A Normal Background Check: Birlingmair’s hometown, Normal, was originally named North Bloomington in 1854. The name changed in 1865 to reflect its place as the home of Illinois State Normal University, a teaching school, now called simply Illinois State University. (Teaching schools were known as “normal schools” because their purpose was to instruct the students, future teachers, in properly understanding and instilling the societal norms at the time. Many state schools began as normal schools, like UCLA, which was originally named the Los Angeles California State Normal School.) Normal is the home of the Normal Cornbelters, a member of the from 2010-2018 and now a member of the , playing their home games at The Corn Crib.
