Candidate Brief Head of the Preparatory School, Kowloon Bay Kellett School, The British International School in Hong Kong

Background Afforded charitable status by the Hong Kong Government, Kellett School is a leading provider of quality British-style education, in a day-school setting, catering to the English-speaking community in Hong Kong. Educating children aged 4 to 18 years, the school occupies two purpose-built campuses: one on (), the other on the Kowloon Peninsula (Kowloon Bay), together offering 1,400 student places.

Kowloon Bay campus (opened in September 2013) accommodates a two-form entry Preparatory School with 320 students on the roll and a four-form entry Senior School that, expanding year on year, accommodates 600 students aged 11-18 years.

Pok Fu Lam campus (opened in 1976) is a three-form entry Preparatory School housing a maximum of 480 students aged 4-11 years.

Kellett School Association Ltd Kellett School is a registered company with limited liability that operates as a not-for-profit organisation. Kellett is recognised by the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Department as a charity. All parents are members of the ‘Association’ and the operations of the school are overseen by a Board of twelve parent Governors, and three ex-officio members; The Principal, The Director of Finance (Bursar) and an Education Advisor, (The Principal and Director of Finance are non-voting).

The day-to-day operations of the school are delegated to the Principal and CEO who, working closely with the Senior Management Team (Director of Finance, Heads of School, HR Manager, Admissions Director, Director of Development & Communications Relations and Senior Accountant), manages the school, reporting to the Board on a regular basis. Heads of School enjoy autonomy to lead their campus within a delegated structure. The Heads of Kowloon Bay Preparatory and Pok Fu Lam Preparatory and their teams work closely together. A stable video conferencing facility supports cross campus meetings.

Kellett School is an international member of HMC (the UK Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference) and of IAPS (the UK Independent Association of Prep Schools); was a founding member of FOBISIA (the Federation of British International Schools In Asia); and in the process of completing Patron’s Accreditation with COBIS (the Council of British International Schools). It is inspected under the UK Government’s BSO (British Schools Overseas) scheme. The School is required by the Hong Kong Education Bureau to maintain a minimum of 70% overseas passport holders. The majority of our students are the dependants of expatriates working in Hong Kong on short to long term assignments. Kellett is a high-performing school with excellent outcomes throughout both Prep schools - the Senior School achieves some of the best public examination results in the region. Admission to Reception and KS1 is on the basis of waiting lists, but thereafter entry to the school is selective based on assessments and interviews. The school makes no EAL provision; students must be able to access the curriculum at a level appropriate to their age. 7 The Kowloon Bay Campus

The Kowloon Bay Campus is a purpose-built, two-form entry Preparatory School, for students aged 4-11 years. It offers a light, bright and modern environment. The campus is comprised of: a playground, roof playground, specialist art room, music room, science lab, computer lab, multi-purpose auditorium, resources room, inclusion suite, cooking room, spacious library, and fourteen classrooms. The campus is generously resourced, including a high-speed network and wireless throughout. The Preparatory School has a strong tradition in the use of technology in the classroom with a one-to-one iPad roll-out underway at KS2. All teachers are issued with iPads and MacBooks and classrooms are fitted with interactive data screens throughout the school. Generous curriculum resources are available throughout, including a well-stocked library. Significant numbers of students join the instrumental programme, choir, orchestra and ensembles. PE and sports are well represented, with Kellett teams competing within the Hong Kong school leagues and participating in friendly inter-school matches. There is a rich ECA programme offering approximately 40 activities per week. The curriculum and assessment structure is based upon the National Curriculum for England, although in reality, the Kellett Curriculum teaches well beyond the National Curriculum framework. The curriculum embodies the school aim of engendering ‘a love of learning and confidence for life’. Where appropriate the curriculum is localised, drawing upon the richness of Hong Kong and its environment. Field trips and visits within and beyond Hong Kong, and learning from first-hand experiences form an important strand within the curriculum. Mandarin (Putonghua) is taught throughout the school. Read Write Inc is used at EYFS and Key Stage 1. Despite being non-selective, our PIPS and longitudinal data indicate that the majority of children generally achieve in the upper quartile. It is a requirement that children can access the curriculum in English, with the exception of those occupying a very small number of EAL places. Currently, approximately 95% of children are native English speakers. A strong Learning Support Department ensures that we can admit students of all abilities and that families may be educated together. Kellett was founded by like-minded parents, and to this day, the school still values a strong legacy of parental involvement. Parents have high expectations of their children and their school, but they are equally supportive giving generously of their time, expertise and supporting the funding of additional opportunities. The Head of School - Kowloon Bay Campus has overall responsibility for the effective and empowering leadership and management of their campus operations and, by contributing through the SMT, for the leadership of the school as a whole.

The Head of School is accountable to the Principal &. CEO for their Campus for the following areas:

• the welfare and attainment of the students in their care; • effective staff performance; • the judicious use of resources including staffing; • the proper exercise of financial and other responsibilities and authorities delegated; • safety and health (including student safeguarding); • constructive and respectful parent/school relationships.

Leadership and Strategy

9 Remuneration

A generous package including world class salary, 22% annual gratuity, medical insurance scheme, school fee remission and relocation allowance is offered according to eligibility. Full details will be made available to shortlisted candidates.

Interviews Covid-19 restrictions mean that it is not possible at this time to secure visitor visas for Hong Kong; furthermore, there is a strict 14-day quarantine in place for all coming into the region. As a consequence, much of the recruitment procedure will have to be conducted by online video- conferencing interviews with both the senior team and other key stakeholders.

However, there will be some face-to-face interviews:
