in over the years include John Hartford and Brenda Lee, who stood on a soapbox to reach the microphone. The road in front of the tavern and dance hall in this view is original Route 66, now MO 100. A new alignment constructed in the 1960's would leave Stovall's tucked away down an embankment, barely visible from the main road. The old right of way became a dead end gravel road called Stovall Lane.

(NOW) Stovall's Grove Rockhorse Saloon still calls itself the "Home of Country Music" and remains a genuine hanky-tonk and a popular venue for events. Owners Dennis and Liz Elze have updated without destroying the tradition and ambience. The place remains a genuine hanky-tonk with great barbecue and live music.
