The Wilson Substation near Nicollet Avenue and I-494 is a local example of a substation surrounded by an approximately 12-foot-tall wall. Xcel Energy calls for the same approach to the two substations in its proposed Hiawatha Project. Community concerns about the substations relate to the loss of existing and potential public greenspaces as well as aesthetics, noise, and electric and magnetic fields.

Xcel needs approval for the route of the line and the substation locations from the state Public Utilities Commission (PUC). In May, the PUC accepted Xcel’s High Voltage Lines application, starting a year-long approval process.
