6 WHAT MAKES NATURAL HOT SPRINGS WATER HOT? The earth gets hotter the deeper you go – the temperature increases about 30°C (86°F) for each kilometre of depth. Therefore, rock 3 to 4 km (2 to 2.5 mi) below the surface is above the boiling temperature of water. Water from rain and snow in our mountains can penetrate several kilometres into the earth through natural ‘plumbing’ systems of permeable rock, fractures and faults. The water heats up and is subjected to pressure that drives it back to the surface where it pools in our Kootenay Rockies hot springs.

Relax. Refresh. Return.
