Past Yasuda Kinen winners that have subsequently become the season’s Horse of the Year include Oguri Cap (JPN, by Dancing Cap; ’90), Taiki Shuttle (USA, by Devil’s Bag; ’98), Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet; ’08 &’09), Lord Kanaloa (JPN, by King Kamehameha; ’13) and Maurice (JPN, by Screen Hero; ’15). In 1861, when Japan was about to move from the feudal system into the Meiji Restoration, foreign residents living in Yokohama, predominantly British, introduced the first Western-style horse racing by establishing the Yokohama Race Club to Japan. Western style horse racing was held in foreign enclaves, and hence, unfortunately, very little is known or recorded about initial era in Japan’s modern horse racing history. At about the same time that the name of the Japanese central city was changed from Edo to Tokyo, Western-style horse racing began to be found in the major metropolitan cities across the country. In 1906, the government embarked on a policy which tacitly allowed to bet. This led to the introduction of modern horse racing featuring sales of betting tickets in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and other metropolitan cities, from which most racing operations benefited. However, this profitable system was short lived; two years later, the government prohibited betting and instituted a system of paying direct subsidies for prize money and other horse racing expenses. During this subsequent period of government-subsidized horse racing, prominent legislators, businessmen, as well as breeders, began active efforts to introduce a horse racing law. Eventually the government began to take proactive position to promote horse racing in order to expand breeding in Japan and to improve quality of the Japanese horses. In 1923, horse racing legislation, so greatly desired by the horse racing industry, was enacted and led to the formation of 11 racing clubs.

Exclusive Topics for Horse Racing in Japan – Summer Edition – July 2021 The Japan Racing Association JRA-organized races and racegoers have fortunately been able to avoid the worst effects of the COVID-19 pandemic this year. Whereas races had to be held in front of empty stands from mid- January, venues gradually began to reopen their doors with capacity limitations as early as March, Nakayama Racecourse being the last to do so in April. With the exception of the February Stakes, the spring G1 series was able to be held with the attendance and support of fans. The World All-Star Jockeys, however, which is held annually in Sapporo in late August, had to be canceled for the second year in a row. Major spring events around the world resumed this year. At the Dubai World Cup day meeting in late March, Japanese contenders registered runner-up efforts in four G1 races on the card. The following month, they swept the top four places in Hong Kong’s Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1, 2,000m), where Loves Only You (JPN, M5, by Deep Impact) took home first prize. As contenders expected to compete abroad this autumn gradually coming to light, six home-bred nominees for this year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1, 2,400m) on October 3 were announced in May. The first potential Arc runner to be announced was Deep Bond (JPN, C4, by Kizuna), who was 10th, 5th and 4th in last year’s Triple Crown races, each time behind champion Contrail (JPN, C4, by Deep Impact) who made a clean sweep.
