In my time as Secretary of State, I have had the privilege of meeting many wonderful people. As co-chair of the Washington State Combined Fund Drive (CFD), I continue to be moved by the volunteers and donors who have shown so much goodwill in our communities.

State employees, already working tirelessly as public servants, take time out of their day to give back in the most incredible ways through the CFD. This generosity makes Washington State’s public giving program one of the most successful in the country.

Nonprofit organizations around the state are working every day for those in need, and it gives me great pride to co-chair a program that helps bring them much needed financial relief.This year alone, state and higher education employees pledged more than $5 million to local, national and global charities through payroll contribution and fundraising events.

I promise to continue this inspiring legacy, and I thank all of our wonderful donors and volunteers for your determined efforts and generous contributions.

Empowering Washington public employees and retirees to strengthen communities through the funding and support of charities.

For more than 30 years, the Washington State Combined Fund Drive has set the standard of giving amongst similar workplace giving programs. With the help of our incredible volunteers, and the generous gifts from every participant, the CFD has helped strengthen our community through sustained contibutions.

For the past 12 years, over 16,000 active and retired public employees pledge more than $5 million to local, national and global charities through payroll contribution and agency fundraising events. Kim Wyman Works for You In 2014, Secretary of State Kim Wyman made a promise. Any agency that achieved 100% participation (or large agency that doubled its original participation percent- age) would have her services for a day.

It was such a success that the Secretary threw down the same challenge to agen- cies in 2015, offering up her work skills to any agency or higher education that ac- complished the same goal during this year’s campaign.

The Combined Fund Drive is the only public giving program in the country that tracks volunteer hours. The estimated average dol- lar value for volunteer time in Washington state is more than $27 per hour. This means that state and higher education employees saved charities in their communities more than $173,000 in paid staff time during 2015.

It takes less than a minute. The ground violently shifts beneath your feet. You lose your bearings. Fear rushes through your mind almost as swiftly as the vibrations.

When it’s all over, you’re left picking up the pieces.

That’s what happened to the citizens of Nepal, who were struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25, 2015. More than 8,800 people lost their lives, over 21,000 were injured and another 450,000 were displaced as a result of the immense damage.

Within days, international relief charities from around the world were on the ground providing services amidst the chaos, CFD donors did their part, donating over $40,000 in just three weeks to a number of member charities assisting with rescue efforts on the ground.

The citizens of Nepal have a long way to go to find relief, but CFD donors have helped begin the process of healing.

The conditions were perfect for chaos. A scorching summer and no rain led to the largest wildfire season in Washington State’s history.

In particular, a fire in the Chelan area burned through 54,500 acres of land, displacing thousands of families and causing millions of dollars in damage. A state of emergency was declared by the Governor on August 21.

But through incredible adversity comes moments of hope.

The entire state came together. Firefighting crews from nearly every county flooded the area, dozens of nonprofits began taking in families affected by the blazes, and the Department of Natural Resources even sent a call out to private citizens looking for assistance.

CFD donors came coming together for their fellow citizens, donating tens of thousands of dollars to member charities who were on the ground all over Washington State, assisting families affected by the intense fires, and first responders fighting the blazes.

During the 2014 and 2015 fire seasons, the CFD has raised more than $70,000 for regions affected throughout the state. North Central Washington has specifially benefitted from the generosity of state employees, receiving over half that total.

This year will long be remembered by those affected by wildfires. But they will also remember the incredible generosity displayed by our member charities, as well as the donors who made a difference by giving through the CFD.

First Week to Give

The first week of the Annual Giving Campaign is always filled with anticipation and enthusiam, but this year’s first week was special.

For the first time ever, the CFD partnered with Washington State Employees Credit Union to reward donors who gave duing the First Week to Give. A $5 Starbucks card was received by any state employee who either started a new donation, or upped their current donation by $5 or more.

The week was an incredible success, bringing in over 750 new or increased donations (the most by far in the program since 2008) and raising a record-setting $13,556 for member charities during the first week of theAnnual Giving Campaign.

It was yet another example of the fun and innovative ways the CFD works to benefit the community, as well as the power of a group of donors making a difference.

The program has two different classification of expenses: operational and fundraising. The Combined Fund Drive splits in remaining costs amongst only the charities receiving funding from specified payroll contributions or fundraising dollars. The costs are administered on a percentage-of-the-whole basis. So that means the more a charity receives in specified contributions, the more their fees will be when disbursing to their organization.
