NADAL SEEKS 11th MONTE-CARLO TITLE AGAINST RESURGENT NISHIKORI

• World No. 1 and top seed of will attempt to win a staggering 11th Rolex Monte- Carlo Masters championship on Sunday when he meets familiar foe of Japan in the title match, while the Japanese player hopes to win the first ATP Masters 1000 title of his career. Nadal leads the -to-head 9-2, and has a 3-0 advantage on clay. Nishikori, however, won their most recent meeting, in the bronze-medal match at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Moreover, Nishikori had Nadal on the ropes in their only previous ATP Masters 1000 final, where he led Nadal by a set on the clay courts of before retiring in the third set.

• Nadal has hit a career-best 34 consecutive sets won on clay following his straight-set semi-final defeat of World No. 5 . The current top-ranked player has dropped only 16 games in four matches this week, including two Top 10 victories over Dimitrov and World No. 7 . This is the sixth time Nadal has not dropped a set en route to the Monte-Carlo final, and he has won this title four times without dropping a set (2008-10 and 2012). Nadal has improved his lifetime clay-court win-loss record to 395-35 (.919), and is 67-4 at Monte-Carlo, where he now aims for his 11th title in 12 championship match appearances (his only prior final-round loss was to in 2013). The Spaniard is currently tied with Djokovic for the most ATP Masters 1000 titles, with 30 apiece, and is one match-win away from claiming the lead outright with a 31st trophy. Additionally, Nadal must win the title to retain the World No. 1 ranking and prevent from reclaiming the top spot on Monday.

• After an injury absence which extended from August 2017 into January of this year, Nishikori has made his first ATP World Tour singles final since his return, and his first final overall since Buenos Aires in February 2017. The top-ranked Japanese player is into the fourth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final of his career, after runner-up finishes at Madrid in 2014 (l. to Nadal) and Miami and Toronto in 2016 (l. both to Djokovic). Nishikori is trying to become the fourth straight first-time ATP Masters 1000 champion, and the first unseeded ATP Masters 1000 champion since won at Paris-Bercy in 2007. Nishikori is also bidding to become the first player to win an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title and an ATP Challenger Tour title in the same season, after prevailing at the Challenger event in Dallas, TX, USA in February. If Nishikori wins, he would also become the second player to win on both the ATP World Tour and ATP Challenger Tour this year, after Pablo Andujar went back-to-back at Alicante, Spain, and Marrakech earlier this month.

• The two teams leading the 2018 ATP Doubles Race to London will square off in the Rolex Monte- Carlo Masters doubles final, as champions Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic take on victors Bob and . Marach and Pavic kicked off the season with a 17-match winning streak, including their first men’s doubles title in Melbourne, and find themselves as the top point-getters of the year so far. Close behind in the Race are the Bryan twins, who picked up the 37th ATP Masters 1000 event of their storied career in Miami last month.

NADAL CONTINUES CLAY CRUSADE IN MONTE-CARLO SEMI-FINALS

• Rafael Nadal has set ATP World Tour records by winning 92% of his matches on clay, 53 clay- court championships, and 10 titles each at three clay-court events. From 2005 through 2007, he enjoyed an 81-0 run on the surface. The World No. 1 can add another line to his clay-court resume on Saturday against No. 4 seed Grigor Dimitrov in the Monte-Carlo semi-finals. Nadal has won 32 straight sets on clay, equaling his personal-best run that ended in the 2011 Monte-Carlo semi-finals.

• Nadal has lost 11 games in three matches this week, highlighted by a 6-0, 6-2 win over World No. 7 Dominic Thiem. That tied the fewest games allowed by Nadal in 237 matches against Top 10 opponents. The Spaniard also lost two games against then-No. 4 and then-No. 5 Tomas Berdych in 2013. Dimitrov, the World No. 5, is 7-1 in his last eight meetings with Top 10 players. But the Bulgarian is 1-10 lifetime against Nadal and 1-9 against players ranked No. 1.

• In the other semi-final, No. 3 seed faces unseeded Kei Nishikori. Both men have earned three wins in three sets en route to the semi-finals. Nishikori is seeking his first final since February 2017 at Buenos Aires and his first title since February 2016 at Memphis. Zverev celebrated his 21st birthday on Thursday by beating in two hours and 39 minutes. The World No. 4 is 1-0 against Nishikori and 3-0 in ATP Masters 1000 semi-finals.

TOP 6 SEEDS IN MONTE-CARLO QUARTERS FOR 1ST TIME SINCE 2008

• The Top 6 seeds and seven former ATP Masters 1000 finalists will play in the Monte-Carlo quarter- finals on Friday. Ten-time champion Rafael Nadal is into his 14th straight Monte-Carlo quarter-final and the only player to reach this round in both 2008 and 2018. He meets No. 5 seed Dominic Thiem, who beat him in the 2017 Rome quarter-finals. Nadal has won 11 straight matches and 30 straight sets on clay since then, including a victory over Thiem in the Roland Garros semi-finals.

• The top seed is 5-2 against Thiem with all seven meetings on clay. Thiem is trying to become the 10th player overall and first on clay to defeat Nadal and Novak Djokovic at the same tournament. If that happens, Nadal will relinquish the No. 1 ranking back to Roger Federer on Monday. Nadal and John McEnroe are currently tied for sixth all-time with 170 total weeks atop the ATP Rankings.

• Awaiting the winner of Nadal vs. Thiem will be either No. 4 seed Grigor Dimitrov or No. 6 seed . Born less than six months apart, Dimitrov and Goffin have crossed paths at all three levels of pro (ATP, Challenger, Futures). They met in the biggest final of both men’s careers last November at the Nitto ATP Finals, where Dimitrov prevailed after two hours and 30 minutes.

• It was a Dimitrov in February that ricocheted off Goffin’s frame and into his left eye, forcing the Belgian to retire from the Rotterdam semi-finals. That accident bonded Dimitrov and Goffin, who are through to the Monte-Carlo doubles quarter-finals in their first tournament as a team. Goffin is the only player remaining in the singles draw who has yet to reach an ATP Masters 1000 final.

• On the bottom half of the draw, No. 2 seed Marin Cilic meets Kei Nishikori in a rematch of the 2014 US Open final and No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev celebrates his 21st birthday against Richard Gasquet. Zverev saved three match points to defeat Gasquet en route to his second ATP Masters 1000 title at Montreal last August. On Thursday, Gasquet became the first Frenchman in ATP World Tour history to reach 500 wins. His first win came as a 15-year-old at 2002 Monte-Carlo, and he remains the youngest player to earn a victory since Tommy Ho, 15, at 1988 Rye Brook.

TOP SIX SEEDS, LED BY NADAL, CILIC, A. ZVEREV, DIMITROV IN 3rd RD

• The top six seeds are in the third round at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Thursday with World No. 1 and 10-time Monte-Carlo champion Rafael Nadal, No. 2 seed Marin Cilic, No. 3 Alexander Zverev, No. 4 Grigor Dimitrov, No. 5 Dominic Thiem and No. 6 David Goffin leading the way. In addition, No. 9 seed/two-time winner Novak Djokovic is also among the last 16, which is represented by 12 countries..

• In the opening match, Jan-Lennard Struff takes on No. 3 Zverev, who has won both previous ATP World Tour meetings along with a Challenger match. Struff is attempting to reach his first career ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final and earn his second Top 10 victory (1-7). His lone Top 10 win came over No. 3 Wawrinka at 2016 Paris-Bercy. Zverev is one of a tournament-high four Germans left and he has won six in a row vs. countrymen since losing to F. Mayer in the 2016 Halle final. Last season the 20-year-old Hamburg native (turns 21 on Friday) reached the quarter-finals or better in four ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, winning titles in Rome and Montreal.

• In the next match on, Djokovic brings a 5-1 head-to-head record (2-1 on clay) against No. 5 Thiem, who won the last meeting in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last year. Djokovic, who won titles here in 2013 and 2015, is trying to reach the quarter-finals in Monte-Carlo for the ninth time in 12 years. This is the first time he’s playing a Top 10 opponent while ranked outside the Top 10 since the final at 2007 ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells where he was No. 13 (l. to No. 2 Nadal). Thiem comes in with a 9-1 record on clay this season and he’s trying to reach his first QF here.

• In the third match on, Nadal meets Russian No. 2 Karen Khachanov, who lost both previous meetings last season at Wimbledon and Beijing. Nadal, who is playing his first tournament since the Australian Open QF in January, improved his Monte-Carlo record to 64-4 on Wednesday with a 61 63 win over Bedene. The Spaniard had been sidelined with a hip injury before returning April 6-8 to help Spain to a 3-2 Davis Cup win over Germany. Nadal has won 14 consecutive matches vs. Russians since falling to Nikolay Davydenko in the SFs at 2011 Doha. Nadal has reached the Monte-Carlo QFs or better 13 years in a row since losing in the 3R in his 2003 debut (l. to Coria).

• In the final match, No. 14 seed and Cilic meet for the fourth time (Cilic leads 2-1). Their last meeting came in the 2017 Istanbul final with Cilic winning 76 63. That was also their first clay court match. Both players are looking to continue their Monte-Carlo quarter-final streaks. The Croat has reached the QFs in his last two appearances (2015, 2017) while Raonic has advanced to the QFs in his last three visits (2014-16). Raonic is 2-14 lifetime on clay against Top 10 foes with both wins coming in Spain (2016 Madrid 3R, d. No. 7 Tsonga;2012 Barcelona QF, d. No. 4 Murray).

• On Court Des Princes, No. 11 brings a 2-1 head-to-head record against Goffin, who reached the semi-finals here last year. In the next match on, Dimitrov looks for his second win against (2017 Madrid). Both players are trying to reach their third Monte-Carlo quarter-final. Next on is and Richard Gasquet, who won the only previous meeting in 2016 Shenzhen. With a victory Gasquet will become the first Frenchman in the Open Era with 500 career singles wins. In the last match on, qualifier and Kei Nishikori meet for the fifth time (tied 2-2), the first on clay. The winner will reach his first QF here.

NADAL, CILIC, DJOKOVIC HIGHLIGHT DAY FOUR; VERDASCO EYES 500

• The remaining 11 second round matches on Wednesday at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters are headlined by World No. 1 and 10-time Monte-Carlo champion Rafael Nadal, No. 2 seed Marin Cilic, and No. 9/two- time winner Novak Djokovic on Court Rainier III. Fernando Verdasco also attempts to win his 500th career singles match as he takes on Cilic in the last match of the day.

• In the opening match, Daniil Medvedev takes on former World No. 4 Kei Nishikori for the first time. The 22-year-old Russian captured his maiden ATP World Tour title in Sydney in the second week of the season. Nishikori, who is playing in Monte-Carlo for the first time since 2012, is trying to regain his old form from 2014-16 when he finished in the Top 8 three straight years.

• In the next match on, Djokovic looks for his second win in as many meetings against on the rise Croat Borna Coric. who is off to a 9-2 start this season in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. The Serb won the previous meeting 62 64 in the 2R at 2016 ATP Masters 1000 Madrid. Djokovic is 31-9 lifetime in Monte-Carlo, winning titles in 2013 and 2015. Overall Coric is 15-6 this season and last year he didn’t win his 15h match until the week of August 7 in Montreal. He has advanced to the semi-finals in Indian Wells and quarter-finals in Miami in the first two ATP Masters 1000 events.

• In the third match on, Nadal takes on Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia for the second time in three years in Monte-Carlo. Two years ago he beat Bedene 63 63 in this round. Nadal is playing his first tournament since the Australian Open in January. The Spaniard had been sidelined with a hip injury before returning April 6-8 to help Spain to a 3-2 Davis Cup win over Germany. This is the 170th week he’s ranked No. 1, tying John McEnroe for sixth-most in the history of the ATP Rankings. He must defend his Monte-Carlo crown to remain No. 1 or Roger Federer will take over on April 23. Bedene is off to a 9-2 mark on clay this season, highlighted by a runner-up in Buenos Aires (l. to Thiem) in February. He is looking for his first career Top 10 win (0-16).

• In the final match on, Verdasco meets Cilic, who holds a 7-5 career head-to-head advantage, winning the last two meetings in 2016. The Spaniard won the only previous clay court meeting on home soil at 2015 ATP Masters 1000 Madrid. Verdasco comes in with 499 career wins and he’s trying to become the sixth Spaniard in the Open Era to join the 500 Wins Club. Cilic, who is a two- time Monte-Carlo quarter-finalist (2015, 2017), is ranked a career-high No. 3.

• On Court Des Princes, young Russian Karen Khachanov opens against French wild card Gilles Simon and this is their third meeting (tied 1-1), first on clay. In the next match on, No. 13 seed looks for his 300th win (299) against German Jan-Lennard Struff. Fognini won the only previous meeting at 2014 Munich (SF). In third match on, Richard Gasquet is two wins away from the 500 Club as he plays No. 10 seed for the second time. The Frenchman won the previous meeting in the 2016 Antwerp final. In the last match on, No. 14 seed Milos Raonic brings a 2-0 head-to-head record against Italian qualifier Marco Cecchinato.

TWO-TIME CHAMP DJOKOVIC IN ACTION ON MONDAY IN MONTE-CARLO

• 2013 and 2015 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters champion Novak Djokovic leads five seeded players into first-round action on Monday. The former World No. 1 from Serbia is seeded 9th this year, which means he is the highest-seeded player who will contest a first-round match this week (the Top 8 seeds have first-round byes).

• Djokovic heads into the first clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event of the season still searching for his first ATP Masters 1000 match win of 2018. The Serb dropped his openers at Indian Wells (lost to Daniel in the second round, after a first-round bye) and Miami (lost to Paire in the second round, after a first-round bye). In Monte-Carlo, he will face his compatriot Dusan Lajovic, who qualified for the main draw without dropping a set. Djokovic is currently tied with Monte-Carlo No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal for the most ATP Masters 1000 championships – both of them have claimed 30 titles.

• Two more seeds who have reached the Monte-Carlo final during their careers will join Djokovic on Court Rainier III. First, No. 15 seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain will take on American Jared Donaldson. Ramos-Vinolas charged to his first ATP Masters 1000 final here last year, including a win over then-No. 1-ranked Andy Murray, before falling to Nadal. Also, Czech No. 12 seed Tomas Berdych, the 2015 Monte-Carlo runner-up, will meet former Top 5 player Kei Nishikori of Japan. Nishikori has a 4-1 lead in their head-to-head record, but Berdych’s lone win came here in 2012.

• The other seeded players in action on Monday are No. 11 Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain, who will play Germany’s , and No. 14 Milos Raonic of Canada, who will meet Lucas Catarina, the 21-year-old wild card from Monaco making his ATP World Tour main draw debut. Also, a #NextGenATP showdown between two 19-year-olds will take place on Court Rainier III when Canadian goes up against Greek qualifier Stefanos Tsitsipas. Shapovalov turned 19 yesterday, on the first day of main-draw play at Monte-Carlo.
