THE AREA ADMINISTRATORS CORNER

Dear Members and Friends,

This has been a busy month one way or another. Some of our members attended the launching of 'Sliding Gunter' which was edited by our member Betty Beavis, who is to be congratulated on her foresight in seeing the value of these articles on early Warrnambool while doing her research. I have read the book twice already, and I have no doubt that I will read it again and again.

Another meeting attended was that of the Museum And Historical Records Centre Steering Committee. Here we made further arrangements for our display at the 1994 Heritage Festival to be held April 10 - 24 at the 'Regal Shoppe'.

Believe it or not I have had two instances this month when I had to help children with their homework - Family History. Think I will have to invite some of their teachers along to our Beginners Classes.

Our Annual General Meeting is to be held on the 10th March. This year our Guest Speaker is Mr Jack Ide who will address those present on the advantages of membership of the A.I.G.S. Inc. He will also speak on his pet project - Donate a Fiche.

Regards to all Marie Boyce Area Administrator

SLIDING GUNTER LAUNCHED

In our last issue I reported on the release of Research Officer Betty Beavis's new book 'Sliding Gunter'. On the 16th February at the Warrnambool City Library the book was launched at a function hosted by City Librarian Di Clanchy. The book was reviewed by Warrnambool City Archivist John Williams and officially launched by well known Warrnambool Historian Tom Wicking.

Betty spoke well on how the book came about and on information which has come to hand since publication. A nice spread with musical accompaniment was provided by the City Library. A good time was had by all who attended.

BOOKS FOR SALE

Recently three new books on the history of the Warrnambool and Port Fairy districts have been published. Thelma Birrell has out a new book on the Bostock family titled 'Mariners -Merchants ... then Pioneers' a very impressive book on her ancestors and this part of Victoria. I believe a few copies of Thelma's previous publication People & Places' covering the period 1854-65 are still in stock. The second new book is 'A Special Survey, dealing with the Atkinson Special Survey of 1843, which included the township of Port Fairy.

The third book is 'Sliding Gunter' by our own Betty Beavis which is a collection of articles on life in early Warrnambool written under the nom-de-plume 'Sliding Gunter' by Thomas Osbourne and edited by Betty.

As well as these books we also have 'Death Notices From The Warrnambool Standard, on fiche and coming soon 'Death Notices From the Hamilton Spectator,.

Marie Boyce can provide further details such as price etc. Page Three
