Dear Parents,

I would like to welcome back all the learners to the school for Term 2. There are a small number of new arrivals so a special welcome to them.

Term 2 is a time when the weather can be difficult and I would encourage parents to make sure that their children go to school with adequate warm clothing. If children do get a cold please keep them at home for a day or so as they will get

better more quickly and are less likely to spread the virus to others.

At the southern end of the school there is an entrance into the school from Berdinner Ave. This entrance is not intended as access for parents to pick up their child. There is simply insufficient space for this to occur safely. We are requesting that you pick up children from the main entrance on Delshaw Ave where there is more hard paved area. The Berdinner Ave access will be locked to vehicle traffic from 2.30 to 3.30 every afternoon. This is being done to ensure that the learners can leave school safely.

In the holidays the Herald presented the NCEA results of all schools in the North Island. It was great to see that stacked up very well. What was most significant was the major improvement in our results from the previous year. For our school which has only been doing NCEA for three years it was good to see us ahead of schools with considerable more experience.

Our results at NCEA Level One were excellent but it also indicated more work needs to occur with our Year 13 learners. All of our learners in Year 13 are over 16 years of age and are able to leave school; so it is disappointing that a small number choose to have poor attendance and an attitude that will not lead to success. Over Term 2 we will be talking to learners and their families about ways to ensure that the year is successful.

I look forward to seeing many parents on the sidelines of the sports fields over the winter season. The sports programme is extensive and starts this Saturday. An especially important start to the season is for the 1st XV Rugby team who play a local derby at home against Kingsway School. If you able to come along and support I know the team will greatly appreciate it.

Notice from the nurse...

The links between water, dehydration, health and learning.

How does drinking water improve learning?

• The key to boosting the capacity to learn is to keep well hydrated throughout the day. • When we are thirsty, mental performance including memory, attention and concentration can decrease by about 10 per cent. • Pupils concentrate better because they are not distracted by the effects of dehydration such as thirst, tiredness and irritability. • Can aid behaviour management by helping to settle pupils in the classroom.

Please ensure your child brings a full water bottle to school each day - it's amazing how many of them don't!

There are also water fountains accessible to the learners around the school grounds should they need to re-fill their bottles. Thank you.

In response to a rise in the number of scooter-related claims, ACC has launched a campaign encouraging young scooter riders to cover bare skin to reduce the seriousness of injuries in a crash.

Lots of young scooter riders currently wear inappropriate clothing such as t-shirts and jandals.

As part of the 'Add another layer' campaign, scooters clad in fabric will be sent out on the streets in , Hamilton, Palmerston North and Wellington, taking the message to young riders that 'bare skin and tar seal are a bad mix'.

For more safety tips and information about the campaign go to www.scootersurvival.co.nz

One group endured mud, mud and more mud along with many hills in the Waitakere Rangers completing the Hillary Track. The other group travelled to the South Island to complete the world renound Heaphy Track. The weather was perfect and the scenery from a national geographic. MUSIC LESSONS

As a rather independent activity, parents (particularly of beginner learners) may wonder at times how they can assist and encourage their child’s progress in music. The truth is there is plenty you can do. Enquire about what they have learnt in their lessons, ensure practice is regular, encourage/praise effort and initiative, request a recital of their favourite piece of music. Music can be a very successful joint effort.

As the cold and flu season is upon us and absenteeism can be more frequent, it would be helpful to know as soon as possible if a student is unable to attend a lesson. This can be done by either contacting the individual music tutor or the music office on 424 9177 ext 3205. (Please leave a message if need be) or email [email protected] 8 Performing Arts

The flock of seagulls hair do, the large shoulder pads, the outlandish costumes, those lovely bridesmaid dresses, the spandex, the humongous cell phone, and the Madonna look-alikes, all took us on a journey through the 80's. This was one of our biggest shows to date and included approx 120 learners!! The Wedding Singer was very successful with sell out crowds over 4 nights. We had outstanding performances by our learners with many and varied musical numbers, hilarious and engaging characters, and large numbers of choreographed 80's dance moves. You took us back to the 80's and enthusiastically entertained the crowds each night with this charming love story. The Year 13 Drama learners were in charge of all the Production roles for the show and were involved in choreographing, set design, costume design, assistant directing, sound, marketing, ticketing, stage and back stage managers, make-up / hair and many other areas. Many staff were also involved and gave hours and hours of their time to help make this a successful show. Congratulations to all the learners and staff who were involved in 2011 School Production, "The Wedding Singer".

12 Rugby

Rugby 7’s The North Harbour 7’s competition was held at Hato Petra College on the 13th April. The Whangaparaoa team achieved its best result of its short history by reaching the Plate Final. Unfortunately they drew the eventual champions in section play which meant that the loss to them would consign them to the plate competition.

After a gritty but eventually losing performance against Rosmini the team performed excellently to beat Birkenhead eventually winning 31-10 with tries to Reece Brogden, Rory O’Brien and Beaudene Pumipi. The next game resulted in a game against one of the power house schools of the competition Rangitoto. The team executed a wonderful game plan with good defence and very specific offence. The win in this game placed the team in the Plate Final against .

The final was an exciting game with Northcote scoring first. However this try was cancelled with a good try scored via some great team interplay with Matt Dillon sending Rory O’Brien away to dot down. Unfortunately the try was not converted and Whangaparaoa went into the break 7-5 down. In the second half there were a number of try scoring situations but at the final whistle both teams had scored two tries and converted one meaning the scores were locked at 12 all. Sudden death extra time was played and unfortunately, for our team, after concerted pressure on the Northcote line, a Northcote player capitalised on a loose pass and ran the length of the field to score.

Congratulations to all the boys for their effort and skill.

Team Codi Wehi, Sean Willis, Reece Brogden, Rory O’Brien, Ben Foster, Beaudene Pumipi, Reihana Haare, Arron Hutchinson, Tye Gibbs, Daniel Janes and Matt Dillon.

Western Heights Tournament

On Thursday 7-10 April Whangaparaoa College travelled to Rotorua to attend the Western Heights pre-season sporting tournament. We travelled with a U14 rugby team, U15 netball team and a girls football team. All our teams played with great sportsmanship and thoroughly enjoyed the weekend of playing sport.

A big thank you to Herby Barnes, Calvin Howarth , Yvonne Revell, Debbie Fraser, Dion Coleman, Anna Gerard who gave up their weekend to coach these teams. Also all the coaches & managers plus the learners would like to say a big thank you to our cooks Mandy Bawden, Jacqui Harris, Brenda Johnston.

Western Heights Netball Report

On the 7th of April 2011 the under 15 netball team travelled down to Western Heights tournament along with the senior girls soccer team and the U14 rugby team. We played nine games throughout the weekend and won three of those games. Our most valuable player of the tournament was Madison Fraser and the fair player award went to Terri Cochrane. Although we did not win all of our games we still had a fun time in Rotorua. We would like to say thanks to Mrs Lucas for organising the trip and making it possible for us to all go. Also to our coach Yvonne Revel and manager Debbie Fraser for their time over the weekend. By Madison Fraser - Captain

Western Heights Rugby Report Last term our rugby team went down to Rotorua to compete in the Western Heights Tournament. We were all amped up and ready to go and play our first game, and the score line was very tight, going back and forth between the two teams, in the end we unfortunately lost 17-12 against a team way bigger in size than us. We were disappointed but it was a great effort considering we got well and truly beaten by Glenfield the week before. The next game we were all tired because our game started early at 8:45am. They had us on size and weight and we thought we would get hammered but we all picked up our intensity and kept it a close game. In the end we caused an upset and won17-10 in a mean game. Next we were amped up from our first win and wanted to take it to Rotorua Lakes High School, but they pulled out and we won by default. We are all excited for our final game tomorrow and hope to pick up another win. We would also like to say a special thanks to our coaches Herby Barnes and Mr.Howarth. Players of the day: Joshua Hohia and Zac Osborne, special mentions to Hoera Greening, Cameron Dabb, Dylan Fenton-Panui, Shea Attwood and Callum Sainty for tackling hard and playing well out of their normal positions. Here is the run down on the promotion for people to fundraise for your school while also winning for themselves. All they have to do is text in the code on the back of the Anchor Milk bottles that display the logo below. Not asking them to do anything extra other than nominate your school to be in with a chance to win. The promotion has started and runs till the end of June. Good Luck!

Anchor gives more than $500,000 to Kiwi communities and schools Sports equipment, computers and new books for the library are just some of the things that 84 lucky schools from around New Zealand will be able to purchase thanks to the Great Anchor Milk Run initiative.

The Great Milk Run will see up over $500,000 invested into New Zealand communities. Every day for 84 days, Anchor will award a new winning consumer $2,500 for themselves and $2,500 for the school of the winning consumer’s choice. Anchor will then also give one lucky New Zealander and their nominated school $50,000 each in the grand prize draw, opening up a world of opportunities. This is the second year Anchor has supported Kiwi schools and it was seeing the difference the prize money made to last year’s winning school that made Anchor want to continue this initiative. The Great Anchor Milk Run runs from April 4th to June 26th and will be giving schools and consumers the chance to win their share of $500,000 cash by simply purchasing any specially 19 marked 1L, 2L or 3L bottle of Anchor milk.
