Ammonites Fossil Replicas & Life Reconstructions Invertebrates Ammonites Fossil Replicas & Life Reconstructions Order: Ammonoidea Family: Placenticeratidae Genus: Placenticeras Species: meeki Late Cretaceous - 73 MYBP Pierre Shale, South Dakota 28” (71cm) in diameter The arms and heads of these ammonites were sculpted on casts of the fossil shells. Since ammonites share more similarities with squid and octopuses than with the chambered nautilus, these reconstructions more closely resemble these swift extant relatives, the squid and octopus. The colors of the coiled Placenticeras’ head and arms match those of an attacking octopus. The jaws of the Placenticeras life reconstruction were molded and cast from the preserved jaws of a Placenticeras specimen. Studying the preserved beaks and radula of the ammonites teach us that they were capable of biting through the shell and bones of their prey. Ammonites were active predators within the water column, feeding on crustaceans, small fishes, and molluscs including other ammonites. Baculites lived during the last 30 million years of Pierre Shale, South Dakota the Cretaceous Period and were abundant in the Late Cretaceous Western Interior seaway. They were probably swift, active predators as well as food for larger cephalopods and marine vertebrates. Adults ranged from 3 inches in length to more than 6 feet in size. The northward movement of this plate implied shifting latitudes and climate belts, until it finally collided with Asia during the early Cenozoic. Geophysical data and plate tectonic models show that after splitting from Gondwana, the Indian plate remained as an isolated continent for more than 45 Ma during the Cretaceous; thus, it predicts a remarkable biotic endemism for the continent. Paleontological data on the Cretaceous vertebrates of India is best known for Maastrichtian time; in turn, the pre-Maastrichtian record is very poor—it contains very few fossils of fishes and marine reptiles. The Maastrichtian fossil record comprises vertebrates of Gondwana and Laurasian affinities and some endemic, ancient lineages as well.

    AMMOLITE:IRIDESCENT FOSSILIZED AMMONITE FROM SOUTHERN ALBERTA, CANADA By Keith A. Mychaluk, Alfred A. Levinson, and Russell L. Hall A relative newcomer to the world gem market (since the 1960s), Ammolite is a form of aragonite that is obtained from vivid iridescent fossilized ammonite shells mined in Alberta, Canada. The gem material, from the extinct species Placenticeras meeki and P. intercalare, is found only in certain horizons of the Bearpaw Formation of Late Cretaceous age (about 70 –75 million years old). Because the iridescent layer is generally thin and fragile, most Ammolite is fashioned into assembled stones. Introduction Albian to Cenomanian sedimentary formations are exposed along the axial part of Korjak-Kamchatka, a main Mid-Cretaceous depocenter in the Pacific margin of NE Russia (Fig. 1). The rocks were deposited in the miogeosynclinal trough between the foreland of the Okhotsk-Chukchi volcano-plutonic belt and a system of island arcs, which migrated towards the foreland during the Albian and away from it since the Cenomanian (ALABUSHEV & WIEDMANN 1994b, ALABUSHEV, in press). The genera Puzosia, Placenticeras, Cunningtoniceras, Nigericeras, Metoicoceras, Rubroceras and Hoplitoides and the subgenus C. (Gentoniceras) are recorded for the fi rst time from the Arabian Peninsula. Based on the ammonite ranges, a sequence of nine bioevents of the Albian–Turonian is correlated within the zonation, and some markers allow correlations at a larger scale, at least along the southern Neo-Tethys margin. The ammonite data give new constraints for the correlations of the lithological units along the Adam Foothills West-East transect and they question the defi nition of the lithostratigraphic units within the Natih Formation, especially the Natih A and B members. From a paleogeographic point of view Oman is a landmark for the distribution of the ammonites between the western Neo-Tethys (Europe, North Africa, Middle East) and the eastern Neo-Tethys (Africa, Madagascar and India). INTRODUCTION The present study analyzes the taxonomy and the temporal and spatial distribution of Cretaceous ammonites collected during two missions in the mountains of Oman in 2009 and 2012. This paper follows an important related previous work by Kennedy and Simmons (1991) that has been achieved on the ammonites of Oman. Some biostratigraphic and paleogeographic results have already been discussed in a synthesis of the Cenomanian–Turonian faunas along the southern Neo- Tethys margin from Morocco to Oman (Meister and Piuz, 2013). The microfauna is the object of separate papers (Piuz and Meister, 2013; Piuz et al., 2014).

Jouaniceras sp., Eubostrychoceras acuticostatum (d’Orbigny, 1842), Glyptoxoceras crispatum (Mo- berg, 1885), Baculites fuchsi Redtenbacher, 1873. Jouaniceras hispanicum Wiedmann, 1994 and Eubostrychoceras acuticostatum (d’Orbigny, 1842) are recorded for the first time from the Gosau Group confirming the close connection with the Upper Creta- ceous of the Corbières (France: Kennedy in Kennedy et al. 1995). 11 Taxa Ammoniten aus dem oberen Santonium des Hofer- grabens (Gosau-Gruppe; Ober- österreich) werden beschrieben: Pachydiscidae gen.
