READINGS AT THE EUCHARIST
Dear friends and colleagues,
This letter comes with my prayers for us all as we enter the holy season of Lent. I hope that it will be a time of reflection, of renewal and of profound preparation for the joyful festival of Easter.
Bishop Christopher has asked me to help with diocesan preparations for the enactment of the resolution by which the United Kingdom will leave the European Union, and this is the reason for me writing to you today.
The United Kingdom is set to leave the European Union at 11pm on Friday March 29th. As yet, significant votes still have to take place in Parliament, but whatever the outcome of these votes I would like to share with you the request from our archbishop and bishop, that as God’s people in Greater Lincolnshire we should commit ourselves to prayer at this time, and to being good neighbours to everyone.
It is likely that the national church will produce some easily adaptable resources that might assist us in what I know is already a considerable pastoral challenge. As soon as these resources become available, I will send you the necessary links and details.
In essence, the hope is that church buildings might be open for prayer and that the communities that they serve might be invited to gather to pray together and, where possible, to offer hospitality such as a cup of tea and a chance to talk. It is felt that many different feelings are likely to be unlocked towards the end of March, and that one of the things that we can do as Christians is to recognise our neighbours’ different needs – and our own – and take very simple steps to meet them. We are planning an opportunity to pray together as a diocese at St Botolph’s Church in Boston at 6.00pm on Saturday 30th March.
This letter is not seeking to overburden those who I know are already busy and committed in so many different ways. Rather, it is to try to say ‘here we are, as God’s people, all of us, together, trying to be true to him and to those whom he loves and has made in his image’. My sense is that whatever our personal views of the politics relating to Brexit, we can find common ground in the pastoral issues that are emerging.
3
It is likely that this prayer will be being used nationally and I offer it to you now, as a first step in making other resources and information available to you:
God of hope, in these times of change and uncertainty, unite our nation and guide our leaders with your wisdom. Give us courage to overcome our fears, and help us to build a future in which all may prosper and share: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
With best wishes,
The Right Reverend Dr Nicholas Chamberlain Bishop of Grantham
In addition, a couple of items on the 'News' pages of the diocesan website might be of interest to you: In May of this year there will be a special service in Lincoln Cathedral. A news story on this may be found at https://www.lincoln.anglican.org/news/together-in-ministry-please- come-and-join-us-at-a-special-service
In late August there is to be a major international conference in our diocese. Focusing on climate change, the conference will be hosted by our diocese and the University of Lincoln, and more details may be found at https://www.lincoln.anglican.org/news/tackling-climate-change- together-at-both-a-local-and-a-global-level
In case this is also of interest, churches have an opportunity to take part in something called the 'Big Church Survey'. Once the survey for a church has been filled in, a locally appointed survey 'Champion' will be able to download a short report containing helpful information. The survey is available at https://www.bigchurchsurvey.org/

Lent and Easter
On our short stay on the West Coast of Ireland we have on several occasions been reminded of St Brendon the Navigator, (the Celtic Saint who is reputed to have been the first to have travelled to the New World with a small band of brothers) statues looking out to sea or Churches dedicated to his memory. The importance of migration is a vital part of the Irish story, looking westward across what must have been seen limitless ocean and at the same time the importance of home are all mixed together in the longing for both.
The connection with a forced movement away from home and hearth to the necessity of a return is seen in the many visitors from America and in such well known local attractions as the Obama Services on the motorway to County Kerry.
For Jesus the need for a home base in Galilee, Capernimum, was central yet the need to reach out to Jerusalem, even though it meant at the least uncertainty but more likely Death.
In our journey through Lent and Easter these two themes of the familiar and the longing are at work in the passion story and in our own stories. The crux for Jesus is seen in the Garden of Gethsemanie in which he has just known the security of the Passover Meal he would have shared every year with those close to him and the now he is looking towards the frightening future. No wonder the sweat in making that decision seemed to have the appearance of his life blood falling to the ground.
Jesus makes the decision to set out into the unknown rather than to retreat into the familiar, may God give us the grace to do the same.
Yours Fr P

COME - EVERYTHING IS READY
The 2019 World Day of Prayer service was held in St James Church, Spilsby on 1st March, and had been prepared by Christian women of Slovenia. The theme "Come, Everything is Ready", an invitation for all to come to God's table.
The service leader, Jane Parker, welcomed everyone to St James, and led the Reflection based around the artwork of Rezka Arnus which formed the front cover of the service booklet. Readers were Rev Joan Thornett and Mary Flynn, and the voices of Slovenian Women were Ann Keen, Bunty Martin, Mary Mackinder, Elaine Needham and Jane Wright. Margaret Cook provided the musical accompaniment, and a faith meal was enjoyed at the conclusion of the service. Thank you to all who helped on the day.

MEDITATION
I am looking at a stream. Water is flowing over the weir. I can hear it splashing and dripping. I can see the stones glistening as the sun’s reflection dances on the flowing water bouncing over them. There are trees around me, they are in full leaf. Birds are singing and insects are buzzing as they busy themselves around the trees. There is a slight warm breeze wafting air over my face and arms. I have known this place for many years but I have not been there for an age. I want to run across the weir again as I did when a child but I can’t. I cannot move; I am alone but know that I can feel God’s presence. I thank him and extol His awesome science! S.H.

As I write this we are still in the season of Lent but I know that soon we will all be celebrating Easter. The season when we all see new growth in the garden; I know some of it has come early this year with the good weather we have had but it is good to see shoots forming on bushes and hedge rows.
It reminds us that things that appear to have no life can be brought to new life; there is hope. Things in our own lives that may seem bleak can suddenly change and a shaft of light can appear on an otherwise dark horizon. The light of Christ is able to penetrate even the darkest situation. No matter what we may be experiencing in our lives at this time, we are never truly on our own.
The disciples all thought it was all over and became scared and frightened on Good Friday, yet on Easter morning the most glorious thing happened, Jesus physically showed us all that there is a new life, a resurrection life.
May you experience something of his resurrection power in your life this Easter as you turn to him. Easter Blessings Teresa

FRAN’S BIT (Or meandering thoughts from a tired Team Vicar!)
What a difference a day makes. I am looking out of a window at brilliant sunshine, with hyacinths in full bloom in tubs on the patio, and a black cat curled up asleep in the sunshine. And the trees are still, very still. Yesterday, and for several days before that, the trees were anything but still – with Storm Gareth closely followed by high winds and heavy rain which, though severe, did not quite reach the dizzy heights of being named Storm Hannah. (Don’t worry, Hannah will come at some point!) It is a little day of calm, an oasis, which welcomes me today. Would that every day were like that! But it cannot be. Taking time out to be with God means that other things don’t get done – there are minutes to write, applications to make, sermons and services to prepare. And yet, taking time out to be with God is so essential to keeping everything in perspective. It is essentially a matter of priorities. And, for a Christian, God has quite a claim to be at the top of the priorities list. So, I am sitting, staring out of the window into the sunshine and giving thanks for the life I have with God. In a moment, I will go and grab another coffee and get on with the ‘To Do’ list which longer every time I look at it. But not yet. The words of a song are running round in my head, and they suit the mood as we head towards Easter: To be in your presence, to sit at your feet, Where your love surrounds me and makes me complete This is my desire, O Lord, this is my desire.
To rest in your presence, not rushing away To cherish each moment, here I would stay This is my desire, O Lord, this is my desire.
May we all have a restful and joyous Easter. Fran

MODERN SLAVERY AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Could you… DONATE
The Salvation Army’s mission leads it directly to the front line against human trafficking. Last year alone it supported 3345 victims of modern slavery and human trafficking. Victims have come from 86 different countries between July 2017 and June 2018. 1856 people were referred to the Salvation Army’s specialist support for victims of modern slavery. Not all of these were trafficked from abroad, but are vulnerable British people.
The Salvation Army says: “There are no statistics to measure love. You can’t put a price on compassion or friendship or gentleness. Yet it is these things that bring hope back into the lives of people who have lost all hope.”
Every one pound donated to the Salvation Army will see a full 91 pence go to the people in need, with only 9p going on costs.
To contact the Salvation Army telephone 020 7367 4800. Website: www.salvationarmy.org.uk
Could you… PRAY
Lord of the lost, we pray today for all those who are victims of human trafficking: people lured from their homes and families; people deceived while trying to find a better life; people who are desperate to trust anyone. Help us to be more vigilant and watchful; to be aware of those who may need our help, and those who do not know where help may lie.
Lord of changed hearts, we pray today for those involved in trafficking and human slavery. We pray that in their heart of hearts they know that what they do is evil. We pray that they will give up the lures of money, greed, control and repent the harm they have done and the suffering they have caused.
Lord of creation, we thank you for all who are working to combat modern slavery: for governments and agencies, for Church and other faith leaders, for charities and individuals. Help us to be part of love’s movement, to work for a world where human beings are valued, free to come and go, where no one is enslaved, no one used against their will for another’s pleasure or need. Amen. Prayer taken from “We See You” prayer resource www.theclewerinitiative.org 13

LUNCHEONS IN LENT – LITTLE STEEPING
I never know what to give up for lent or how to find that self- discipline that prepares us for Easter. This year I thought that time is one of my main issues. I decided to give up Wednesdays for six weeks and cook lunches.
Our villages often isolate people who have to rely on others. Coming together over the dinner table is an ideal way to enjoy good company and relax. Social interaction is necessary for us all. So far, we have enjoyed the first of these and look forward to the others.
Firsby Group Charitable Trust very kindly donated funds towards the cost. There are forms available for applications to this Trust. Those applying must live within the Trusts boundaries and need the money for projects that will be beneficial to the community. Perhaps I shouldn’t enjoy Lent but I shall. Giving up time means I can still eat chocolate! S.H.

ST ANDREW’S, LITTLE STEEPING
St Andrews recently bought a heart start machine for use in the village. It is situated on the wall of Graham Clowsley’s garage. Hopefully, there will never arise the need to utilise it but just in case: Colin and Basil arranged for someone to come and demonstrate how it works and how to use it.
There were 24 people eager to resuscitate the practice dummies and discover how easy it is to use the modern de-fibs that are fast becoming available for use in our communities. A big thank you to everyone who became involved with and contributed to this project. Special thanks go to Graham for allowing it to be sited in a necessarily prominent position and to Colin for his hard work chasing the funding for it.
David Round, Peggy Johnson and Kathleen Round each working hard to do their best for the dummy.

FAMILY SERVICE
Reverend Joan Thornett opened the Family service in March by shouting TIMBERrrrr and Margaret played the tune to the Teddy Bears' picnic as the introit. Many of the congregation could be heard singing the words and this song brought back many memories. A display of wooden objects had been placed on the altar and the children were given the task of drawing teddy bears, leaves and trees.
During the service the children came to the front and Reverend Joan sat down and told a story and started by saying “Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin” and proceeded to tell the story of Big Tree, Little Tree, the story of a little boy who watched the progress of an acorn growing into a sapling as he didn't understand how God helped trees to grow and the importance of patience. Reverend Joan's message was “Let God work with us and help things grow”
Jane and Margaret talked about the uses of wood and asked the children to identify four different twigs from holly, beech, oak and yew trees. They then looked at the East window and the picture of Jesus hanging on a wooden cross and the importance of Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The service ended with the hymn ‘You shall go out with joy’ when “the trees of the field shall clap their hands”.
The next Family service will be on April 7th at 10.00 when the title will be ‘HOW MUCH?’ Everyone will be made very welcome.
St James’ coffee mornings will be starting again in Church on May 4th and providing we have enough helpers we hope to go on until October. A rota will be placed at the back of the Church so please sign up if you are able to help. Cakes do not have to be home made and if you have ideas to provide something different then please do. The cafe will be 18 open from 10.00 – 12.00 and the price will be £2.00 for tea/coffee and cake. What a bargain! There will also be a variety of different stalls during the Summer so call in and see what there is. A warm welcome awaits you.
Spilsby Annual Parochial Church Meeting will be held on Tuesday 23rd April, 7pm in Spilsby Vicarage. All are welcome to attend – we would love to see ‘old’ faces and ‘new’! We are looking for PCC members but you will not be cajoled into joining the PCC unless you want to. Come along and find out what it’s all about or ask Fr Peter or the churchwardens for more information beforehand. Your support would be very much appreciated. Electoral Roll – this is being renewed so please make sure you have completed a new application form (available at the back of church).

ERESBY NEWS
Congratulations to Iwona Blanchet who used to be the activities coordinator at the Hall. She is now a PCSO (Police constable support officer) and will be based in Spilsby for 12 weeks. She started her training in November 2018 and the photograph was taken in January 2019. Well done Iwona. We wish you every success in your future career. A new activities coordinator has not yet been appointed.
Polly and Pauline were very busy with serving coffee and selling raffle and tombola tickets at the Volunteers' coffee morning held on February 26th in the conservatory at the Hall. It was good to see some new faces and everyone enjoyed the delicious cakes. The grand total of £120 was raised for the amenities fund. Thank you Polly and Pauline for all your hard work and to everyone who supported them.
The funerals of two residents, Pam Ford and Joan Tong, took place in St James Church at the beginning of March. Both had been faithful members of the Church and enjoyed the services taken by Father Peter when he visited the Hall. They will be missed.

More Newhome thoughts on Computers
Well would you believe it, the government have done something useful. There is a good website that claims to be working with the government to promote online safety. You can find it at www.getsafeonline.org The site covers everything you could possibly ever want to know on the subject. This means it might be a bit overwhelming, but better that, than not covering what you are worried about. Their opening statement is; “Get Safe Online is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing the best advice on internet safety to the UK public and small businesses. We are supported financially both by the government and by selected private sector partners, as well as sharing resources and best practice advice.”
The section under 'Protecting Your Computer' is full of useful information including the section on passwords. They suggest you can use a phrase and take letters from that. I have done this in the past with postal addresses which you can include or exclude some lines in. Then you take letters as they suggest. I must say it is not possible to have different passwords for every site and remember them all. Everyone I deal with has a little black book. Personally I have a spreadsheet that I encrypt and backup. What ever you do try and create a method for making passwords. Humans are good at method but very bad at remembering silly strings of characters. Over the years I have shown many people a method and within 2 minutes of seeing it they can recall an 11 character password that I have just made up in front of them.
There is of course an enormous amount more material in this site and I would advise you all to look at it and consider all of your computers, not just the windows systems. There are lots of new devices that connect you and your house to the internet. All of these are only as good as the weakest piece of software. So updating the 'fridge' is real if it is connected to the net. That also goes for your security cameras. 'Which' had a nice piece on hacking home tech. Once you are into one device, you are into the network and most devices trust others on the network; or life is hard for you; so the hacker is into all your devices. Hacking software by the way will not be run on the computers processor; it is too slow; it is run on the graphics card. These can do billions of mathematical calculations a second. Much faster and just what a good criminal wants to break your password while they can be anywhere in the world. Any where there is electricity and a link to the internet, or a satellite.

“Are you sitting comfortable? Then I will begin.” Last year I wrote my first children’s book ‘Barty and Darcy.’ It was published as an e- book in January of this year. Reviewers from the likes of Amazon, Apple Books, NetGalley and Goodreads have described the book as “cute’ – ‘A lovely story.’ – ‘A book which I read with excitement.’ (this was from a mother reading it to her 3years old daughter.) These reviews which can be substantiated by the above organisations, are from customers all over the world, especially the UK and the USA. Many of the reviewers are teachers and librarians who have recommended it highly for reading.
Aimed at the age range 6 to 10 years old, it is being read to children much younger, some as low as 3 years old. It is also being read by adults. The story is “cute” but it also has a meaning. The cost is only £1.99 and can be read on an iPad, a Laptop, a Tablet, or an iPhone. Visit, Kindle, Books, Goodreads or Troubador Publishing and buy at the low price. Let the young ones read it or read it to them. Believe me, they will love it! Thanks for reading this. Mo Bird – email [email protected] you can contact me on Facebook at Maurice Bird, (Lincoln, Lincolnshire.)
