2 Editorial Dear Readers, Barring any last minute U-turns we are now out of lockdown. We are hoping that September will see CBO News return to your letter box. Whatever happens the online version will continue to be available free on the website (for full details on how to get it direct to your Inbox please see page 76). There are, of course, very few activity reports in this issue and it is probable that it will still be some months before we have reached even a ‘new normal’. However, it is great news to see that, albeit hesitantly, things are beginning to start up again. Today is the first day of rain after the blinding heat and, hopefully, will spare you having to water the garden for a couple of days. A shaded lamp and a waving blind, And the beat of a clock from a distant floor: On this scene enter—winged, horned, and spined— A longlegs, a moth, and a dumbledore; While ‘mid my page there idly stands A sleepy fly, that rubs its hands …

Thus meet we five, in this still place, At this point of time, at this point in space. —My guests besmear my new-penned line, Or bang at the lamp and fall supine. “God’s humblest, they!” I muse. Yet why? They know Earth-secrets that know not I. An August Midnight - Thomas Hardy Until next month Jon, Josh & Dave

4 Jon’s Thought So, that was Freedom Day … it feels strangely the same – a case of plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose. For those of us who live in the far east of the Benefice, the A303 today (23rd July) is already packed and with the final schools closing for the summer, we are going to have to wait hours to cross it. Here is hoping that Devon and Cornwall do not sink to join Atlantis. This Newsletter is certainly no place to comment on political decisions but nevertheless we have to accept the scientific predictions that there will be many more infections, cases of Long Covid, hospitalisations and, sadly but inevitably, deaths in the coming weeks. Most of you reading this will have had both vaccines. The south-west has the highest percentage of vaccinations in the country but infections are still rising here. There are now 1042 in South Somerset alone, up 212 from last week. Personally, I am not going anywhere without a mask. They are now, except in medical facilities, no longer compulsory, but I realised this week, that as much as I hate wearing one, I just do not feel safe without it. Yesterday I was shocked, though regrettably not surprised, to see how many young people were ignoring all instructions in a supermarket to be masked, sanitised and socially-distanced. We must just hope that younger people, who are now the most infected, decide to have the vaccine in order to protect all of us. May you be kept safe and healthy in the coming months Jon

5 Thoughts from Bishopswood

I have never written one of these notes on prayer. The reason is that it is a difficult subject. I have one book written by a Christian scientist who is clearly not silly. His book shows that he knows his stuff and is very knowledgeable. He claims that God determines what every atom in the universe is doing. That means that he can do and does do everything and that there is no such thing as a free choice. That would be great. I could pray for anything and God is capable of doing what I ask and if I don’t get it he has rejected my request. If a friend dies it is his fault. I do observe that if he gets better Christians will say that God has done it and praise God for answered prayer. If he dies nothing is said. I find the inconsistency difficult. My trouble is that I am naturally an engineer. I spent a lot of my life designing radar systems. I had to make things to time and cost and I wouldn’t redesign the wheel if there was no need to do so. Economics and time scales dictated that. It meant that I would use something that I had already designed and got working if it would do the job even if there were a number of inbuilt redundancies. My wheel might have five spokes and be stronger than I need but if it did the job I wouldn’t design one with four spokes. That would save the cost of redesigning it. I see that design attitude throughout nature. We have a redundant appendix. We don’t need the ability to smell in the way that a dog does. All the smell genes are there but a large number of them are turned off. God appears to have an engineering mind. That suggests to me that when he doesn’t need to control every atom in a star at the far end of the universe he doesn’t do so but lets it run. That would mean that we exist in a world that, on the whole, runs itself. If people cause suffering there is suffering. If nature produces Covid there is ovid. In exceptional circumstances God may intervene but he doesn’t naturally do so. To me that explanation makes the most sense of the world. The trouble is that rational as I like to think myself to be, my emotions make me inconsistent. I pray knowing that I cannot demand a miracle on every occasion. That means that I am not disappointed when the answer is, “No.” Being inconsistent means that I tend to say thank you over little things that go right even if God hasn’t necessarily done them. I accept the 6 7 slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and work around them where it is possible to do so knowing that whether good or bad the Bible promises that all things work together for good to those who love God. It avoids lots of disappointments, means that my efforts are meaningful and that I can trust God to see me through. Ultimately there is eternal life for those that put their trust in Jesus whether the route is hard or easy and that is what matters. Nyall Cherish Our Hedges Hedges have been with us for thousands of years as boundary markers, but have a multitude of other purposes and benefits which we so often overlook. Before the advent of machinery, hedges were of course cut and trimmed by hand which was labour intensive, when labour was plentiful and cheap.

Through rotational management, when a hedge was cut and laid every ten to twenty years, a crop of firewood, bean sticks, hazel spars for thatching, sticks for hurdles and stakes and rails for fencing would be harvested. Thus, there would always be a variety of hedges in different stages of growth across the farm with lots of ample cover for wildlife, with flowers, fruits and berries providing a food source. With the advent of the flail hedge trimmer, it became easy to manage hedges from the seat of a tractor, the flail beat the trimmings into tiny bits so there was no more clearing up to do by hand. A lot of our hedgerow trees and shrubs produce flowers, fruits and berries on the previous year’s growth, 8 so annual trimming might look neat and tidy to some, but actually vastly reduces the food source and habitat of a huge array of our native wildlife. We wonder why our state of nature report is so catastrophic, with so many species in serious decline. Well, our hedgerows can be part of the solution if we change our ways. Grant money is available to incentivise farmers to reduce their cutting to two or three year rotations, to raise the height of their hedges by several inches a year and ultimately let them grow up to be laid. If a hedge is managed properly and laid well it becomes a stock proof barrier in itself, although a post and wire fence is often put up for guaranteed protection. I generally find a temporary electric fence does the trick for a year or two. Hedges provide a valuable wildlife corridor, connecting areas of habitat, whilst providing shelter and shade to stock, which they fail to do if flailed down low and tight every year. They help soil conservation, reduce pollution and flooding and contribute to pest and disease control. Hedges also have a great capacity to sequester carbon, which we desperately need to do, to mitigate climate change. They create a great opportunity to let saplings grow up into mature trees. An Oak tree for example is host to over two hundred and eighty species. On the roadside and for various obvious health and safety reasons, it is understandably important to trim annually but, farmers and gardeners alike, we could employ a much lighter touch across our landscape, in terms of both height and width and enjoy the multitude of benefits that would bring to all creatures great and small, and the planet. For more information on the importance of hedges and how best to manage them have a look at the Peoples Trust for Endangered Species website Hedgerows - People's Trust for Endangered Species (ptes.org) Jonathan Farey

17 Veronica Moore Yarty Gardening Club A beautiful, south facing, five-acre garden was awaiting our club members when they came together to visit South Wood Farm in the middle of the month. The 17th century, thatched farmhouse anchors the different garden rooms which were re-designed and renovated in 2008 by Arne Maynard, the award winning, international garden designer. His aim, to achieve harmony between the garden and the house, was immediately evident in the Front Courtyard where the espaliered Malus ‘Evereste’ link the house and outbuildings to form the courtyard. Within this courtyard a large, clipped bay tree forms the focal point and paths divide the garden into quadrants. The strong lines of the sculptural yew topiary are softened by the lavender edged path and the beautiful planting of pinks, purples and whites. A luxurious mix of astrantias, alliums, thalictrums, geraniums and foxgloves set off by the dark Athriscus sylvestris ‘Ravenswing’ and Lupin ‘Masterpiece’. The climbing pink rose, ‘Cécile Brünner’ was flowering well on the south wall of the farmhouse, giving out its wonderful sweet fragrance to anyone passing by.

18 19 A sunken serpentine path, which snakes its way through a swathe of meadow grasses and oxeye daisies, links the Front Courtyard garden to the Plum Orchard. Here we found nine plum trees each growing through a plinth of beech. Very geometric and formal but how easy is it to harvest the plums? Next to the orchard is the kitchen garden which Arne designed to link to the old farmhouse. Lawn paths divide the space into four squares, each of which is subdivided into smaller plots, many surrounded by step over pears. The 22 raised beds are framed with oak boards and corner finials. This kitchen garden is run organically with the ‘no dig’ method and was the envy of most of the club members. The fruit cages are reminiscent of Tudor tents or pagodas, and many of the beds were surrounded by plantings of sweet Williams and Calendulas, which together with white foxgloves, alliums and honesty, gave the whole area the feel of a potager. It also supplies the house with plenty of cut flowers. We particularly loved the clumps of simple and stylish single white peonies. Some very smart cold frames lined the walls and at the back of the kitchen garden was a sunken greenhouse used to propagate plants for the garden as well as housing the tender vegetables. We had several hours to wander around this glorious garden as well as the nuttery and the meadows. Even though the day was quite overcast there were still plenty of bees working amongst the meadow flowers. We hope to be visiting another garden this month so look out for details, to follow in an email. I know that many club members will be preparing your produce for the Buckland Flower Show, so there is no list of things to do in the garden this month. Instead take some time to do a summer tour of your garden to discover what’s working well and what’s not. If you can identify any problem areas now, there is plenty of time during the autumn and winter to sort them out before the next growing season. Take some photos, make notes, and if you can, invite a curious gardening friend to give you a fresh perspective on your garden. If nothing else you will enjoy a lovely wander round, perhaps with a glass of something refreshing in hand. Pauline Bartlett 20

25 21st Parish Litter Pick 23 pickers, plus 2 background support – a total of 25 volunteers turned out to pick. The July Pick is always much lighter than the other two – with rampant vegetation (neck-high nettles) hiding much which is not fully on the roadside, just awaiting us in November! Nevertheless, we collected 17 sacks, 2 tyres, 3 abandoned temporary road signs/notices, some plastic sheeting, and 2 pistons. After sorting we recycled 108 drinks cans, 69 plastic and 22 bottles, together with all metal, plastic food trays and lids, cardboard/paper, and aluminium foil. Lots of awards this time – a bronze hubcap and chocolates to Simon Shovelton (for completing 20 Picks); and blue hubcaps and chocolates to Shirley Haydon, Tanya Hetherington, John Marsden, Nicky Needham and Philip Needham (for completing 10 Picks). Blackdown Ladies The Blackdown Ladies Group has met continuously for many years. However in common with many other organisations we have had to suspend our monthly meetings for eighteen months during the pandemic. With the end of restrictions on the horizon we are hoping to resume meetings on September 2nd 2021 and will (fingers crossed) be reassembling at 7:30pm in Otterford Village Hall Bishopswood. Julie Wardle Parish Clerk Churchstanton Primary School Well, we have reached the end of a momentous year here at Churchstanton Primary School. It has been full of challenges but also unexpected rewards. The pupils have grown in determination and resilience in the face of the pandemic over the last 16 months and have really shown us what amazing young people they are. With the excellent support of school staff, parents & carers they have been able to continue learning and thriving whether learning at home or in school, and have made good progress and achieved well this year. With the relaxation of some of the COVID restrictions towards the end of this term, we have been able to enjoy many of the traditional summer term activities. The Cricket Ground provided Badger Class with an outdoor stage on which to perform and they really did perform! What talented children we have here and what a dedicated staff team who ably directed and produced Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies. Well done to all involved. KS2 pupils enjoyed all things Harry Potter on World Harry Potter night in 36

The Blackdown Support Group aims to relieve sickness, loneliness and isolation by connecting local people in need with local volunteers who can offer them practical support. Those who are suffering from physical or mental ill health, who have disabilities or learning difficulties, or who are experiencing bereavement or the effects of old age can find themselves cut off in rural areas like ours, without access to transport, support services and social opportunities.

The BSG has over 300 people registered with us for support. We can help anyone who is a patient of the Blackdown Practice. The services our volunteers provide include:‐

 Driving – to medical appointments, social and well‐being events, generally enabling greater independence  Befriending ‐ visiting those who may be unable to leave their own home or have limited social contact with other people, relieving feelings of loneliness and isolation  Social events ‐ lunch clubs, coffee mornings, carers groups, providing opportunities to meet friends and enjoy a home cooked nutritious meal  Mentoring ‐ trained volunteers provide a structured support programme for those who are struggling to re‐integrate back into the community, perhaps after bereavement, an accident or long period of ill health  Advocacy – providing support with filling in forms and paperwork to ensure people have access to the services or financial support they need  We also offer footcare services, short‐term wheelchair loans and a disabled access vehicle for hire.

If you’d like to find out more please get in touch, whether you would like to help as a volunteer or you may know someone who needs help, who is alone, feeling isolated or struggling to care for a loved one. Either way we’d love to hear from you.

37 June. Class teachers, Mrs. Tildesley & Mr. Turner dressed up as Professor McGonagall & Hagrid respectively and treated the children to a range of activities designed to celebrate the works of JK Rowling. Readings from the books, games and butter-beer were on offer and the children had a wonderful time. Our “Garden Party” became a musical celebration with the children all enjoying the opportunity to sing, dance and perform to each other for the first time in over a year. It was a real treat. We had guitar solos, pianists, a violinist and some excellent drummers! The choir also sang to the school ably conducted by Mrs Berry. Parents were able to enjoy the performances virtually on our online platform, Google Classroom. The PTA Summer Fete was a huge success and a massive thanks must go to the PTA, the committee and all the volunteers and helpers who turned out to support our main fundraiser this year. We managed to raise over £2000 - an impressive amount which will make a huge difference to the children here at school, providing enrichment activities for next academic year. Thank you to everyone involved for their help and generous donations. We also managed to have our Sports Day this year with parent spectators despite COVID restrictions. It was a fun-filled day with lots of team building activities and competitive races too. Many thanks to Mrs. Adams for organising such an enjoyable day. Our Year 6 leavers will be moving on to their respective secondary schools in September. They have been a remarkable group of children who are ready for the next step in their learning journey and will be missed by us all here at school. A leavers' assembly will be held on the last day of term where we can celebrate each every one of them and their individual successes. The Chair of Governors will award the trophies to those who have excelled in some way, be it Academically, in the Arts or at Sport. The decision is always very difficult as all our pupils have talents and shine in their own ways. We wish them every success for the future. We know they will do themselves and us proud as they move into Year 7. Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents, carers and friends of the school. We couldn’t have got through this year without your support, frequent good wishes, generous gifts and offers of help. I am really 38 Somerset West and Taunton Council fund a not-for-profit loan scheme for homeowners and landlords*. 43 Winners of the Cricket Club Pavilion Bonus Ball in June 5th 17 Andy Browne 12th 50 9th 14 26th 19 Donald Pitman Yarcombe & District YFC Both May and June were busier in the YFC calendar, as guidelines and restrictions surrounding Covid-19 begun to ease in respect of what clubs/organisations, such as YFC, were permitted to do. At the beginning of May on the bank holiday, the club held a group bike ride, which started at the Sidmouth Arms in Upottery and ended at the York Inn in Churchinford. Well done to those who came along, it was a very enjoyable day. We also held an outside social BBQ on the 19th May, thank you to our Club Leader, Roger Patch, for kindly allowing the event to take place. As June approached, competitions such as the East Devon Stockjudging were underway. Yarcombe YFC were placed third in terms of the club with the most overall points. We are very proud of our member, Henry Pearse, who participated and did very well in the competition. Henry was placed first in the Dairy Linear and was awarded fourth place in Dairy, along with being awarded fourth place for the overall Junior Stockjudging competition. Preparations for the Devon County Show also begun, in terms of both club and individual entries. Thank you to those members who took the time to enter individual classes at Devon County Show. As the restrictions started to ease surrounding weddings, we also had a couple of YFC members tie the knot! Congratulations and best wishes to Becca & Adam Pulman on their special day back at the end of April and also Dean & Claire Parris, who recently married in June. It is a particularly exciting and encouraging time, with prospective club events in the very near future. Club meetings are able to be held in person, 44 45 as opposed to ZOOM, and it has been wonderful to be reunited with our friends and members at long last. Further club meetings are in the pipeline and we will look to be discussing and arranging summer social events very soon- we look forward to being able to share details with you all, when we can. As always, we encourage all members to stay actively involved and connected with Young Farmers. If anyone would like to become involved in Young Farmers, we would love you to join our club and encourage you to contact our Chairman or Secretary for more information. If anyone has any further questions please contact our Chairman Dan Olive on 07811744714, or our Secretary Natalie Sampson on 07775591324. We hope you all stay safe and well. Katie Trevelyan Press Secretary Our Thatching Life … featuring Ferrari the Thatcher, Daisy his apprentice and almost all the animals … A month on and the little wheat reed thatch at Tatworth is done, and what a finish it was. The customers had bought us each some lovely gifts: My very own bee suit! A beautiful travel mug and a book about apples for Daisy, and chocolates to share. Probably the best bit of our job is getting to know the people we work for. Everyone has their own stories, their own take on life, and we are lucky to spend enough time with them to hear a good chunk of that. We have however now ground to a complete halt. On phoning my reed supplier to book delivery of the water reed for the fairly huge re-thatch in Honiton, I was told that there wasn’t a single straw to be had in the place as the reed is stuck on route. I phoned another and he promised me some of his … in the nick of time as he then had five others phone desperate for reed.

47 Promised it may be, but that hasn’t arrived yet either, so it’s been two weeks now of seeing customers to explain the delays, repairing and sheeting those that needed it and mentally twiddling my thumbs. Daisy’s barn has seen the benefit as any extra time has been spent fixing up the stockboard and yorkshire boarding, so that’s looking more barn-like with every passing day. We’ve fetched the heifer back from the Dartmoor dating agency, so it’s fingers crossed for another calf next year. This year’s calf, named Benny by the girls, still hasn’t quite forgiven us and keeps his back to us while we check over the others. He looks well tho’ so his Ma is feeding him well. The pigs are shiny as washed pebbles as I’ve got them dowsed in pig oil to keep the lice at bay. Any timber at pig rubbing height is rapidly achieving the high gloss of French polish. The hardest part of the month came from the Kraken, my little black yard cat. He’d not been back to eat his tea for a few days, so Tom and I went out looking for him and found him laid out dead on the verge up near Curtis’ old yard. Now I’m not much of a cat fan, but having saved the wild little thing from dying at the loss of his mother and getting used to his company at the yard, it turns out I was pretty attached to him. I’ll be honest it didn’t do me a lot of good for a couple of days, and I’m probably only just beginning to get used to him not being there now. Speaking of people not being there, Daisy is off on a mission to sell cider at Farmers markets throughout Devon … Exeter and Dartmouth last weekend, Tavistock and over the border to Plymouth this weekend, probably just as well the thatching is delayed!
