The Black Tent (1956) and Bengazi (1955): The Image of Arabs in Two Post-Empire Journeys into the Deserts of Libya Richard Andrew Voeltz [email protected] Cameron University Volume 7.1 (2018) | ISSN 2158-8724 (online) | DOI 10.5195/cinej.2018.200 | http://cinej.pitt.edu Abstract These two little known films are both part of the cycle of post-imperial films dealing with the decline of the British Empire. They are perhaps the only films set in or near the historical period of the British Military Administration of Libya after 1945. The Black Tent frequently gets lumped in with the genre of World War II British war films. Bengazi marks the cinematic journey of the actor Victor McLaglen from The Lost Patrol (1934) to Bengazi (1955), his career encapsulating the beginning and end of the Hollywood British Empire film genre. Both films contain redemptive dramatic journeys into the deserts of Libya involving the loss of British imperial male power. The case studies of The Black Tent and Bengazi show the beginnings of new post-empire film genres and new mentalities toward the Arab “Other” that partially promotes a decolonization of western cinema. The aim of my presentation is to make you aware of different possibilities in reusing archival footage in movies. It is my intention to inform you about the importance of the audiovisual archives and how to reuse transmitted programmes or real shots of life in new productions. It is not my intention to evaluate real shots in historical movies and to report about facts and fiction in those films. The subject is dealt with in the book called: PAST IMPERFECT. History According to the Movies. 1995, and my own paper on the same subject: HISTORY AND MOVIES: An evaluation of the information of historical events, of international known personalities and of famous sites and buildings describes in movies. Because I have worked for televison archive for about 29 years I have viewed a lot of television programmes and movies. Some years ago I started to question the reuse of transmitted television programmes and also the active reuse of news in new productions. -

Raoul Walsh to Attend Opening of Retrospective Tribute at Museum
The Museum of Modern Art jl west 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 34 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RAOUL WALSH TO ATTEND OPENING OF RETROSPECTIVE TRIBUTE AT MUSEUM Raoul Walsh, 87-year-old film director whose career in motion pictures spanned more than five decades, will come to New York for the opening of a three-month retrospective of his films beginning Thursday, April 18, at The Museum of Modern Art. In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills. -

Exhibit B: Business and Business Plan VIRAL FILMS MEDIA LLC BUSINESS AND BUSINESS PLAN Viral Films Media LLC Producing an independent live-action superhero film: REBEL'S RUN Business Plan Summary Our recently formed company, Viral Films Media LLC, will produce, market and distribute an independently produced live-action superhero film, based on characters from the recently created Alt Hero comic book universe. The film will be titled Rebel’s Run, and will feature the character Shiloh Summers, or Rebel, from the Alt Hero comic book series. Viral Films has arranged to license a script and related IP from independent comic book publisher Arkhaven Comics, with comic book legend Chuck Dixon and epic fantasy author Vox Day co-writing the script. Viral Films Media is also partnering with Georgia and LA-based production company, Galatia Films, which has worked on hits including Goodbye, Christopher Robin and Reclaiming the Blade. The director of Rebel’s Run will be Scooter Downey, an up-and-coming director who recently co-produced Hoaxed, the explosive and acclaimed documentary on the fake news phenomenon. The filming of Rebel’s Run will take place in Georgia. We have formed a board of directors and management team including a range of professionals with experience in project management, law, film production and cyber-security. Katie Walsh Selling Masculinity at Warner Bros.: William Powell, A Case Study Abstract William Powell became a star in the 1930s due to his unique brand of suave charm and witty humor—a quality that could only be expressed with the advent of sound film, and one that took him from mid-level player typecast as a villain, to one of the most popular romantic comedy leads of the era. His charm lay in the nonchalant sophistication that came naturally to Powell and that he displayed with ease both on screen and off. He was exemplary of the success of the new kind of star that came into their own during the transition to sound: sharp- or silver-tongued actors who were charming because of their way with words and not because of their silver screen faces. Powell also exercised a great deal of control over his publicity and star image, which is best examined during his short and failed tenure as a Warner Bros. during the advent of his rise to stardom. Despite holding a great amount of power in his billing and creative control, Powell was given a parade of cookie-cutter dangerous playboy roles, and the terms of his contract and salary were constantly in flux over the three years he spent there. With the help of his agent Myron Selznick, Powell was able to navigate between three studios in only a matter of a few years, in search of the perfect fit for his natural abilities as an actor. This experimentation with star image and publicity marked the period of the early 1930s in Hollywood, as studios dealt with the quickly evolving art and technological form, industrial and business practices, and a shifting cultural and moral landscape. -

Introduction
1 Introduction Haunting can be seen as intrinsically resistant to the contraction and homogenization of time and space. It happens when a place is stained by time, or when a particular place becomes the site for an encounter with broken time. (Fisher 2012 : 19) To commence on a reasonably self- indulgent note, during the 1970s most provincial towns contained at least one tatty bingo hall that had once been the local ABC or Odeon picture house. As for the handful of cinemas that still existed in town centres, they were often in a profoundly sorry state of repair. For many of my background, a birthday visit to the pictures meant passing through peeling mock Ionic columns, buying strange brands of confectionery that any discerning child would other- wise avoid and settling into plush red seats that exuded clouds of dust. Th e bill of fare would usually commence with cigarette advertisements promising a jet- set world that was entirely at odds with the surroundings both in and outside of the venue. Th e next part of the ritual was the promotions for local businesses, 1 regularly enhanced by still photographs that appeared to be a decade out of date. You would not have to be supernaturally observant to appreciate, however dimly, that these venues were fast becoming ghosts, for all the billboards promising thrills, excitement and Dave Prowse sporting what appeared to be a coal scuttle on his head. When my own cinemagoing commenced, a visit to the Odeon on Above Bar Street was an occasional treat on par with a visit to the Little Chef, 2 but even so, Southampton’s picture houses seemed just as much a relic of a recent but unattain- able past.
