0130xxxx Mat svømmestævne Thorbjørnsen_ENG_2017.indd 1 06/04/2017 11.36 Welcome to Kristiansand and the North Sea Swim Meet 2018

It is my honour and pleasure to welcome you all to the North Sea Swim Meet 2018 in Kristiansand, the capital of Southern Norway. This is the second time the Swim Meet will be arranged outside of Stavanger, and we are proud to be the chosen destination for the event once again. Coming to Kristiansand and to Aquarama, our new, modern waterpark at the southern tip of Norway, is a sound choice. Aquarama and its surroundings are built specifically to facilitate international events and happenings such as this. Aquarama, with its stunning location right on the city beach of Kristiansand, is indeed also a resource for the region's residents, as well as a tourist attraction. It is a centre for public health, adventure, sports, spa and fitness – I go for a swim there myself, twice a week.

The people of Kristiansand love the sea, and we have a long-standing tradition of sea . We attract lots of tourists every year to our sunny climate along the beautiful southern coast. Other attractions you may wish to visit during your time here include the zoo and amusement park Kristiansand Dyrepark, which is Norway's most visited family attraction, and Kilden Performing Arts Centre, offering stunning theatre, music, opera, dance and ballet performances. We have an array of pleasant cafés and restaurants serving local and international food and drinks. Close to Aquarama lies the city centre, “Kvadraturen”, with its straight streets designed by King Christian IV in 1641, where you will find the best shopping experience in Southern Norway.

Welcome to Kristiansand!

Harald Halfdansson (Old Norse: Haraldr Hálfdanarson; c 850 - c 932) Better known as Harald Fairhair, was remembered by medieval historians as the first king of Norway. Harald Hairfair is the son of Eirik the Black. According to traditions applicable in Norway and Iceland in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, he reigned from c. 872 to 930. The unification of Norway is something of a love story. It begins with a courtship that resulted in rejection and scorn from Gyda, daughter of Eirik king of Hordaland. She said she refused to marry Harald "before he became king over all of Norway". Harald was therefore persuaded to take a pledge not to cut or comb his hair until he was sole king of Norway, and when he was justified in trimming it ten years later, he switched nickname "Shock Head" or "Tanglehair" (Haraldr lufa) for one that he usually is known. In 866, Harald made the first of a series of conquests over the many petty kingdoms which would composeall of Norway, including Värmland County in Sweden, who had sworn allegiance to the Swedish king Erik Eymundsson. In 872, after a great victory at Hafrsfjord (inherent in the current municipality of Stavanger), Harald found himself king over the country. His favorite son, Eirk Bloodaxe, become his successor. .
